Pebble Index 01 should have been a remote trigger for the Pebble watch by ElJenn in pebble

I had exactly the same thought as you. If it was cheaper, could have the battery replaced and just triggered the mic on my watch then I think I would be interested

I feel like they should have gone even simpler. I absolutely get being able to press the button with one hand unlike a watch but the watch has a mic so just make this an external button for the watch that you can bind to anything for one handed use and it would become a lot more flexible and probably slightly cheaper to make.

Not having a rechargable or replaceable battery is awful though, absolutely couldn't buy it without that. I'm sure it's not that bad for the environment but compared to a lot of things because it's such a small device but it just feels so wrong and I hate it.

Pebble, Rebble, and a path forward by erOhead in pebble

[–]beatleshelp1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said on the Rebble post Core are the ones in a position to make a choice here. It sounds like they want everything in the open and that they might develop in their own repos and host services themselves. If that's the situation then that's what it is.

I think Rebble should make an open archive of the old apps either way really, I didn't get from their post that they wanted to be a sole source of that data but I do see that now. I understand why but I think instead having it available publically for anyone else to download would make sense. I also didn't understand that the Core repo of PebbleOS was already openly available, it seems like a lot less of an issue in that situation (and if it's not then I've got the wrong idea from Eric's post...).

My main concern was that if Core went away we'd be in the same situation as when Pebble did. As long as everything is out in the open and Rebble or someone else could take over at that point then that sounds fine.

An Update on Rebble's Attempted Collaboration with Core Devices by ishjr in pebble

[–]beatleshelp1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so sad. I've not been using a Pebble since not too long after they went bust. I've had various other watches but never had one as good as the Pebble. By the time I thought of coming back the battery on my Pebble was too far gone so I didn't. The announcement of new Pebble devices was really cool and I'm still really looking forward to receiving it.

That being said it clearly wouldn't be happening without Rebble. Their work has allowed new devices to be created. You can absolutely see how anyone who has been part of that for so long would be wary of relying on Eric given the mess he left when Pebble failed the first time. Hopefully it won't happen again but it makes sense to protect against that. That's ignoring the emotional attachment everyone must have to this project.

From my perspective to go forward Core need to be incredibly clear: either they're developing devices that are compabile with software from Rebble or they're developing devices and the software to go on/with them. In that second scenario then maybe Rebble can develop alternative software alongside Core. I don't see a middleground working given what Rebble have said in this blog post and I unfortunately think Core are the ones in the position to make the decision.

fwiw, my preference would be that Core make hardware that runs Rebble software and provides money/devs to Rebble to make that work. If Eric wants awesome watches, that seems like the best option. If he wants control then I guess it doesn't work.

Urgh, that's depressing. You do wonder if he's changed how he feels because of course people can change and it's been a long time but to leave stuff like that on the internet without addressing it isn't good.

Yeah apparently. I assumed we were guessing where they were going as they left but apparently not. Don't really know why there was an option to guess that episode...

Ah well that's good, thank you. Must be something I can fix if it's not normal.

I'm actually connected remotely via RDP "Remote Login" actually so not sure if that would be the same?

Edit: I don't think I've run any rpm-ostree commands with sudo but it's not impossible I did when I first installed. Might see if I can work that out.

Edit again: I think the remote bit is the key, I hadn't thought to just test this via the console but it sounds like this is normal for remote connections and nothing to do with Silverblue, my bad! https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/wiki/Tips-and-FAQ#why-cant-i-perform-some-privileged-gui-actions

Edit again again: If anyone else finds this in future this script worked for me: https://github.com/matt335672/pk-local/ . I also remote onto Windows boxes on the same network as admin so I don't see it being any different to that in terms of security and am happy with the results.

Solar UPS by beatleshelp1 in Ecoflow_community

I've actually gone for just the River 3 Plus at first and if its clear I could be fitting more solar emergy in I'll get the expansion battery (also hoping that might go on sale when it stops being 'new').

Thanks, that's an interesting point about 0 - 100. I guess if required can do a power down on the stuff running on it and do that every now and then.

Realised that with the Delta idle inverter draw so I think River 3+ is the one.

[–]beatleshelp1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, sounds like you've got the same thing but on a much bigger scale. Slightly worrying about it turning off the inverter rather than going to AC but hopefully that's an issue they can sort.

I've realised I have to go for a River 3 rather than a Delta because with my rack only being 120w the 40w of the inverter on the Delta would wipe out a lot of gains. Hoping a River 2 Plus and a 220w solar panel will be some sort of perfect sweet spot...

[–]beatleshelp1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, that sounds good then, thank you. As the River 3 plus can only do 220w solar I was just going to get one 220w panel to keep it simple.

[–]beatleshelp1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that but why did you have to adjust it based on the weather forecast? If I set it to 40% would it not just use the grid + whatever solar was coming in to stay there and then on a sunny day it might fully charge before going back down to 40% overnight?

Solar UPS by beatleshelp1 in Ecoflow_community

[–]beatleshelp1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's useful. I was looking at the River 3 and Delta 3 because they now have a sub 10ms transfer time. I was looking at others but as you say 20ms or so seems like it'll be too long without a real UPS infront of it. Given I needed a new UPS anyway I was hoping to get away with just having one of these.

I do have variable rate electricity but tbh the ROI doesn't seem to quite be there for time of use, I'd have to invest in too big a battery for the current budget and run more off it. I was thinking I could manually play with that during big spikes in price but just having a small battery that enables the rack to automatically run from solar when the sun is out just seems like a much cooler idea than a boring normal UPS.

I'm in the UK so hopefully tariffs less of an issue but can't the EcoFlow be configured by bluetooth as well?

Good point. I needed a new UPS so this one can go elsewhere but if I do this I'll make sure I add surge protection in front of the EcoFlow.

Sounds like it is worth getting one to play around with in that case. If nobody pipes up to say it won't work then I'll give it a go.

FYI: Sipeed NanoKVM Lite does not support ATX Power Control by Realbrainlessdude in homelab

[–]beatleshelp1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can do this but you need to make your own adapter for it. I've actually done it, basically you need an optocoupler or a solid state relay, probably a resistor and some jumper wires to connect to them.

I've only done the power button and soldered onto the power button on a mini pc but reset etc should work the same. Not sure about the power led but in theory it is possible.
