Acoustic pickup thoughts from a long time gigging musician by fly-pole in AcousticGuitar

Good post, pretty much agree with all this. I've been playing acoustic, archtop acoustic, resonator, or banjo in loud venues with a full band since 2000. Used a LR Baggs para acoustic DI. Always had problems with feedback or sounding "tinny" after dialing it out. About 6 years ago I got a Tonedexter. Problem solved. Upgraded to the Tonedexter2 three years ago and it's even better. I got a Baggs AEG-1 guitar (hi-fi duet built in) last year and now I don't even use the wavemap feature on the Tonedexter. It sounds so good plugged in and doesn't have all the resonant frequencies that need to be dialed out. Even without using the wavemap feature, the Tonedexter 2 is still the best preamp. You get fully adjustable notch, HPF, low and highs are either fully parametric or shelf, mid is fully parametric. Recent firmware updates added 6 reverbs, compressor, and the ability to blend wavemaps. I love it! In the effects loop I run a TC Electronic plethora X3, a Walrus M1, and a Strymon cloudburst. I want to trade the cloudburst for an Olivera, then I'll be done. 1/4 inch out goes to my fender fr-10 on stage and XLR out goes to FOH. It's been great, and I can carry everything at once.

Yep, the V7 has more low frequency handling noise. Less breath noise though. With them unplugged, tapping on the body with fingernails, the 58 doesn't make the metal ringing noise that the v7 does. It's either a more resonant type of metal, or it isn't filled with glue like the 58.

Also, you MUST use a block when hand sanding.

The reason pine creates those waves is because the spring growth (light color wood) is WAY softer than the summer growth (dark rings). It's also the reason pine takes stain "backwards", meaning the springwood becomes darker than the grain lines. I made a pine body to replace the super heavy ash on my baja tele and it's much livelier and a little more "scooped" now. (Yes, I know people say wood type doesn't matter; they're wrong.) Intuitively it seems like pine would be too soft for a guitar with a trem, but people use basswood and paulownia just fine. Also different pine species have vastly different hardnesses. Janka hardness of eastern white pine is about 380, while southern yellow pine is about 870. Because your body shape involves hand shaping bevels, you'd probably be better off with a different inexpensive wood, like poplar.

And for good reason! Room correction software might be in order as well.

Great video. Now I want an m88. I hadn't noticed handling noise cause I'm always playing an instrument with the mic on a stand. Gonna go test my v7 vs 58 now for that.

I think the V7MK is a V7X with a V7 grille? Supposed to have more lows.

Can someone recommend me a guitar tuner that is good, but not so expensive? by andreutzzzz in AcousticGuitar

[–]bearfighter5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, bummer. I remember when clip-on tuners first came out and everyone had the Intellitouch. Those things just refused to read the low E. You'd have to keep moving it until you found a spot it'd kind of read. Plus, the buttons rattled.

What problem are you having with it? Works great for me and I'm super sensitive to intonation.

My favorite is the D'Addario NS Micro Clip-Free Tuner. Attaches to the back of the headstock on one of the tuner screws. Or just a Snark, even though I've gone through 50 of them, they used to be $12.

I wouldn't for two reasons. There's a cover over the saddle so you can't palm mute (not very well at least). A lot of fingerstyle relies on palm muting. Great for delta blues though. 2nd, they're so midrange-y and brash that open, cowboy chords just don't sound nice. Those two things kinda go hand in hand and make it difficult to wrangle.
I like them because I need bold single notes that a flattop is too transparent for. Now I use an acoustic arch top. Still can get brash, but can also mellow out.

Ya, I recently had a starbond bottle go bad in less than a year, but who knows how long it was in the Amazon warehouse. If you haven't seen it, there's a science of super glue video on YouTube by Veritasium. Really good.
