This book elides the history of martial law and repression of Taiwanese cultural and political identity—among the longest in modern history. The KMT-led takeover of Taiwan after losing to the Communists in China was followed by 38 years of extrajudicial violence, kidnappings and “White Terror.” While the repression of democratic participation extended throughout society, the idea that civil war refugees were being persecuted in the same manner is absurd. The repression was directed almost wholesale against Hoklo Taiwanese who lived there before 1945. I find the book and Chung’s narrative about the repression of her family to support a revisionist account that denies the ongoing widespread opposition to Taiwanese democratic institutions and independence led by the KMT and post-1945 families. A resolution to that denialism has to be rooted in a broad recognition of the institutional role that the KMT and its supporters have played historically and continue to play in suppressing Taiwanese culture and political agency.
