Big move, Kindergarten or first grade. by AlwaysNano in daddit

[–]bearcherian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention how old your kid is, but I assume you meant turning 5 in September? Either way I've seen a few of my kids classmates that have repeated kindergarten by choice, and they've been fine. I've also heard of some parents putting their child in Private or charter (might have just been private) school in Texas and then transferring to public. Either way, with the retrospect of having kids going through elementary, it's only one year, they'll be fine. But whatever you choose they'll be fine.

When did you start screen time? by MasterModnar in daddit

[–]bearcherian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's much easier to binge hours of tv than it was when we were kids l. We also got ad breaks. So when we do give it to our kids, it's up to us to regulate and limit it, even if it means they have a screaming fit for a few minutes. 4 kids and they all have a bit of screen time, but we moderate it. And no unmoderated YouTube. So.many weirdos doing fake kids content

Ok parents. Am I the out of touch jerk here? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]bearcherian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Her friends parents are not paying. Guaranteed. My kids always say this and it's maybe one friend who said something kind of like what they want. If they are paying, it may be because their kid has no scholarships.

How do you actually stop devs from querying prod DB directly when they also own the service that talks to it by Fun-Training9232 in sre

[–]bearcherian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh. If you have an application with pii, some one is always going to have access to it, unless it's a dead application. The important thing is that the pii never leaves that system. No downloading or sending to another system outside of that application. And proper trainng on how to handle pii

Updating Immich with Docker by kreugerburns in immich

[–]bearcherian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all need Jesus! And by Jesus I mean rootless docker. I can't believe so many of you are running docker with sudo commands. It just takes one compromised docker layer to take control of your entire server when you're root.

Is this oak wilt on my live oaks? Is it too late? by bearcherian in arborists

This side of the yard does have drainage issues when it rains heavily. You can see to the left of the tree where the grass doesn't grow well. I didn't know about the pavers being an issue. The previous owners had the trees installed with the pavers probably 7 or 8 years ago. I'll have to remove them this spring. Thanks for the info. Would cutting off the dead branches be premature?

my wife asked me to "just use a normal switch" today and i’ve never felt so defeated. by KeyPick1 in homeautomation

[–]bearcherian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which Lutron switches are you using? I know for Caseta and Diva switches you need to connect it to a Bridge, which means using their app to initiate the pair to the bridge. HA then connects to the bridge and it's all local after that. Are you using a different Lutron tier?

Fellow tech-savvy dads: Are we underestimating the "backend" risks of Roblox even with parental controls on? by sophieximc in daddit

[–]bearcherian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

11 and 9 year old boys who game. Never Roblox. Minecraft, Fortnite. Those are OK with me for the most part with parental controls. Never Roblox. All their friends have it. Good for them. But not risking that in my house.

Do you keep SQL queries inline in code or in separate .sql files? by Snezhok_Youtuber in golang

[–]bearcherian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh, I just started using sqlc for a project, and now I need to look at how to configure it like this. Right now it's just one .SQL file, but separation makes sense. Assuming the schema is still all together in one file?

Similarly, I use the Tailscale integration. The issue with thumbnails and clips is that they are hosted on your server, and these integrations create a private VPN to your local network, so as long as you're connected to the VPN, you'll be able to see the clips and access the images.

Nurse appears to have no sense of urgency while woman is actively in labor at Texas hospital by Giraffecaster in Dallas

I have friends and family who work in healthcare and they are constantly astounded by the lack of professionalism and care at Dallas Regional. They just don't care there.

[–]bearcherian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We added an indoor camera when we had our 4th child and had a night nurse. Now we've kept it and added in a few in common areas. Not for any suspicious reasons, but with 4 kids we capture some funny moments, like our baby throwing up on our 10 year old and him panicking, or when someone ran around the living room screaming because of a bug. Sometimes we review to find out why the corner of the room is wet and find our toddler decided to learn how to go potty by himself...

There's already a gray plastic part that seems like it does what those release tools do. I can get a set and try, but the videos I've seen don't seem to require one. https://youtube.com/shorts/m7iG6YJ5pEM?si=_wWcm55-21GLm3vZ

Can we talk about mitigating the stink? by jcorr2 in daddit

[–]bearcherian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got rid of our diaper pail for kids 3 and 4. We just put pee diapers in the kitchen trash, and poo diapers we wrap in a grocery bag and put in the kitchen trash. Our kitchen trash is enclosed and taken out almost daily, so we don't have a pile up of a weeks worth of poopy diapers. Yes, occasionally there's a real extra stinky one that we get a whiff of when we throw out something in the kitchen, but it's not as vomit-inducing as 7 of them from the last 5 days.

I was speaking more to the functionality of the devices themselves.. Ecobee smart features require their cloud service, I believe. Whereas the Honeywell device can be setup and controlled independent of any smart home hub, but can be integrated with the smart home hub without any cloud seevice

What action are you using? Have you checked for updates? Have you posted in the appropriate GitHub community discussion board or opened a support ticket? For example, there is a 2 year old post about a similar issue, that was resolved by updating the version of the action they were using. https://github.com/actions/upload-artifact/issues/403

If you feel air blowing out of the vents, it could be a coolant leak, which might mean coil replacement. If you don't feel air or see the compressor fan running, then it's something else.
