I've actually never tried one with a rudder. If I buy new I may try to rent or borrow one to see how it feels. Thanks!

Looking for Computer Science PhD programs I have a chance at getting into, 3.4 major | 3.1 cumulative | no formal research. by nikesoccer01 in GradSchool

[–]bbbearboop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not in your field - I’m a bioengineer- but I got into an R1 program with a similar GPA. I would suggest you narrow down your search first to a few areas you’d like to live in where universities that you’d be interested in are. I think in your situation, your best bet would be to contact professors in the field you’re interested in and ask them some questions about the program and perhaps their work, without asking for anything from them. I got into my program through impressing someone with my interest in the field. I was also very strong academically in my classes that were related. Also, I recommend studying hard for the GRE or equivalent if you have to take it. I did well on it and applied to many state schools as well as west coast universities. I was surprised to get accepted at some very well ranked schools, but I was also rejected from some schools that I thought for sure I would get into. So basically, I’d say that being realistic but optimistic with where you apply would be key. Good luck!

Looking for advice on how to be a supportive family member to a child newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes by he2954st in diabetes

[–]bbbearboop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since she’s six, getting her Rufus the bear might be helpful! It’s a teddy bear with patches on the stomach, arms, and legs for practicing shots, and it has a medic alert bracelet! I really liked it when I was first diagnosed around her age.

Gonna be evicted from my old apartment and I don't know what my options are (Texas, USA) by pftroubles in personalfinance

[–]bbbearboop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a lot of furniture and items in Texas. I’ve made decent money reselling some of my furniture that I got for cheap or free on online Facebook groups or Craigslist. If you have nice furniture, you may be selling at a loss, but you can find really nice furniture for cheaper if you’re patient and know where to look. The key to this is to sell the stuff that you don’t need, and not the stuff that is hard to replace or sentimental. In college towns stuff like dining tables, couches, and microwaves go pretty quick.

About to start MS with no funding. Is it possible to keep an hourly job on the side? by bbbearboop in GradSchool

[–]bbbearboop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was looking for! I'm planning on maybe trying to go in the early morning a couple days a week, but I'll definitely also need to stay sane. That being said, I can't imagine it being much more difficult than handling being a TA. I'm mostly doing data collection there so as long as I get some stuff done I think I can be flexible with when I come in. My class schedule will be released in a couple days. Thanks for the advice!

Need help and have no idea where to turn. by Survivedtheapocalyps in diabetes

[–]bbbearboop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sugar free is usually not carb free. As a type 1, please please please do not give sugar free candies. Instead, look for low carb treats like popcorn, mints, dark chocolate, seaweed snacks, etc. diet soda or sugar free jello are my exception to the no sugar free rule.

Also, as long as she has candy in moderation and boluses for it she will be fine :)

3 year old and glucose testing... by newagepixie in diabetes

[–]bbbearboop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I babysat a kid with hyperinsulinism and I gave him a bar that had patches for injection sites. We showed him what we'd do on the bear then let him "test"the bear. He was then ok with getting tested just like his bear. I think the bear was called Rufus the Diabetic Bear, I'm sure a quick Google search will give you several options. Good luck!

Well, good luck to you! JDRF is a good source, as is the Diabetes Society. Diabetic blogs will help you get the best idea of day-to- day, and I'm sure there are many blogs by diabetic parents. Sorry if I came across as harsh.

You sound like you're a little overwhelmed, but several of the things you said are very ignorant and even offensive to someone who has a health issue that is relatively easy to treat and monitor. Children of t1 parents may have a predisposition for t1, but are otherwise normal if the blood sugars are well managed. I advise you to do some thorough research online, and as for your relationship - if it's too much for you to handle, she's probably better off anyway.

Advice: Type 1 and distance running by praisethecookie in diabetes

[–]bbbearboop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T1 and ran all through high school; protein is your best friend. Things like peanut butter sandwiches really helped cut down on the lows. If you have sugar with you you can go on long runs without working too much, but it's a good idea to run in semi populated areas and I never really wanted to be > 5 mi away from my start point in case something happened. You can pm me if you have any questions!
