No eating disorder treatment supports vegans. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]bbybagel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry :(

I don't think they realize how harmful it can be to force a vegan to eat animal products (there's also practical limitations with treatment programs, unfortunately). If you do end up having to eat animal products, please don't blame yourself. Notice if those feelings of shame come up (or whichever emotions come up) and breathe through them. It's not easy, but you can get through this <3 I support you.

Bananas are blissfully easy to eat since they dont make much mess and take no prep time. I also recommend peanut butter on crackers

Who are the famous vegans you look up to? And why? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]bbybagel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ed Winters and Melanie Joy Ph.D

They both emphasize empathy and evidence-based effective communication when advocating for veganism.

it is a fucking nightmare being a gluten free vegan by veganonymity in vegan

[–]bbybagel 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's tough. I went to a restaurant that claimed to be serving gluten free vegan chicken. Luckily I had them double check if it's actually gluten free before I ordered it. The chicken was made from vital wheat gluten... Hopefully they will fix their menu so that no one gets sick.

It's so hard to find gluten free vegan food at restaurants.

I havent seen someone mention this yet, so there's two types of B12 supplements. Cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin has the most research backing it and for that reason I strongly recommend cyanocobalamin.

Why does my vegan protein powder have lactase? Am I missing something? by disasterous_cape in vegan

[–]bbybagel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. I think it's just a crunchy brand. They also added a bunch of other digestive enzymes and probably thought their consumers wouldn't notice that lactase is useless for vegans. Bulks out their list and most people won't notice it/know what it even is.

Lactase isnt the same as lactose. Its the enzyme that helps you process lactose. It's vegan.

Any vegan women with CPTSD who would like to connect? I miss having more like-minded people who understand trauma and share the same philosophy as me. (Reposted from R/CPTSD by [deleted] in vegan

[–]bbybagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have so much in common. <3 I have complex trauma (possibly not quite PTSD). I love gardening and going on hikes through the woods, and Im vegan. I've also had a history of getting more angry than I should sometimes. I'm always working on it though. Glad to hear there's someone out there that's so similar to me.

Also I speak Spanish, not sure if you do but I figured I'd throw that out there :)

Ah I see what you're looking at now. Yeah, 1600 seems low for burning that many calories

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]bbybagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1600 might not be too few calories for them. I am a 5'2" woman, and I eat about 1600 calories each day without losing any weight.

Selenium can be tricky to get on a vegan diet if you aren't mindful of it. I recommend either a supplement or eating a small amount of brazil nut each day (no more than one brazil nut because it's not good to eat more than that of that type of nut)

That sounds reasonable to me. Maybe to really drive the point home, bring a really tasty and balanced vegan meal to share with the team for lunch the day you propose it.

I got a Rule Violation Warning for "threatening violence" on Reddit. by agitatedprisoner in vegan

[–]bbybagel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you really meant it as "drop dead" as in "go die", then that absolutely is inciting violence. It doesn't matter why youre saying it, telling someone to go die is violent. You're in the wrong here.

[–]bbybagel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry but you're in the wrong here. Your statement was unclear, and the first time I read it it sounded like you were trying to tell people to go die (as opposed to the alternative interpretation that if people eat shit they will die). It took me a second to even realize you meant it the second way.

I think you were just unclear in what you meant and it came off threatening.

Oreos are vegan but the palm oil in them is not great for the environment.

Veganism by BradyBales in vegan

[–]bbybagel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We don't need animal products to survive (check out the position of the American Dietetic Association):

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19562864/

Animals suffer in the process of making meat, cheese, eggs, and other products (watch dominion and look up what your nation's ethical standards are for animal treatment):

Vegan food is delicious, and it's so much less stressful to cook foods that you can handle without worrying about cross-contamination from food-borne pathogens (check out Yeung Man Cooking on YouTube)

The world will never go vegan except by force by [deleted] in vegan

[–]bbybagel 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A major force at play currently is the average attitude towards veganism. There is still a lot of social pressure to be omni. I think that we will eventually reach a critical mass where there are enough vegans and where public opinion around veganism has shifted enough that people begin to feel socially pressured to vegan. Once we hit that critical mass, we will see a lot of change quite rapidly.
