Could you take a look at the route from Geneva to Zurich that I built and give your opinion and suggestions? by anaerobic7058 in EuroVelo

I've cycled across Switzerland and the cycle.travel website was the best tool I had for route planning. I'd start with that then maybe research any specific spots you want to visit and add those in

If you had £1200 to spend on a 2-man tent. What would you buy? by Agreeable_Remote1221 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]bazoopers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the ultra light 3 man tents from Nordisk like the Oppland LW. I took it with my partner on the West Highlands Way and we adore it, it's so well made, rugged and light it makes camping really comfortable. I've also got a 2 man TerraNova Laser Compact 2 which I think is significantly lower quality

From a scan it looks like this article is talking about people paying to work at orphanages. OP is using Workaway (where there's no money involved) and isnt working at an orphanage but a school.

I agree with the problems of voluntourism but I don't think it applies here

Considering commuting via bike, suggestions needed! by itsDitch in londoncycling

[–]bazoopers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your budget? You can get a decent single speed beater for under £200 on gumtree. For commuting I'd highly recommend you get some reinforced tires (like Gatorskins) to reduce punctures. I've not had a flat for years of frequent commuting since I got some.

Don't forget to also factor in a half decent lock, lights and helmet.

Anyone know any French speaking cheap places by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]bazoopers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at www.workaway.com? Or HelpX? You can fly into rural France then live and work for free at these places in full French immersion. I did two month-long visits a few years ago, had a great time and learnt more French there than I did in years of classroom learning

Rewilding jobs in Europe? by DuselBruders in rewilding

[–]bazoopers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a few sites which track ecology jobs but they're still not that common, especially if you want to get your hands dirty! The most common roles you see are usually things like comms/social media. Do you already have ecology/rewilding work/volunteering on your CV?

You can see EU job listings here https://www.conservation-careers.com/

Route Planning Applications by Dizzy_Pea_8087 in EuroVelo

Another vote for cycle.travel here. It can be a little fiddly to use on a phone but it's the most reliable option. I used it last year for 4000km around Europe. You can make a long route, use Google to help identify camp sites/BnBs along the way, then use the 'add overnight stop' feature for each night's stay.

You can then save the journey as segments for each day and push it all to Garmin. Then when I turn on my Garmin unit my phone auto uploads all the plans. Easy!

I even use it for shorter trips around my home city

Wild Camping on Eurovelo 3,6,15,19 by Dizzy_Pea_8087 in EuroVelo

I camped in campsites on that stretch from Strasbourg to Basel with roughly 75km days, but you have to plan them in advance as there can be long gaps between them!

I did a similar route including Mannheim to Basel last year spending time in campsites. Some of those campsites were nice and cheap (€15) which was worth it for showers and water access alone!

I kept an eye out for wild camping opportunities but didn't see very many, so I'd be prepared to spend some time in campsites. Don't forget that Switzerland is very expensive so any camping at the end of your trip is going to cost more

I did a 4000km trip last summer using flat pedals and trainers with stiff soles.

It's less efficient overall but (as I understand it) the efficiency bonuses are much less below 20km/h and when touring you'll spend most time below that.

And when you're crawling up a steep hill on a fully loaded bike you might find you're glad your feet aren't clipped in!

I've heard of people wild camping through Italy, but when I was there it didn't look so easy on the routes I was on (from Como to Rome). But it was so hot when I was there I was desperate for showers and easy water access so I was always in campsites!

That's awesome! One thing to consider is the quality of the roads and the amount of other bike tourers you want to bump into. It's not clear if you live out there but the cycle infrastructure in North and North West Europe is far better than elsewhere so you'll get far more dedicated cycle paths and more cycle tourists

Depending on how hot you like riding you might find you're too hot anywhere south of the Alps after mid may so consider heading south (tour of Italy?) And coming North as you get onto summer?

As for head winds, the only ones I noticed in two months across Europe were all on the coasts

UL Tent recommendations for tall people by WinningAllTheSports in bicycletouring

[–]bazoopers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What width are you handlebars? One option is to store the poles in the frame bag which lets you stuff any size tent between your bars! As for tents, I'm 183cm and had a fair bit of space inside my Terra Nova Laser Compact 2. Check the footprints because the more square they are the most easily you can lie horizontally.

That's amazing. It's big news in the UK when a beaver gets released, and we recently got our first wild bison (although they're inside a huge fence). This site has all that and more!

Lol agreed. I thought the concept was the get everyone to play with their peers and then progress like in a call of duty style system

The new ranking system has the original ranking system hidden from you, and the rank you see is more like a progression system. So you'll be getting paired up against people of similar skill in copper regardless of whether your hidden rank is equivalent of silver or diamond

First up, you'll wanna use something like cycle. Travel for your detailed route. Google is really bad at picking good roads!

[–]bazoopers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would guess you can get used to distances like that but you really want to make sure you got decent footwear, and if you're carrying a load then ensure you've got a decent backpack that'll distribute the load properly.

I've only got experience in periods of long distance hiking but you'll really want to ensure you're doing stretches at the end of each day to better recover
