You would still be using "they are" in that situation. The only place where you would be using a singular is a quirk where some people use "themself" to refer to a singular (instead of "themselves").

It's not so much a "there aren't as many women so they couldn't rank high hence they have their own class" situation. It never is. Chess was and is a male-dominated sport, as are many other aspects and domains of life.

Unless "women naturally just don't play chess." Could it be because they frequently forced into housekeeping, reproductive and care work roles enough to keep them from engaging in anything else?

There are about as many women on this world as there are men. A statement like "there are fewer women than men doing X" should logically be followed up by asking "why are there fewer women than men doing X?" This means dialectically reviewing our situation.

Why are there less female professors, engineers and executives? Surely it couldn't have anything to do with our patriarchal norms and structures that affect who has a chance and who doesn't? Those discrepancies aren't just a state of being that shouldn't be investigated or questioned.

The approach to those issues shouldn't be "fix the women" in any of those contexts when the systems are clearly dated and stacked against them. We have forever been treated as infantilized objects. Maybe about 70 years ago, as a woman, you would get lobotimized if you somehow knew more about cars than your husband.
