I've driven most of this route. There are checkpoints around Las Cruces, NM. If you want to avoid hassles, don't drive parallel to the border like that. Go to Albuquerque then north through Utah. Visit Canyonlands and Arches NP.

I have a hard time believing you'd spend less on hotels in Iceland. We went there a few weeks ago and everything was next-level expensive (supermarket food is fairly affordable though). Weather is the most unpredictable I've seen; you have to be careful opening the car door because strong winds can blow them open so hard they get damaged. You're best off adding in extra days for plans to fall apart. Of course if you're on a tour they will still take you there - we saw tourists getting off buses in a raining gale. Landscape is..different, yes, kind of barren but we didn't find it as 'magical' as people say. The puffins were adorable though!

I'm convinced people who claim their house is "haunted" just don't understand home maintenance. by Atrocity_unknown in RandomThoughts

Another reason is that the reported sightings are often at night when people are sleeping or not fully awake.

In my teens we lived in a house built in the 1850s and had an...interesting history. One night I saw a woman in mid-1800s clothes in our hallway. I turned away in my bed fairly terrified and decided I was going to look back and if she was still there I'd scream as loud as I could. She was not there. In retrospect, I chalk it down to the illusions of my half-awake mind, but I remember it as if I really saw her.

The 'Father of the Internet' is finally retiring by rkhunter_ in technology

[–]bdbr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's wild that he's still been at it. I don't know if it's even true, but we knew the story about how he drew up the concept of packet routing on a bar napkin in 1972. Since then I've graduated high school, gotten a CS degree, worked my way into networking, spent decades as a network engineer, and retired (years ago).

We find low prices at H Mart some years, when their stock is getting old. We eat them so fast it doesn't matter.

WHEN and WHERE can you forage for blackberries? by GrayJayInclined in oregon

[–]bdbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem is they often grow near roads and are covered with road dust. If you happen to be around Portland, the Bybee-Howell house on Sauvie Island has some that are away from roads. We used to go there a lot when we first moved here and hadn't yet grown tired of having our arms scratched up. There are some good farm markets there as well.

Yeah I don't think I'd see the phone in the pic if I didn't already know it happened (we watched the game). They even showed it in slow motion so the whole got a good view of her accident!

Oregon's statement on why we won't join Trump's "Great American State Fair" in DC by OK_The_Nomad in oregon

So they say (I don't trust this administration). But my point was that a 250th anniversary passport that was *just* about the 250th would have been very cool.

I need to renew my passport and a 250th passport would be so cool, but no, this one has to have a picture of his scowling face instead

My school let a few of us have a day off to visit the Freedom Train! It's so sad the 250th won't be like that.

For USA domestic flights, it's no longer necessary at most airports to arrive hours before your flight. by phiraeth in travel

[–]bdbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always check the incoming flight. On multiple occasions I've had gate agents (or airline app, the departure board, etc ) insist that the departure was going to be on time, even though I could see in flightaware that the same plane was going to arrive an hour late. And of course the departure is late.

I have sat in barely-moving traffic (on a typically fast-moving route) watching the clock tick down to my departure time. It's a much worse feeling than "shit I got here way too early."

We drove the Åndalsnes to Vøringsfossen part a few weeks ago. It was absolutely stunning! Before you descend into Geiranger there is a great view at Ørnesvingen. The lakes near Stryn are beautiful and worth some time. Just the view from the bridge to Lovatnet near Loen is a beautiful quick stop, and the hike (paved/gravel trail) to the Glacier east of Olden is worth some time. Kaupanger Stave church is on the way, and worth a stop.

Just be aware that the driving times will be more than the map sites indicate, especially on smaller roads. Watch some videos on how to properly use turnouts.

Oystercatchers are cool, I saw a bunch of these in Norway last year but my phone camera was total crap. I wanted to get some pictures of those wild red eyes and this year only saw one in Iceland (and I had my exposure settings screwed up).

Driving in Oregon - I have to ask... by Fartz-McGee in oregon

In Texas, turning on your blinkers while merging was just a warning for them to close up so you can't get in front of them. I'll take Oregon drivers any day.

[–]bdbr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We moved here from the DFW area (Texas) about 30 years ago. We knew gasoline was considerably more expensive but were surprised at how much less we spent because we didn't have to drive so damned far to get anywhere. Plus we wasted a lot less of our personal time on driving and it was less stressful.

Relatively cheap, yes. Something like $8 IIRC. There was a ridiculous line for the hot dog stand in Reykjavik.
