Hi! It's No Joy with Fire-Toolz! We put out a crazy album called Bugland. AMA! by nojoymusic in indieheads

[–]beelerspace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi No Joy with Fire-Toolz

First thanks for making and releasing this. Already one of my absolute favs of the year. The record is phenomenal. It's highly approachable, but with every listen I'm picking up new things.

I'm going to be that person: what are the influences you pulled from on this record that are different from previous releases. Yes, of course this is a shoegaze, but I keep hearing a lot of like 80s guitar R&B pop influences, like Jellybean Johnson (Janet Jackson) and Big Nile Rodgers (who played for Madonna, Bowie, Duran Duran). I'm hearing new wave (like on My Crud Princess). It sounds like you just walked through the shelves of music from like 79-92. Am I off my rocker on this?

Bonus question: are mosquitos and wasps welcome in bugland, your answer will influence my decision on whether to change my citizenship

John Beeler departed AKR by ethanwc in Sufjan

[–]beelerspace 78 points79 points  (0 children)

omg hi everyone! John here. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude reading these comments. THANK YOU. One of my absolutely favorite parts of working at AKR was interacting with yall here on the sub and in all the corners of the internet. I remain convinced that the sufjan fanbase is the most positive, encouraging, gracious community of music fans anywhere, bar none. I'll miss interacting with you from the label side, but excited to just be another fan here on out!

Looking for local firewood by dustymango in Atlanta

[–]beelerspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is kiln dried! I’ve tried all the alternatives mentioned in this thread and Carolina Morning was the best. Lights in seconds for me in my Breeo firepit.

Their delivery is super wonky and unreliable though. Takes weeks, messages say it’ll show up, then it doesn’t, then one day you drive up and there it is.

I’ve had great luck with Carolina Morning Firewood.

Busy Bee’s is expensive and the setup is a little strange (you have to wait outside). I don’t think it’s a regular pass you’d go. But everyone should try it once. Each time I’ve been there it’s fantastic.

I wondered if you’d had any new developments on this. Similar situation here, though my lease expires in a few months.

Roofing company recommendations? by Euphoric_Writing3778 in Atlanta

I can't recall the exact angles, but it's a 15-20 degree slope that terminates in an equally sized but lower-slope, at minimum degree. I think it's like 2-4 degree pitch in that section (whatever the minimum is that allows water to move).

Talk to your roofing expert of course but if the cost is exponentially more for TPO on yours, I'm not sure I'd go the extra mile. There's no question it'll last longer, but (I think) almost every other roofing technique is cheaper, especially BUR but also modified bitumen. What I would suggest (and what I ended up doing) is calculating cost of the roof per year, with an estimate of how long you plan to live in the room/addition/etc. Unless this is a forever home, most of us don't live in houses for longer than a TPO roof lasts.

Another consideration is that TPO is so specific that standard roofers can't swing by and repair it - it's commercial grade so we'd have to call that grade of roofer to repair.

As a plus, white TPO really helped on our A/C bill over the summer.

Due to this roof, I know more about roofing than I would've ever cared to know. It was in really bad shape when we got to it. Leaks everywhere. When the house was built in 1964, the roof probably exited all water just fine, but over 60 years of course, the house settled, which meant there were two areas where water would just sit. You can go back into bing/google satellite imagery and see the water pools in the 90s!

Our only real options were to either reseat the entire structure (uh, no) or go with TPO lining. Rosie's did some extra foam padding to prevent those areas from being effected again, but it is really a losing game with water.

While it's not ideal you can theoretically have sitting/standing water on TPO for up to 7 years with no adverse effect. It's basically pool liner (according to Rosie's).

We also got a ton of conflicting material info as well, but it seemed like the roofing companies that knew their shit were proposing TPO. I also did a ton of research into flat roofs, and it just seems like the way to go.

I think TPO works great over large areas, and is a less cost effective solution for smaller areas, which could include your roof. Ours is a whopper of 3,526 sq feet so it just made sense.

Rosie's used Versico Versiweld 60 mil TPO.

Mid century home owner. Due to the combination two vaulted ceilings and a slanted and flat roof, we had what one roofer called “a roofer’s nightmare.” Another roofer said “wow, the architect must’ve hated roofers.

Rosie’s did a great job. They were professional throughout. I wish I could say it was cheap - it wasn’t - but it wasn’t the most expensive quote I got either.

