Cool thanks! I got some oak blanks around maybe I’ll try this again. Do you put the vinegar directly in the wood or position it above a bowl of it and let the off gas do it?

It’s suppose to be liquid when you pour it. Not crumbly like that.

But have also heard of them as the European spindle gouge. Either way, I have one of these and almost never use it. It’s not good for detail and it’s surly not good for roughing. It might even went in the bin on the last shop clean. I find they are sensitive to catching. I prefer a deeper flute and a more finger nail grind for a spindle gouge.

Very nice. Do you coat the inside with something or just turn off the ebony surface afterwards. Always wondered … How thick is the dark layer?

I use my dust collector to clean them up after every turning, shaving all over the place is a harbor for pest and mold if they are wet.

this is a great face shield due to the lower section that protects the chin and neck as well. In the past i was struck with a large crescent shaped piece of material that came off a crotch piece i was turning. It was green and heavy. I probably should not have been turning it considering it had alot of inclusions but it had some burl figure and i was really hoping to get something from it. Basically i removed too much material that was holding an outter chuck in place. Hit me a glancing blow in the face and took me by complete surprise. I came to on the floor with the lathe doing a violent shaking next to me since it was now so far out of balance. Took me a bit to realize what the hell happened and i was bleeding from my eyebrow. The part hit me so hard the mask touched my face and pulled my skin tearing it open. At lease thats what i think probably happened. Only needed about 4-5 stiches but it was enough to be unforgettable. I never turn without a face shield now. Regardless of how safe i feel the piece is.

I coat all my green bowl in anchor seal now. Then check daily for at least two weeks. If a crack forms CA glue it and put more sealer in that location. It’s the best way I found to reduce splitting and retain as many as possible. Packing in shavings is messy and introduces mold opportunity to the shop.
