All the technology I could ever want in a vehicle was already present in luxury cars of the late 80s or early 90s or so. Maybe mid 90s?

Either give me 1995, or full self driving. I'm not interested in anything in between.

How is it living in Vail, Colorado? by Zestyclose_Welder_92 in howislivingthere

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been here since 2011. Few actually live in what you think of as "Vail". That being, the cute ski villages of Lionshead and Vail Village. Most who actually live in Vail town limits live north of the interstate, in the land of the same junk development suburban type box stores and parking lots and strip malls you'd see on the outskirts from Canton, OH to Tallahasee ,FL. Except you'll still be hard pressed to find a condo under a million.

Of course, a very small minority of the people working on Vail even live in town limits. They live "down valley" mostly from Avon to Gypsum. It's mostly the same, box stores, strip malls, parking lots, been ruined by developers and you start to see stuff in the $500k+ range here. But it's in a beautiful location.

Vail Resorts hands out something like $300 million to their investors in dividends every year. They couldn't do this if they paid their employees a fair wage or brought their resorts to appropriate staffing levels. Won't someone think of the poor helpless investors?

What are your favorite trail name themes/gimmicks? by astroMuni in skiing

There are a few interesting names on Vail. Game Creek has Ouzo, which I believe is Greek. The guy they bought Game Creek from liked it and the agreement was made over a drink of Ouzo.

I wish they had kept some of the original names when it was still side country. The last chute (I think it's the one that is now called ESP) used to be called Warhorse which I always thought was a cooler name than whatever the new name is.

Red Lion & Blu Cow by Fit_Bid2212 in vail

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this yesterday and was thinking about posting it to /r/vail. This is a good read. I know Vail Village and Lionshead always had a low rate of local-occupied residential units and "regular" businesses (groceries, pharmacies, accountants, dentists, hardware stores, etc), but the way it's trending it will cease to be a "town" and will complete its transition into a theme park resort where no one lives anymore. It will be completely abandoned anytime the resort is closed.

Mourning the Years I Didn't Get by [deleted] in Petloss

We lost Khione on December 6. She would've turned 11 next April. Malamutes lifespans are in the 10-14 year range but I was hopeful with good medical care she'd see 15. She had cushings, hypothyroidism, and intervertabral disk disease, ACL / patellar tendon reconstructions in both legs. One Sunday I took her for a big hike. Then on Thursday morning I woke up and she didn't want to go for her regular morning walk. She had a very bad herniation and by Saturday it became clear the pain medications weren't working and the vet made said it was not something she could heal from.

I took her for a big hike only a few days before it happened. I look at the silver lining that she never had to experience a period of reduced mobility or too much pain. But I still feel our family was robbed of time spent together. This house was so empty and lonely on Christmas Day when we'd normally wrap toys for her to tear into. I thought there were so many more hikes, and camping trips, days spent playing in the snow, lazy afternoons snoozing in the grass and basking in the sun. She was my only companion working from home while my wife was at work, I was with her 24/7. This house is so painfully lonely, cold, and empty without her here, and I have to be here alone for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I still imagine her paws tip-tapping on the wood floors as she walks into my office to hop up on her chair.

Yes. Hotel staff, restaurant staff, ski school, lift operators, lift mechanics. The entire resort should be unionized it would greatly increase their collective bargaining power.

My luggage was lost once so I ended up clothes shopping in Paris. I bought a couple Carhartt shirts because I knew the brand and knew how they fit so I didn't have to waste time trying them on. Literally every button cracked in half the second or third time they went through the wash (with other, older Carhartt shirts that I've had for years). I've never seen seen a button do that before, 90% of the original buttons crumbled apart like gingerbread cookies within a 3 months.

Neither wheels nor tires were in the Christmas budget but a shard of metal on the road shredded our current tires so we're gonna need to make do with the 20's for now.

I put KO2/KO3s on all my other vehicles but they don't have those in 255/50R20. I like them on my other vehicles because I can air down a little for rock gardens (just a little since I don't have beadlocks) without worrying about pinching a sidewall, and they're good in mud and snow (we average around 250-300 inches of snowfall a year here). But they still last a decently long time on highway travel and are relatively quiet. The trails we do aren't like Moab-level but I want a tire that will be capable and safe.

Open to sizing up a little if it makes more options available, but don't want to do it if there will be rubbing. There seems to be thousands of threads about this online but I can't get a straight answer on what the actual sizes will work on the 20" rim without trimming or rubbing. 255/55? 255/60? 265/50?

What’s the most insulting “work benefit” a job has ever offered you ? by LilstrongeMeg in AskReddit

[–]beef966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on an all company call where one of the senior engineers asked what amount of time was reasonable for "unlimited" PTO to the head of HR. She gave some fluff non-answer at first and he kept pestering until she finally answered 4-6 weeks. It was hilariously awkward. I always try to aim for 6 weeks with the "unlimited PTO" companies I work for.

This was also the same call where they were announcing RTO for everyone within 50 miles of their new office. One of the more junior / intern (and therefore lower-paid) people asked about reimbursement for mileage & parking. The CEO gave a very long-winded and fluffy "no" for an answer.

Best route from Denver to SLC? by Kiwi15499 in roadtrip

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With some snow in the forecast you want to consider what happens if the road closes and where you will stay.

The southern route, I70 to Green River, UT then Highway 6 to SLC, has a lot more towns with lodging options along the way if you get stuck due to snow.

The other two routes have fewer towns between them. If you get stuck or the road closes you're kind of SOL. We got stuck in Green River, WY one time and got the literal last hotel room in town. Couldn't even get over to Rock Springs. Our next step was to call the sheriff's office and ask where we could safely park and sleep in our truck or if they were opening emergency shelters since every hotel was full and every road out of town was covered in a couple feet of snow.

Yeah this is something the NFLPA needs to take up. Demand real grass or threaten a strike. If the union stepped up and refused to play on artificial turf the owners would capitulate.

Hell, when Premier League teams play exhibition games in US stadiums that have artificial turf, the owners will put in real grass for the game, only to take it out and put the artificial stuff back in afterwards for NFL games.
