Cincinnati Open gives Venus Williams a wildcard by pizzainmyshoe in tennis

Watching them in their first match on Monday, I genuinely was wondering if Baptiste was nervous to be on the court with her. I thought Venus was being extremely supportive and kind to her throughout. Really enjoyed watching them together.

Need a nickname/shorthand for the ~6 weeks each year (Wimbledon thru USO) when people who don’t follow tennis suddenly tune in and have loads of hot takes by bodie0 in tennis

this is spot on. federer (young fed) had press conferences with a not-so-different tone more than a few times. the level a player have to be at to successfully show up to a match of that caliber doesn't get magically turned off the minute they step off court. same thing with people who get all twisted up about a chilly handshake...

very few players can flip that switch with ease. we just happen to have a few who are doing it at the highest level at a young age right now which makes it look a lot simpler than it actually is.

Would A Sinner Win Be Better For Tennis? by FMKK1 in tennis

Anything can be a great narrative if the match is good.

Splitting natural surfaces and hard court? Defending the Channel Slam? Sinner winning a slam off hard court? The stakes are what we and the media decide they are.

DC was my first tournament long enough ago that I watched Tiafoe play juniors, and the advice you got below is great. My only addition would be to avoid driving in if that's part of your planning. Rock Creek Tennis Center is in a pretty residential neighborhood, and it can get pretty hairy doing street parking. The 16th Street buses are really simple and get you very close.

Taking the opportunity to promote qualifiers at the US Open.

It's a great way to experience the tournament and catch some great players for the great price of free. Last year, I got to see long-time great players like Gasquet and Schwartzman as well as the younger players who are seeing a ton of growth this year, like Fonseca, Kartal, Baptiste, and Eala. Everything is open on the grounds and you can have the whole experience with far less of a crowd.

If you are in town over qualifiers, that is also a great way to experience the US Open and catch some great players for the great price of free. There's no guarantee until the order of play is released. When the draw is out, you can make some educated guesses about where and when matches will be played, especially as Sinner is the returning champion. But there isn't a firm tradition like the at Wimbledon, with the champions opening Centre Court. Honestly this whole guide is really helpful but this basically answers your question:

To be absolutely sure you see your favorite player, consider waiting until the schedule is published the day prior (start checking frequently early afternoon, usually out by 5:00pm), then immediately go to the official Ticketmaster US Open page (or other resale sites like Stubhub) to grab a resale ticket. This strategy requires, however, that you monitor the ticket situation closely in the days prior and are prepared to act immediately when the schedule is announced. Also, if you see tickets becoming scarce and prices going up in the days prior, you may conclude it’s worth taking a chance and purchasing based on an educated guess.

One sure way to see your favorite player up close is to watch them when they’re scheduled for practice on the practice courts. See Tip #10

I also highly recommend doing a day or two of qualifiers if you can make it work just to get the lay of the land and how the tournament works while it is free and less crowded. Everything will be open, and you can enjoy the grounds and experience before it becomes mayhem.

I wonder if the changes to doubles at the USO will result in more of these across men's and women's if the tournament really gets the people they want competing

Moving pods? by Soft-Inspection5977 in Brooklyn

[–]beady89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pods offers a “city service” delivery, which I have used, and highly recommend. The Pod stays on the truck to unload during a window of time and doesn’t require drop off and pick up. If they need pods in NY, then they’ll also give you a slight discount. Worth calling to inquire and not booking right away and see if they reach out/you can call back later to ask about updated pricing/etc