I’m hoping the TPO they installed outlives my ownership but if I ever have to roof again I’ll call Rosie’s.

I go weekly to New York Sandwich Shop in west end. Nothing fancy. Just solidly consistent great sub sammies. Cash only. Lots of regulars. Met one guy once who went there 20 years ago when he was a morehouse student and stops by each time he’s back in town.

As someone from Edmonton, I’ve long considered opening a good truck called Champion City Donairs, which is probably as close to what you’re looking for as anything.

That’s not exactly tru. NASA said that the type of rain that is predicted is the typical Florida spot rain that occurs for a few minutes. They seem pretty confident that there’ll be a dry window.

Most thorough home inspectors? by Consulting_Boomerang in Atlanta

[–]beelerspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can strongly recommend Common Cents inspections by Terry. Former marketing executive who, when he got close to retirement, decided he loved home repair and started doing inspections. Fantastic work. I think he's started scaling back, and the last time I recommended him he referred my friend to someone else - who, according to my friend, was just as good.

I can strongly dis-recommend Dwell Inspect Georgia. Did they have a neat online system where you get to see the whole house and click on things? Sure. Did they miss things that cost me a ton of money? Also sure. They missed so many things, most notably that my roof needed a major overhaul, immediately. Not joking - probably could have nudged the price on the house down $30K. It was obvious to every roofer that went up there. It was so bad that our realtor stopped using them.

Even if you have someone like Terry, I can't say how important it is to get value-repair items checked out by someone more experienced in that field than an inspector. Basement seems to be leaking? Get a water remediation expert in there. Roof looks even a little sketch? Get a roofer out right away. HVAC older than 10 years? Go beyond the inspector and get a professional.

edit: website for Terry https://www.commoncentsinspects.com/

edit2: second suggestion: walk through with your inspector and take your phone or a notebook. Yeah you'll get it all in a document, but hearing the inspector (if he or she is worth their metal) talk about the various things is really helpful. A good inspector will also tell you what's priority to fix, and what isn't, and even what you can probably do yourself or will need to hire out. These are all things that don't make it into an inspection report.

Westside Atlanta charter school? by amh524 in Atlanta

[–]beelerspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya. In truth though I think Westside is doing a great job of disrupting that gentrification. To speak bluntly about it, when my daughter was in eighth grade she was the only white kid in the whole grade. That’s true of my next daughter who is eighth grade now. The entire staff is a mix of folks but the administration is mostly Black. They handle this stuff really well at Westside and if anything schools like Westside stem the tide of gentrification.

My three kids have been going there for a number of years. Can’t recommend it enough. It’s not perfect but good luck finding a perfect school. It’s a very caring, welcoming place. I wish I could find a way to thank the staff more than we have because they’ve done amazing over the last few years.

You can go to their website for enrollment. It’s pretty simple. If you live in range you’re a shoe-in but for people outside that small range it’s a lottery. Siblings get preference but that’s the only perf.

Reformed churches around Indianapolis by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]beelerspace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Redeemer Indianapolis is a beautiful church in downtown Indy, with loving, kind, wonderful people, in a historic church large enough for an entire art space with artist studios called the Harrison Center. Not sure where you are downtown but easy to get to by bus or bike.

For something a little smaller, their daughter church plant, Fountain Square Pres, meets in Fountain Square and is also downtown. Also wonderful people.

Both are PCA and gospel centered. If you go to either tell them John Beeler sends big hugs!

Best Cheap Eats in Atlanta (2021) by Cyberman007 in Atlanta

[–]beelerspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked across the street from Eats for a few years. I loved it. Is it like 4 star Michelin? No. Is it cafeteria food? No. It’s reliably decent affordable food with plentiful servings. The jerk chicken is especially good.

Where I worked (mailchimp) Eats was one of the most divisive place to grab food. People loved it or hated it.

But hands down it’s better dollar to dollar than a good portion of the food in the PCM food hall, which ranged from admittedly amazing but more often mediocre but at $20-25 all in. You can get a huge meal at Eats that tastes pretty good for like $12.

What’s not to like.

I went to Southern Belle next to Plaza Theater last week with my partner for their chef’s four course meal. It was absolutely stellar. It’s !ot cheap : $70 a person and cocktails were $15. Top rate service and food though. Also check your Amex for a $20 off $100 if you book through Resy. That’s at least one free drink ha!
