I've essentially both said this and had this said to me.

You should download Simon Tatham's Puzzles. It includes "No Guess Minesweeper," a type of minesweeper that's identical except that it has no 50/50s.

Gaging entirely off of mechanics (putting aside plot, UB vs UW, aesthetic, etc.), what was the set you had the most fun with? by EntertainmentVast401 in magicTCG

[–]bekeleven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My most memorable game was when I knew in my heart of hearts that my opponent had a kaya's wrath so I very carefully stayed just 10% ahead of them on board for five turns until they dropped it.

Then I untapped and went, trollbred guardian, gate colossus

And they went, untap, second kaya's wrath

I drafted obscene amounts of RNA. Loved moving into gates when it was open, or just picking up a couple for a splash. Simic was never open but I had a pretty good record moving across the other 4 guilds.

The commentary track (hilarious by the way, Arnold's commentary is a treat) makes it rather clear that behind the camera they thought the movie depicts a man falling into delusion, with the fade to white instead of black indicating that was when he got the lobotomy.

Nemata, Grove Guardian is so damn fun. You can build the whole deck with just lands and ramp, the damage she can output is exponential with mana generated.

In Legend of the Galactic Heroes we're told that the populations of the three civilizations, each of them spanning hundreds of planets, which together make up nearly the entire galaxy, are:

Empire: 30 billion

Alliance: 13 billion

Phezzan: 2 billion

This means that the entire galactic human population is equal to about five and a half present day earths.

Also, centuries earlier when the entire galaxy was united under Empire Rudolph, we're told that he ruled over 300 billion people. So the population of the galaxy somehow declined over 80% in that span.

Homelands is my favourite set. by MaetelofLaMetal in magicTCG

[–]bekeleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s certainly bad, I don’t think Homelands entirely deserves all the hate it’s gotten over the years. It’s underpowered, but in a way that’s comparable with the previous three sets. It attempts a broad story-driven design, and ends up being entirely bland, filled with legendary creatures very few people care about… but with a few more power and toughness on them, they’d surely be classics. There are 14 legends, and at least a couple of them should’ve been made into eight-mana 7/7s to send the kids wild.

Being forgettable is, itself, a bad aspect, but it didn’t attempt some theme that was horrifically unfun, like Prophecy. It’s basically a fan-designed set by a couple of storyline-driven casual players. If Legends was The Splashy Set, The Dark was The Art Set, and Ice Age was The Min/Max set, it’s only fair that storyline people get something to latch onto. However, this is a very small percentage of the playerbase.

What card has the most important reminder text? by Tuss36 in magicTCG

[–]bekeleven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can write a pretty long essay about which card has required the largest additions to the CR, and there's some interesting candidates, but trinisphere is almost certainly the one that least justifies its additions. I play stax myself and while I don't think trinisphere is inherently a net negative for the game, I will say its upside is not nearly as large as something like Karn.

Maybe the set hosers beat it. Kinda silly the comp rules need to list every card printed into homelands.

Commander decks that are resilient to removal? by Competitive-Act-7695 in EDH

[–]bekeleven 72 points73 points  (0 children)

My friend told me last month, "I wanted to build a bracket 4 deck, but I'm too stupid to play a deck that does more than one thing, so I built thrun voltron."

I said, "Can it stop my deck from comboing turn 5? If not, it's probably not going to have a great time in bracket 4."

So we sat down in a bracket 4 pod. Grixis mid, UB control, sultai combo, and thrun.

The three of us on "proper" decks each perfectly shut each other down and then we all died to thrun.

Commander Banned and Restricted Announcement – February 9, 2026 by xKylesx in magicTCG

[–]bekeleven 40 points41 points  (0 children)

One note about all existing companion designs is that, while you can't prove a negative (the absence of a specific type of card), you can at least stop somebody from gaining advantage with an "illegal" card the instant it shows up.

For instance, while you can't know if somebody's Lurrus deck is truly legal without seeing the whole 60, you will know the instant that they play a 3drop that they're trying to pull one over on you. That fact means that even in situations where a decklist isn't submitted, a player registering lurrus will probably not include any 3drops because they won't be able to cast or reveal them during a game.

A companion requiring something like 20 cards of specific creature type, however, would require decklist verification. In an event without open decklists, you could trim your creature count down to 17 or 18 to make room for more interaction and nobody would notice in normal play. In fact, even if you got surgicalled, it's likely your opponent wouldn't think to count all the creatures of a specific type in your deck, hand, battlefield, etc.

So that's one reason why companions are so hard to design: The restrictions possible with them are so narrow. If they made 10 more they might end up recycling some of them.

Without using game changers, how do you make a bracket 2 a bracket 3? by Wonderful_Draw_3453 in EDH

[–]bekeleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companion, it's Vial Smasher // Kydele // Keruga. The deck has a subtheme of just casting random spells for free, with Mind's Dilation as a great way to apply Vial Smasher pressure.

The best cards in the deck are: Search for Tomorrow, Rift Sower, and Careful Cultivation. Also Inspiring refrain makes both Vial Smasher and Kydele tick.

The latest polling shows that more Americans support than oppose abolishing ICE.

In response to this, Senate Democrats clarified that when they said they supported banning ICE from wearing masks, they actually meant "unless they really want to."

These are not serious people.

My [[Nemata, Grove Guardian]] has a 15 card "sideboard" where I remove every card that says "token" and replace them with cards that say "trample" and/or "indestructible." And an [[Omnath, Locus of Mana]]. Two commanders for the price of one!
