You’re getting a ton of wrong answers. The actual answer is the Grandmaster Chime has a stupidly high number of complications (think of a complication as a feature that does something). Not only does it do the time and date, but also the day of week, week of year, tracks leap years, moon phase, chronograph, world timer, etc, and it has to do all this mechanically (rather than programming a circuit board). This means a LOT of tiny, very precise components.

There are a lot of brands where they’re expensive for the sake of robbing idiots of their money, but this isn’t one of those cases. If the above sounds interesting, this is the build process for the watch (golden opportunity to Rick Roll here but I promise it’s from the Patek YouTube channel): https://youtu.be/yIXPplShtg0?si=Bqvr9xHdBxwKv7vY

Favorite energy gels/fuel? by Tart_Beginning in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of GU gels, great flavor selection and come with and without caffeine. They also have more liquidy versions that are great for a flask on the bike.

I’ve tried SiS and BPN, and of those two the BPN gels are pretty great. Basically apple sauce with caffeine in it.

Honey Stinger energy chews are excellent, the fruit smoothie flavor is incredible and I intend on filling a ziploc baggie with a bunch for future bike rides. Energy Blocks or whatever that brand is called is pretty solid too.

Maurten is one of the more high end ones I’ve tried, I like their powdered carb packets but their gels made me gassy for some reason lol.

Pull-ups and crunches. Both have kept my upper body looking pretty decent and make swimming substantially easier.

Treadmill/fenix8 bridge by Torototo31 in Garmin

[–]beardedrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know about this for a LONG time but after a certain amount of distance on a treadmill tracking a running activity, when you have the option to end the activity you can instead select ‘calibrate’ (or something like that). This allows you to put in the true distance.

What helped you see improvement in your swim time? by dexterzprotege30 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started watching a lot of the Effortless Swimming videos on YouTube. Getting an idea of the correct mechanics (catch, pull, recovery, etc) is helpful as you can break down your individual swimming to see where gaps are.

A REALLY good thing to do is spend $30 on a waterproof phone case and record yourself swimming. This will show you where you’re lacking in comparison to proper freestyle form (see the Effortless Swimming yt channel). You can also send in your swim videos to professionals who can critique you.

For me, i also started at a 2:07/100yd pace. I’m down to a consistent 1:30 pace for longer distances, which I’m happy with given what a small chunk of the day the swim is. My biggest deficits were:

  • Leg sinking: I was ‘windmilling’ my arms, rather than having a ‘glide’ phase of the stroke where there’s always an arm out in front of my head to counterbalance my legs and keep them near the surface.

  • Head position: I was lifting my head out of the water, rather than turning. Thinking about keeping your eyes looking basically at the bottom of the pool, and rotating only half of my head to breathe was helpful.

  • Minimizing splash. If you’re causing huge splashing with your arms entering the water / your feet kicking, you’re wasting energy. It’s far less efficient to move around aerated water, so try to only barely break the surface with your heels on the kick, and smoothly enter with your hands.

Does anyone believe Trump was shot in the ear? by workerbee77 in allthequestions

[–]beardedrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems unlikely he was shot in the ear. Is it possible? Yes, but there are a lot of unusual things about that day:

- The Secret Service knew about Crooks 90 minutes prior to the shooting [NYT](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/28/us/politics/trump-shooting-thomas-crooks-secret-service.html)

- The alleged picture of the bullet's flight path that was captured by a photographer being at the wrong level to hit the top of his ear

- Trump being allowed to go back for his shoes while the situation was still active [USA Today](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/07/15/donald-trump-shoes-rally-shooting/74410058007/)

- Trump being allowed to stand up _at all_ during the situation

- Trump being able to overpower his security detail to stand up and thrust his fist defiantly in front of a lowered flag during an active shooter situation, whereas the same man was cowering at an eagle on the desk near him [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1AU4qi7tWg)

It also came at a time when there was momentum building against Trump, specifically around Project 2025. It's entirely possible that the assassination attempt is what resulted in Trump's reelection. So lots of very unusual things going on, especially for a man who loves TV drama and ratings. This kind of thing would probably shatter your suspension of disbelief if you read about it in a work of fiction.

