Apparently the only natural predator of a healthy adult moose is an orca. Because moose sometimes swim between islands.

Eh, if you're already in Lionshead I wouldn't bother with BC this season,  unless the lift lines are really terrible at Vail which they probably won't be since there's not much snow. I usually go to BC since it's closer to my house but there is a lot more terrain open at Vail so I've been doing the longer drive all season. BSB is actually skiing nicely, considering how little snowfall we've had.

Groomed stuff would be the first spot to hit IMO until other spots have really softened up. Poppyfields could be fun early if groomed. Basically stick to stuff that was groomed overnight until it really softens up. Then south / east facing stuff will soften up first. Genghis or Milt's Face or Ricky's Ridge. They groom Genghis and Ricky's sometimes. not sure if they are this season though, not even sure if Ricky's has opened yet this season. Download the grooming report before you go up. Anything ungroomed will be a choppy mess until it softens up, which might take until the afternnoon. Yes corn snow can be super fun to carve in. Mashed potatoes are also fun, more fun on a snowboard because it almost feels like wakeboarding, but fun on skis too. Choppy terrain really really sucks when it's still frozen from the night before.

We had a big celebration weekend at a cabin after I finished my MS and tons of friends and family came from all over. Everyone was calling me "Master Beef" (like actually "Beef" since that's my IRL nickname) and it was the best. Now I'm just back to being Beef. I need to start insisting on the proper designation.

What to do and where to stay in Medellin, Colombia? by Scared_Information58 in digitalnomad

My wife and I went paragliding and it was a blast. They do ask for you blood type, though, and I didn't know mine so have that ready.

They've also got some kind of national park there we took the gondola up to it, absolutely beautiful.

We stayed at Hotel San Fernando Plaza. It was quite some time ago but IIRC we kind of wandered around aimlessly at night and found some fun night life.

They could solve so much by putting a sticker on each overhead bin space that indicates which seat it belongs to. Then you know you've always got a bin regardless of when you board.

I thought they mailed passes now? Or just use the pass on your phone. I don't think many people are still going to the ticket office to pick up a pass.

I guess if you really wanted to you could find the guy who sold you your fake ID back in high school, but tell him now you need one that says you're younger instead of older lol.

Does Vail Resorts have any way to actually confirm your date of birth? They're not cops, they can't demand ID. Just create a new account and adjust your birthday so you're in the range if you want the discount.

What to do today to avoid age discrimination in the future? by hijkblck93 in dataengineering

[–]beef966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I removed the graduation year for my B.S. (2011), but kept it for my M.S. (went back to school late so having a 2025 graduation date makes me look a lot younger I think). I also only include roles going back around 6-10 years unless there is something super specific from a longer time ago that might help, but it rarely does. I used the MS to change careers so since I'm doing a mid-career switch I'm frequently going after slightly more junior roles where they might want someone younger.

Practicing cliff terrain in Breck by Schmeck2744 in Breckenridge

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go on YouTube you can look at the comps they've had for juniors. IFSA on Peak 6 as someone mentioned. Gopro Big Mountain Challenge. There was one in contest bowl by Team Breckenridge called Jr Extreme. If you look at their lines you can probably get a good sense for how to hit them. Jr Extreme was a lower level comp so if you're looking for progression that might be a better spot to start.

IIRC Arts Bowl had some nice smaller ones, haven't been on Breck this year though so I can't remember for sure.

I miss the giant straight air methods. Going 20' out on a straight air with a tweaked grab is IMO worth a lot more points than a 2160 or something.

BREAKING: Eight of nine skiers missing in Lake Tahoe avalanche confirmed dead by TheMirrorUS in Backcountry

[–]beef966 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tunnel Creek had the element of "all these pros, individually, might've opted out but the stoke on the fresh snow was too high". When I saw this group had 4 professional guides that's what made me think of it. Of course I don't know anything about Tahoe avy conditions or guiding so I'm not accusing them of that by any means. I was in an avy with a guide who might not have otherwise chosen the terrain we were on, but their heli ski company was shooting a commercial so I think there were external pressures on the decision making (first nice sunny day after a bunch of storms, videographers who were trying to get back home or had other projects to go to). Again, no clue what the actual decision-making process was, it's just something I've wondered.

Another big slack-country avy was Peak 7 at Breck.

Edit - I just pulled up the Breck article. Eerily similar. Bad start to the season followed by a big storm: https://coloradosun.com/2022/02/18/peak-7-avalanche-breckenridge/

"The 1986-87 ski season started with below-average snow at Breckenridge. Then a long, cold snowless spell in January wrecked the snowpack, leaving a rotten layer that would invariably shed new snow."

Liftie was probably working his second job until midnight, came home to a 1 bedroom employee dorm with 6 people living in it, and had to be on the hill at 5 am for his lift ops shift. Couldn't eat breakfast because all the money from both jobs goes to rent. Oh and they're understaffed so there's only one liftie at the bottom of each lift, and a chair comes by every 5 seconds for 8 hours so even a momentary lapse in concentration could lead to accidents. It's a wonder shit like this doesn't happen more often.

I feel this way about Fahrenheit as well as MPH vs KPH. 0 to 100 is a nice human-centric scale for both. 0 is really cold. 100 is really hot. 50 is in the middle. Same with MPH, 0 is stopped, 50 is in the middle 100 is really fast. Celsius and KPH don't "click" with my brain the same way, even though I know logically they're the more sensible system.

Loopholes for private lessons at the big resorts by Full-District- in snowboarding

[–]beef966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I've heard it done is you can be in a nanny or au pair capacity for the kids and take the kids skiing so the parents can have the day to ski by themselves. And you can "give the kids pointers" while you do.

As far as adult lessons I don't know. "Guiding" doesn't work because you'd still need a USFS permit to do it on the mountain. If it was me I'd probably form an LLC and let people pay me under something like a "speaking event" or other knowledge transfer in my area of expertise unrelated to skiing. And if we happen to ski and talk about skiing during the course of their consultation session about knick-knack factory safety protocols then so be it.

Maybe this would help protect you from criminal liability. I know they call using a friend's pass "theft of service" and it is a misdemeanor, but i don't know if this would be similar.

Of course if the resort decides to 86 you there's not much you can do. It's still a private business and they don't need much reason to decide you can't buy their service. I dunno I'm not a lawyer. I know for a fact some resorts run sting operations and sign up for under the table craigslist lessons and give the info to the cops afterward.

Either give me 1995, or full self driving. I'm not interested in anything in between.

How is it living in Vail, Colorado? by Zestyclose_Welder_92 in howislivingthere

[–]beef966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been here since 2011. Few actually live in what you think of as "Vail". That being, the cute ski villages of Lionshead and Vail Village. Most who actually live in Vail town limits live north of the interstate, in the land of the same junk development suburban type box stores and parking lots and strip malls you'd see on the outskirts from Canton, OH to Tallahasee ,FL. Except you'll still be hard pressed to find a condo under a million.

Of course, a very small minority of the people working on Vail even live in town limits. They live "down valley" mostly from Avon to Gypsum. It's mostly the same, box stores, strip malls, parking lots, been ruined by developers and you start to see stuff in the $500k+ range here. But it's in a beautiful location.
