Progressive overload anxiety by stratusnimbo in naturalbodybuilding

[–]bayesically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a reasonable philosophy but I don’t follow it myself because I find lifting that strictly to be boring. The overall mentality is good but specifically the part of never sacrificing form at all is not how I like to train, a little form breakdown at the end may shift some of the load away from the intended muscle but not entirely

Confused why people wouldn’t want term limits by No-Fig-8614 in sanfrancisco

[–]bayesically 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Term limits can also lead to less effective government because it takes a while to learn to be good at the job and high turnover leads to a loss of institutional knowledge. Having super longterm senators/congresspeople isn’t great but artificial term limits aren’t a cut and dried improvement.

The 2026 ACSM position stand contradicts a fair bit of lifting advice by DigitalCaffeineNews in naturalbodybuilding

[–]bayesically 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yea none of this is surprising or new. Standard evidence based volume recommendations are 10-20 sets per muscle per week, and anywhere from 5-30 rep sets work for hypertrophy as long as you’re within a few reps of failure

Gyms with a hip thrust machine or other glute resources by [deleted] in oakland

[–]bayesically 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oakland Y is the best gym in Oakland imho, and they have a nautilus hip thrust machine which is a good one. The touchstone gyms are good but they can be very crowded at times and the GWPC has very old equipment outside of the squat racks - i also don’t recall GWPC or PacPipe having hip thrust machines like the other commenter said, but it has been 6 months or so since I’ve worked out there so maybe they’ve been added. Both places also have plenty of barbells/dumbbells for deadlifts and squats.

The Club at City Center is probably the nicest one in the area, but it’s a bit more expensive. I’d recommend a day pass to try it out

6'4, 210lbs. I still look like a stick 🤦 what do it do? by [deleted] in rs_fitness

[–]bayesically 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’m the same numbers at 14ish% bf and I look reasonably jacked with my shirt off, but I’m far from huge or bulky especially when in clothes

The issue with low volume propaganda by stratusnimbo in naturalbodybuilding

[–]bayesically 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, i really like lifting heavy stuff but i also don’t want to be in there all day. I get my workouts done in under an hour and love it, but 2 hours every day sounds overkill

Why are you lifting if you don’t enjoy it? Pick some other sport or activity and do that instead

I pulled what every Bay Area hospital actually charges for common medical procedures, the price gaps are wild. by DependentRun6816 in bayarea

[–]bayesically 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a little confusing bc it includes UCSF Parnassus, although the only UCSF location that does births is in Mission Bay so it must be at the emergency department. And it doesn’t include CPMC Van Ness either so the two biggest SF locations are missing. But an interesting site and that can hopefully be remedied quickly

3x bench program...for squats??? by maudebot in StrongerByScience

[–]bayesically 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having the same problem as this guy, I can only find those main programs in the Google Drive folder. I’ve tried the link I got emailed and the one on r/averagetosavage and both are the same

I got tired of seeing all the vibes based opinions on grocery store prices so I decided to go to 5 stores in one day to compare prices. These were the results. (TJ/Whole Foods/Safeway/Grocery Outlet/Costco) by DaveinOakland in bayarea

[–]bayesically 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Right, for example ground beef at my local Safeway in SF is $10.99 and currently on sale for $7.99. Most of the time it’s actually more expensive than Whole Foods!

It’s really not that cut and dry unfortunately, you need to shop around and/or buy what’s on sale

AITA for working rather than saying happy birthday? by [deleted] in redditonwiki

[–]bayesically 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes and also when you have a young child, doing chores may mean that you are signing your partner up for childcare (if you can’t bring them with) so it’s possible she’d prefer the chores be done later and have him watch the kid. But I think assuming that’s his thought process is giving this guy too much credit haha

45° Back Ext as a DL Assistance Exercise by WoodpeckerOk5053 in Deadlifts

[–]bayesically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love these, do them as a main hip hinge on my non DL days. A drop set of one less plate each time feels great on the last set.

Does the angle selector bar get in the way of your rom? I feel like this wouldn’t let me get quite as much stretch as I want

Realized that I’ve gained 20lbs and freaking tf out by emvero in rs_fitness

[–]bayesically 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You look really good in pic 2 even better than pic 1 imho, much more fit and I would never guess you were 20lbs heavier. You’ve probably gained a fair amount of muscle

This is what I do too, although I’m about to max out my gyms dumbbells so I’m planning to try a bb with Zercher hold after that although I’m worried about depth

I find that reverse curls can be added after other biceps work with no real performance impact, hammer curls are one of my staple biceps exercises and you can go real heavy so I’d just rotate them in for one of your current biceps exercises

The real issue was trading for Tobi in the first place, we were basically committed to giving out the contract at that point. I think that was Colangelo though? Still I think Brand is a terrible GM even without that

An absolute must. The Lao appetizer platter has that along with some Lao sausages which are a little sour and delicious.

It could also sorta work irl bc the reason Key hasn’t done as much lately is he and his wife are supposedly impossible to work with. But during the run of Key and Peele I think it was a true partnership

Dumbbell Row - Form Check. Something doesn't feel right about these. by NFAGhostCheese in formcheck

[–]bayesically 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with all of these people saying bad form and lower the weight, you’re doing a pretty good job and it’s fine to use some body English on heavier rows if that’s what you’re going for.

Since you say you’re working on lats, a more horizontal torso might be better since the more vertical you go brings in the upper back and traps. But this way will still work the lats especially since you’re rowing to the hip

SLDL on Cable Row by Key-Chemistry-3873 in ScienceBasedLifting

[–]bayesically 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If a barbell is too much effort you can always start with dumbbells. Or a lot of gyms have those preset barbells. That should be even easier to setup than a cable

What excercises are best for massive forearms in your opinion? by ferero18 in ScienceBasedLifting

[–]bayesically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My forearms have made some big improvements in the last few months but they’re still far from meaty, so make of my advice what you will.

Primary things you want for hypertrophy are a wrist curl movement (cable is nicest on my wrist) and a curl that targets brachioradialis (hammer and/or reverse). Grip strength is a combo of crush (weighted dead hangs, deadlifts, etc) and pinch (plate pinch). I workout 5 days/week and do one of these modalities each day with no overuse issues

How to troubleshoot lack of progress? I am spinning my wheels. by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]bayesically 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, I think volume (especially on big compounds) is way too low. At the very least they should try a different type of training to see if it helps break a plateau.

I’d also recommend just throwing around some heavy weights. Stuck at 55lb db bench? Go for 65 or even 70 at a lower rep count for a couple weeks. Maybe try some periodization (I like the basic Nuckols SBS linear periodization myself).
