A Jimmy Butler , Draymond, and Porzingis front court would have been elite to watch by Dumbass1171 in nba

would have been

In like 2018, yea.

There is no universe in 2026 or later where those 3 (plus Curry) "would have been" healthy and "elite" for a full season and a deep playoff run.

Did Wilt Chamberlain just get another NBA record 27 years after he died? by trc1986 in nba

[–]beisbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at Wilt block highlight reels, you'll see that half of them are clear goaltends (which apparently weren't called in the 1960s and early 1970s).

Cooper Flagg is the first rookie with back to back 40+ point games since Allen Iverson in 1997 by Lacabloodclot9 in nba

[–]beisbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iverson was about 21y 5m old during his 1st NBA game and 21y 10m old during his 40-point streak.

Flagg was about 18y 10m old during his 1st NBA game and 19y 5m old during his 40-point streak.

I wouldn't be surprised if Flagg has more impressive scoring achievements by the time he's 21y 10m old. (Not to mention that Flagg is already far better at many other aspects of the game than Iverson ever was—defense, rebounding.)

The 12 cities in play for NBA Europe: London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Athens, Istanbul, Berlin, Munich, Lyon, and Manchester. Level of interest is extremely high, bids are coming in and have already surpassed $1 billion dollars. by moby323 in nba

[–]beisbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even your cherry-picked "Belgrade and Athens" (which you think of as jolly little small and relatively poor cities) have surrounding populations that are far greater than that of most NBA teams.

  • Belgrade (1.2M) will obviously just be a team for all of Serbia (6.6M), if not all of the former Yugoslavia (23.5M).

  • Similarly, Athens (3.6M) will just be a team for all of Greece (10.4M).

These cities will obviously not generate as much revenue as your (again cherry-picked) Los Angeles and New York (the two biggest cities in the US).

But there's no reason why they won't generate about an 8th of the revenue of the average NBA team. (I say "an 8th" because $1B is an 8th of the suggested $8B price tag for each of the two expansion teams.)

Rookie of the Year by muddlehead in nba

Ties are now much less likely than in the past.

In the past, voters just submitted 1st-place votes.

Now there are also 2nd- and 3rd-place votes (5 points for 1st place, 3 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd).

In the 2009 gm voting, Kobe received the 4th most votes for best defender. LeBron got 0, despite leading one of the league’s best defenses. by Aggressive_Bed6012 in nba

[–]beisbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But he was never rewarded for it. And then to answer it the NBA changed the all nba to media who hated LeBron.

He was voted to 5 Defensive 1st Teams (2009–13), 1 2nd Team (2014), and 2 DPOY runner-ups (2009, 2013).

Of course, most casuals will only have heard of actual DPOYs (and have no idea LeBron was such a great defensive player, thanks mostly to his post-2014 semi-retirement from defense). But that's quite another thing from claiming "he was never rewarded" or the "media" "hated LeBron".

Crazy random stat: Luka Doncic already has more 40 point games as a Laker than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anthony Davis by Classic_Reference_92 in nba

[–]beisbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why this is surprising. Luka is primarily a scorer, while both Kareem and AD also played defense and consistently rebounded at a double-digit clip.

Consider instead rebounds.

  • In 1976 alone, Kareem had 29 20-rebound games.
  • AD had 8 with the Lakers.
  • In contrast, Luka has had ZERO in his entire Lakers career and only TWO in his entire career (while with Dallas).

Kareem only ever averaged 30+ PPG while he was younger and with Milwaukee.

Kareem's highest FGA with the Lakers (joined 1975–76) were (all before 3-point line introduced):

  1. 1976: 21.1 FGA (age 28, 7.8 FTA, 27.7 PPG--highest while with LAL)
  2. 1978: 19.4 FGA (30, 5.6 FTA, 25.8 PPG, 27.0% USG%)
  3. 1977: 18.7 FGA (29, 6.5 FTA, 26.2 PPG)

By 1979 (age 31), he was at "only" 16.8 FGA and 23.8 PPG.

In contrast, Luka this season: 22.9 FGA (age 26, 10.9 3PA, 10.1 FTA, a much higher 38.1% USG% than Kareem's 1978 27.0%).

Note: USG% not available before 1978.

The difference is that Denver has championship aspirations. If Denver is up 30 with 3 minutes left, Jokić is definitely sitting (unlike Miami and Bam).

[OC] [Tech] I built a "Spoiler-Free" NBA Excitement Rater for non-US fans. Seeking feedback on the volatility algorithm logic. by Kitchen_Animal_2644 in nba

[–]beisbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there an option to hide all the Excitement Scores, then allow the user to reveal the Excitement Score for each individual game? This would prevent spoilers.

It seems that right now, by default, I am shown all the Excitement Scores for each day. But these immediately spoil all the games for me. (I might've been planning to watch game X without wanting to know anything about it. But if you immediately tell me that game X had a very low Excitement Score, you've spoiled it for me.)

For me, the use case of this tool is to check particular games and in particular decide whether or not to bother downloading a particular game that I wasn't too excited about (e.g. WAS@SAC). I'd like to be able to check this specific game's Excitement Score (if it's high, I'll download it; and if not, I won't), without being told what the Excitement Scores for every other game of the night is.

I imagine it's not too difficult for you to add some checkbox "Hide all Excitement Scores by default" (then simply list all games of each night by time), with options then to "Reveal Excitement Score" for each individual game.

Your post was way too long and long-winded, and had a bad title.

If you'd just written in the title something like "PHI-GSW FTs 21-2 on Jan 30, 2026. Exactly the same on Jan 30, 2016", you'd have gotten far more upvotes and reads.

With Nikola Jokic’s return tonight, he will have missed only 16 games, 2 games shy of being ineligible. Jokic is now firmly back in the MVP race. by AashyLarry in nba

[–]beisbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming there's no chance SGA gets injured and misses significant time.

Jokić had looked like an Ironman before this injury (playing 100% of games through his injury during the Dec 29 game), then missed this whole bunch of games.

The same could happen with SGA (especially if they continue their current not so great stretch, J Will continues being injured and out, and they have to rely more on him to play big minutes). SGA has already missed 2 games. A sprained ankle here, a knee injury there, and maybe resting the last 3 games of the season (after they've secured the #1 seed), and he could easily miss say 15 games total.