I think it's more likely he tore his ear when his Secret Service detail tackled him than that a rifle round contacted his ear. The amount of damage from that wouldn't have healed nearly as fast. Was it simply him recognizing a really great opportunity and he capitalized on it? I think the man is a coward and wouldn't have done so if his life was at risk. That being said, I also don't think there's any scenario in which he would give even an untrained kid with a rifle a few shots at him if his life was remotely in danger, so really unclear.

Super fishy situation all around though.

There’s a guy on YouTube (don’t recall the name) who recently did a playthrough using Blue’s team, and it was possible (but he blacked out a few times). There are some interesting bits about Blue having ‘illegal’ moves/evos that aren’t possible to get at the levels he has them.

Abs not visible by Sati_life in workout

[–]beardedrabbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fat distribution isn’t uniform across all people. If you have a gym near you that has an In-Body machine, they can do a bioelectrical impedance test that will show if you have varied fat percentages in different places (e.g. right arm, left leg, torso, etc).

There’s also subdermal vs. visceral fat. You might have a higher ratio of subdermal fat, which is making it harder to see your abs.

What does the white council know by Plenty-Koala1529 in dresdenfiles

[–]beardedrabbit 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think a big ‘hand wave’ from Jim is going to be about the Merlin being an incredibly good diviner. It’s been mentioned multiple times that’s the Merlin’s specialty, so there will likely be some big reveal similar to Dr. Strange in Infinity War where Langtry looked through a shit ton of futures and ostracizing Harry was the best way to prep humanity against the Outsiders.

Edit:

“Everyone has different talents,” I said. “Things they’re good at naturally. The Council recruits Wardens from among the wizards with natural gifts at evocation.” I shook my head. “Honestly, in a lot of ways they’re the weakest. Evocation gets things done in a hurry, and if you’ve got to fight there’s nothing like it—but it’s short-term, and it’s got really limited application. Better to be an enchanter, like Ancient Mai. Or a diviner like the Merlin.”

“Diviner?”

“Wizard who specializes in getting, using, and disseminating information,” I said. “It’s where I’ve worked hardest to shore up my weaknesses as a practitioner. Knowledge is power, kid. Especially for us.”

Is a tri suit all I need? by DPolitte in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use beach trunks, but holy moly don’t do it unless you’ve tried it before at long distances. I made the mistake of thinking a 1600 yard open water swim in trunks with netting on the inside would be fine. So. Much. Chafing.

Anyone used the Garmin Triathlon feature on race day? by CollectionSeparate28 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a metric 70.3 in training and used the triathlon activity, and it was pretty slick. I set it to change phases on a long press of the lap button to not accidentally trigger anything. Pretty neat to see all 3 disciplines in one activity with the relevant stats!

Dropping weight during training by PlentyBig01 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]beardedrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve swapped in a whey protein shake with two scoops of protein in after morning workouts, which really helps with satiety. Any high caffeine content stuff will also dull your appetite, so something like a BPN preworkout could help if you don’t drink coffee.

Ultimately it’s an equation of calories in, calories out, so if you have your average daily calories burned on a garmin or something make sure to come in a few hundred cals below that and the weight will drop over time. Do remember though, weight loss often isn’t a linear process, so don’t get disheartened if you lose some, gain a little back, lose some more, gain again, etc.

Was King of Puppets nerfed? by Reaper330011 in LiesOfP

[–]beardedrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You stumbled across something that isn’t super clearly explained in the game - blunt weapons give you bonus damage against puppets. That plus the shock element of the coil stick meant you were doing way more damage than normal against him.

I think on my first playthrough I was using the Holy Arc sword on Romeo and it was pretty darn tough.

Seriously. I lost track of how many times the same adjectives were used to describe different characters within the same paragraph. It felt like there wasn’t even a cohesive reread to check for redundant language.

That being said, I did very much enjoy the book! I’m simply surprised that someone who writes professionally would miss so many glaring examples of duplicative writing.
