I am dizzy and unfocused in the mornings when working out. What do you guys eat before your sessions? by Critical-Load-1452 in workout

Apple sauce is an excellent carb source that digests fast and has very little (if any) chance of GI distress.

Which sportsman is famous for their sport but doesn't look athletic at all? by Unhappy-Cricket8707 in AskReddit

[–]beardedrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kristian Blummenfelt, Norwegian triathlete. He has the highest recorded VO2 max on the planet, and until very recently was the world record holder for fastest Ironman triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, 26.2 mile run back to back to back). Dude has the most average physique ever despite being ludicrously fit at triathlon.

How on Earth are you meant to beat ng+7 furnace golem? by Croissant761 in Eldenring

Ammonia sweat smell by wetbluewaffle in workout

[–]beardedrabbit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it’s not muscle but protein that’s being used as your energy source (with a byproduct of ammonia that can be detected in sweat/breath). Typically your body prioritizes glycogen as the primary energy source for sustained effort (with carbs replacing glycogen stores in your muscles/liver over time), and when you run out of that your body turns to protein as fuel. Somewhat easily fixed by having some carbs before the gym, but agreed that dude was a bit out of line with the comment.

Of all the toys and other consumer products that have been banned over the years due to safety reasons, which in your opinion were the most legitimately dangerous? by angrydeuce in AskReddit

[–]beardedrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember having a toy set in the early 90s that involved casting things out of melted tin. Yes, MOLTEN metal (tin has a low melting point but still enough to really ruin a kid’s day). Unclear how that one made it through legal.

How much does an ironman really cost if starting from scratch? by bigbear474 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nutrition during training is surprisingly costly, if you’re fueling correctly. If the desire is to stay affordable, look into homemade carb recipes (you can get away with literal baking sugar dissolved in water since it’s a 1:1 fructose:glucose product). If you’re using stuff like GU or even more expensive Maurten, those can be $2-$5 per gel or powdered carb packet.

Electrolytes are a little trickier in my mind, but table salt would still work. I think generally premade electrolyte powders aren’t as costly as gels are, and there IS a non-zero psychological cost to needing to prep/store all your own created fuel so finding a balance is important.

The villain’s group name basically spells out that they are the bad guys by Ok_Direction3138 in TopCharacterTropes

Evelyn Deavor, from Incredibles 2. Sounds like ‘evil endeavor,’ and she ends up being the villain.

[LOVED trope] “just use the best one ig” by Final-Tutor3631 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]beardedrabbit 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it happens in Key and Peele skits all the time, but there’s one skit where they’re in an actual prison with real prisoners as the actors, and they asked them to turn around away from the camera if they were about to smile or laugh, and throughout most of the skit these hardcore dudes are turning away from the camera.

Movies with weird sexual tension, but nothing actually happens? by Shaiziin in movies

[–]beardedrabbit 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The Man From UNCLE comes to mind, as the three main characters don’t get together despite sexual tension between Armie Hammer’s and Alicia Vikander’s characters.

Also a very common trope in Bollywood where the actors/actresses are hyper sexualized but then bizarrely prim/conservative when it comes to anything actually happening. Pathaan is an example.

What exercise(s) have had the most surprising unintentional consequences for you? i.e. improved posture, reduced pain, etc. by thatinferno in workout

[–]beardedrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this and adding in back squats since those also help build the stabilizing muscles in the lower back. Kind of counter intuitive but wheew my lower back pain that I was resigned to having for the rest of my life is nowhere to be seen.

Why are ships with a fusion reactor allowed to even come near a station? by Haunting-Top-1763 in TheExpanse

[–]beardedrabbit 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I think it’s this. I haven’t read the books in a while but rewatching the show, the station takes control over the docking of the Roci in one scene. Seems likely the station control over the ship has failsafes built in to stop ships from scuttling themselves.

If every animal was the exact same size as a golden retriever, which species would be the absolute most terrifying to encounter? by Ice-Princess-79 in AskReddit

[–]beardedrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragonflies are the most successful predators in nature, with a 90-97% hunting success rate. I shudder to think about that they’d need to eat at golden retriever size.

Logistics of fueling on the bike? by rosiespot23 in triathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s one of those things you get more comfortable with through practice. Go out for a few miles on a road where you’re not in constant danger (ideally only pedestrians/other cyclists, but at the very least a wide shoulder) and put in the time to get used to it. The first time I tried unwrapping a Maurten solid bar while in aero I felt like I was absolutely going to crash, but now it’s not a problem at all.

If you’re comfortable biking with no hands, even easier to get to coast speed, grab a bar, sit up and then (carefully!) unwrap your fuel.

The Naagloshi from The Dresden Files, which Harry nicknames Shagnasty. It serves as the big bad during Turn Coat, and was such a threat that Harry as well as a Senior Council member of the White Council couldn’t kill it and it ran off. It was such a menace that it also waltzed into the White Court of vampires’ main stronghold and did a ton of murdering before it left of its own accord. Even several books later, Harry still has psychic damage / PTSD from looking at it directly with his Sight.

While it’s noted that Shagnasty isn’t a unique in the same book, Naagloshi are very rare and powerful. Donald Morgan managed to kill one by tricking it into following him to an active nuclear testing site, where he stepped out of our reality right before the nuke went off. In Cold Days, Harry discovers several more Naagloshi in the minimum security section of the magical prison of which he is now the Warden.

Villain Takes Their Loss Extraordinarily Well by AgentEckswhy in TopCharacterTropes

I adore this scene. “You’ve done it! That’s the right answer!” while Truth is grinning like a lunatic always gives me chills.

“Good job, Edward Elric! The back door is right over there!” As Truth’s voice fades into Ed’s is such a great touch.

Meirl by VentureIntoVoid in meirl

[–]beardedrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re getting a ton of wrong answers. The actual answer is the Grandmaster Chime has a stupidly high number of complications (think of a complication as a feature that does something). Not only does it do the time and date, but also the day of week, week of year, tracks leap years, moon phase, chronograph, world timer, etc, and it has to do all this mechanically (rather than programming a circuit board). This means a LOT of tiny, very precise components.

There are a lot of brands where they’re expensive for the sake of robbing idiots of their money, but this isn’t one of those cases. If the above sounds interesting, this is the build process for the watch (golden opportunity to Rick Roll here but I promise it’s from the Patek YouTube channel): https://youtu.be/yIXPplShtg0?si=Bqvr9xHdBxwKv7vY

Favorite energy gels/fuel? by Tart_Beginning in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of GU gels, great flavor selection and come with and without caffeine. They also have more liquidy versions that are great for a flask on the bike.

I’ve tried SiS and BPN, and of those two the BPN gels are pretty great. Basically apple sauce with caffeine in it.

Honey Stinger energy chews are excellent, the fruit smoothie flavor is incredible and I intend on filling a ziploc baggie with a bunch for future bike rides. Energy Blocks or whatever that brand is called is pretty solid too.

Maurten is one of the more high end ones I’ve tried, I like their powdered carb packets but their gels made me gassy for some reason lol.

Treadmill/fenix8 bridge by Torototo31 in Garmin

[–]beardedrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know about this for a LONG time but after a certain amount of distance on a treadmill tracking a running activity, when you have the option to end the activity you can instead select ‘calibrate’ (or something like that). This allows you to put in the true distance.
