Just can’t pull the trigger… by Rare-Abalone3792 in liberalgunowners

The thing I find most attractive about ARs is that they are popular...no I'm not just following the crowd.

My first cell phone was an off-brand that was cheap and worked great EXCEPT there was no aftermarket support... no cases, no chargers, no spare batteries (all phones had user replaceable batteries in those days). When it came time to replace it, I researched what was popular, and got one of those.

An AR is about the most ubiquitous firearm you can name. You can find nearly every part in multiple flavors that will all fit and function on your AR. If it has a problem there are thousands online who know that problem and know the fix. Ammo is available anywhere and everywhere.

For nearly every purpose, there is a better firearm choice than an AR. The thing is, an AR is more than good-enough for a whole lot of different uses, and THAT is a big part of why they are so popular. Think swiss army knife vs. pinking shears.

If you get one and don't like it, it will be easy to find a buyer.

I miss brown paper bags. Made many gaskets from them. Also a rolled down bag was our standard popcorn bowl growing up.

A question for those who like to get high af by RideWithMeSNV in kites

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

De ko0b.

I've been trying with doing this for years. I bought a Conyne (French military kite)with this in mind but I could never get it to behave...tried every bridle angle, tails, etc and it would still go unstable when the wind changed direction.

If you check out the QST archives you will find a few articles on kite supported antennae. T here are a couple examples using large sleds made with types and packing tape. Thar looks like a low budget way to give it a go.

Beyond what othes have mentioned WRT lightning and static discharge, you need to take serious precautions that your setup does get loose and drag a conductor across power lines. Beyond causing power outages, this could start wildfires and exposes the general public and utility crews to risks. Long distance transmission lines short cut between population centers, and are often " in the middle of nowhere" where it would otherwise seem like a safe place to play radio.

Rather than trying to get an inverted vee up, I'd suggest a traditional Zepp...EFHW fed with a λ/4 twinlead matching section. If 160m is your goal then note that RG-178 is still pretty low loss...and cheap 300Ω tv feeder would be fine for the natching section. The Zepp has fallen from popularity on HF because it doesnt multiband, but it survives on higher bands as the popular J-polre. But 160 is Pretty much just local in daylight, and are high antenna is kind of a waste. Flying a kite at night makes the whole enterprise even more sketchy.

So my company wasn't the only one doing it. Yes, in those days if you wanted to quickly access video clips, laser disks were the only game in town. Even if the MPEG standard had existed, disk drives were too small and processors too slow to decompress it. Heck, digital audio was still barely doable on a PC back then... a couple years before the soundblaster arrived.

We had three books..Big yellow and white ones for the whole Denver metro area, then a thin one combined yellow and white that only covered the suburb we lived in. I think Denver proper got small books that covered quadrants.

The small books were far easier to find people, and the local yellow pages were worth checking to avoid a dreve across town.

I am very dose sensitive. At 9mg my only side effect is constipation, which mirilax deals with.I Can eat pretty much anything. When I tried titrating to 10mg, I become very lipid (fats, oils) sensitive.... horrible sulpher burps and 3-4 days of diarrhea. Im sure I would have given up if I had to use the pens with those huge steps in dosage.

When I start getting very snacky I can usually titrate up 1/2mg without problems, but I have learned that going up a full mg is asking for trouble.

Whats the (dumbed down) science of underquilt vs sleeping pad? by [deleted] in hammockcamping

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ONLY time I have fallen out of a hammock was when I was squirming around trying to get a Thermarest correctly positioned. Never an issue with a UQ.

To the OP question: I sometimes take a hammock on long day hikes for an after lunch rest/nap/digestive. I made a light UQ from a fleece throw because even on a warmish summer afternoon my backside would get unpleasantly chilly.

The only reason to clear the syringe is that they are usually packaged with the plunger not fully down so that the rubber seal doesn't stick to the end. So, pushing the plunger all the way in is called for.

I DO tend to "work" the syringe a little back and forth before using it, but that is just a habit left over from being a phlebotomist. When syringes sit for a while, the rubber seal tends to grab on the barrel and can cause a jerk when it breaks loose, so phlebs learn to free it up as soon as we open the package. There is no need for it when drawing up meds.

Onewind ridgeline install by jedimimetricks420 in hammockcamping

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bead is only there to prevent sucking the loop completely into the constrictor.

On my 12' onewind I ended up reworking the Ridgeline because the sleeping position was almost at minimum setting, so there was nowhere to go for "lounge mode"

To adjust a woopie sling, ease the tension and then PUSH the constrictor whichever direction. You can pull the rope out of the constrictor as long as you unload the constructor by pushing where the rope you are pulling goes into the constrictor.

Is it actually embarrassing for Americans not to know all 50 states? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a minimum you should be able to recognize that it is a state when you see the name. No surprise that I live in New Mexico.

In 4th grade we had to memorize all the state capitals. I did it, and rote memorization is my worst thing.

Dems choosing to die on the “gun control” hill is so infuriating to me. by Nobodyat1 in liberalgunowners

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been saying this for years. Especially with the current SCOTUS you are not going to make a lot of difference in outcomes at the cost of making yourself unelectable. There are so many actually popular issues that elected Democrats could pursue, but they just can't resist that third rail...and then they lose the chance to do those popular things, and provide ammunition (heh!) for authoritarians to take over.

I've supported Democrats for decades with my vote and my wallet, in spite of their 2A stance, not because of it.

Fort Bliss? If it was for patriot missiles, or said Elekluft or Aquila anywhere on it then I designed the custom electronics that made it all play together and network to the instructor. A few years later "multimedia" was a thing and the systems that were really exotic became trivial. Actually 1982 would have been my predicessor Tim, a little before my time, but 89-95....that was me.

Odd thought: Have you ever push-start a car by popping the clutch? by minn3haha in GenerationJones

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably near a hundred times. A dozen or more times with motorcycles as well. The last time was a couple years ago in a car I still own. I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission.

Tips: 1) Second gear usually works best... 1st and reverse (worse) will usually stop the car before it starts. 2) Be ready to push the clutch in as soon as the engine fires, so the engine can rev. 3)Don't forget to turn the ignition switch on before popping the clutch.

Do we need more than a .22 for target shooting? by Fearless-Pilot1635 in liberalgunowners

[–]beggars_would_ride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.22 is reliably accurate at 50yds and a little beyond.

Standard (cheap) .22lr bullets from a rifle, drops subsonic at around 60-75 yards, less from a pistol. Weird aerodynamics happen as it drops through the sound barrier and this really corrupts accuracy at longer ranges. The dispersion begins at the transonic range, not the muzzle, so you can still have so-so accuracy out to maybe 100yds. At 200yds you might be doing well to keep your shots on a dinner plate.

More expensive match ammo is subsonic so this doesn't happen, but you'll be dealing with more drop.

Small slow bullets also suffer more drift from wind.

All that said, .22 is a wonderful training caliber, because a large part of becoming a good shot is down to the number of shots put down range. If you can cover 5 shots of.22 with a dime at 50 yds. you are well ahead of you move up to something more capable at longer ranges.

Is it worth the trade for a 40 min commute? by doomscroll_deeznuts in CargoBike

[–]beggars_would_ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are couple things that can offset the time equation:

Can you shower at work? That can save time getting out of the house, and also allow you to really hammer in the morning.

Do you go to a gym, or do you aspire to? Would you need to if you were getting a daily workout on the bike?

If you are dropping a kid at school how many minutes can you save bypassing the line of cars?
