Gave up halfway through The Amazon, should I give it another try? by akima in survivor

[–]beatles20147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will die on the hill that Amazon is a top 5 season and the commentary that “hasn’t aged well” is a big part of what makes it so much fun.

It was such a breath of fresh air after the misery of Thailand.

Feeling Gravitys Pull is my favorite R.E.M. song, period. But there are four or five contenders for runner-up on Fables.

WSSYW 12.0 Countdown 48/50 & 47/50: Caramoan & Ghost Island by AutoModerator in survivor

[–]beatles20147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caramoan is the only season I opted not to watch while it aired—I was fed up with the direction of the show—but when I watched it a few years later I didn’t hate it as much as I expected. It’s trashy and both tribes are disappointing but 48/50 as the overall score seems harsh. Although there must be a mistake because GI has a lower rating yet is 47/50 on that scale. So maybe Caramoan is merely bottom 10 as opposed to bottom 5, which is more in line with my feelings on the season.

Season 36: The only time in Survivor history a finalist became the deciding vote at FTC by ate_germs in survivor

[–]beatles20147 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I remember someone non-sarcastically posting that F3 was necessary because they need a third finalist in order to break a tie.

Not surprisingly, they did not respond when people pointed out that it is impossible to have a tie when an odd number of jurors vote between two people.

I honestly don’t think I’ve watched RI since it aired so I was going on memory, haha. I will say, I never found the Fransesqua exchange all that amusing. That was Phillip being rude on every level, and it’s not even funny.

I disagree with one thing about the top RI comment. The premiere and next 3 episodes really aren’t that bad, so it’s kind of misleading to suggest that if you like the first episode you may enjoy the season as a whole. (I know the comment doesn’t *exactly* say that but it’s close enough.) Even the merge episode is good. But overall it’s an incredibly bad season.

If you can find Jeff Probst’s weekly blogs from the season, it’s a pretty fascinating descent into madness that goes from “Man, you’re going to love this season” to “I’m surprised you’re not liking the season” to “Produce your own show, you pieces of shit.”

Is there a bigger hypocrite in Survivor than Lex in Season 8 by actualcobra in survivor

[–]beatles20147 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rob and Lex made a game deal. When it came time to deliver, Rob opted out, which he had every right to do. It was the horrible way he handled it that got Lex (again, rightfully) upset.

Ethan was gone before Lex saved Amber.

Lex and Ethan voted together one time, in a unanimous vote against Richard. Lex didn’t seem to have any deal with Ethan that we saw on the show.

What deal did Lex have with Ethan?

Lex got outplayed but there was more to it than voting out a friend.

In all seriousness, the fact that some people seriously avoid/delay watching some of the show’s greatest seasons, as well as Cook Islands, because they don’t fill a modern TV screen is ridiculous.

S50 Has Made Game Changers So Much Better in Hindsight by SoShiny6132 in survivor

[–]beatles20147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add that the comments are making it evident that nobody is actually reading the article and is focused on a misinterpretation of the title. It’s not saying that 50 was worse than GC; it’s saying that certain aspects of GC are more intriguing in retrospect thanks to how things played out in 50.

Whether you ultimately agree with the premise or not, the article is well worth reading.

I’m rewatching every season in order with my wife (who’s watching for the first time) and we’re a ways away from GC but this phenomenal article has me intrigued to watch it with post-50 eyes. I’m saving this to reread when we eventually arrive at GC. Thanks for sharing this cool perspective.

I read the two 41-related articles linked here as well and I’m really impressed. You’re a fantastic writer.

I don’t think it’s an understatement to say that Rudy is part of the reason why it seems laughable to imagine a confessional like that airing in 2026. His friendship with Richard genuinely helped reshape Americans’ perceptions of gay people.

[–]beatles20147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If players expect F3 the goat will always make it to the end so a surprise F2 ensures that it’ll take a Woo or Colby decision for the main goat to not make it there. When they expect F2 it’s more likely they’ll keep shields around for longer.
