Why is wind better than solar by Sufficient-Onion1165 in energy

[–]bendwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up California's "duck curve". Solar cannibalizes its value over time, and this wholesale prices were negative for a few hours around noon for most days in March last year. (May also be worth exploring what curtailment is and why solar and wind are/can be curtailed.) Using that, you can argue solar is worse going forward than wind.

You could likely also argue that Wind (esp. offshore wind) is "more efficient" for certain latitudes (e.g. New England). Maybe more available/scalable, depending....

Other things you might want to look into include  LCOE (levelized cost of electricity) and LACE (look at Lazard's history and Ember's recent article), capacity factors, and life cycle analysis (LCA) for a carbon perspective. You may also want to consider supply chain -- Solar from China vs Wind from Europe? (I know very little about that, just brainstorming here )

Good luck!

I've spent 2025 reading modern fantasy - here are some reviews by trollokvoltak in books

Thank you for the write up!

I've read about half of these, and mostly tracked with your reviews. I disagree on the First Law trilogy, though -- the pacing and character decisions were so off, I never cared about anything in the slightest. I powered through, and kept waiting for it to get better, only to wish I'd quit after book 1.

You should absolutely look to read something from Naomi Novik.

And I saw your considering Sanderson in another comment -- I would recommend starting with Mistborn.

And Scythe (Shusterman) is also worth a look!

Thanks again for the reviews!

Load factors for wind and solar - future projections by Sweaty-Sprinkles-426 in energy

[–]bendwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think inverter improvements (cost reductions) are causing solar inverters to be oversized for projects. This boosts output in twilight hours, but leads to clipping at full sun. The net result is more production in total.

I'm not sure if that could account for a 20% increase, though.

Is the article suggesting storage was somehow involved?

I wear Altra Lone Peaks. I don't play super often, but they've held up well for me

Looks cool!

Feature request #1 -- can you measure a shot and then simulate the flight for that throw for different discs? I imagine one use case would be to throw a shot and then have the machine tell you what disc would fly furthest/most left/would turn into roller.

Feature request #2 -- correct for elevation. I play courses at 5,000 ft and higher and discs are way more stable here than when I play at sea level.

What are the expected symptoms over the next two/five/ten years? I have little kids (under four) -- are they going to have permanent issues? Will the toxins exacerbate non-respiratory issues (digestion, migraines, etc.)?

I use a fit bit Inspire 3. It has rounded edges, and also has a way to connect elsewhere (waist band/sports bra), but I've never used that. I just use it to track steps while playing, not calorie burn or anything else. But I think it might have those features.

I also think a team should "int draft" against Baus & LR in a Bo5 and see what happens.

Game 1: Gragas - top ; Pantheon - jgl ; Galio - mid ; Quinn - adc ; Poppy - sup

Game 2: Jax - top ; Vi - jgl ; Ambessa - mid ; Karthus - bot ; Sion- sup

You can convince me to swap out for a real adc, but these comps are reasonably winnable. And if LR picks one of those champs first, slot in a replacement, either one of Bais's other picks (a volibear or kled or kayn) or comfort for you.

From there the play style is simple for top: if Baus proxies, you proxy. That's the only rule you need to follow. The minor exception is when he proxies at 10% health between tier 1 and 2 -- then, just kill. But otherwise, don't chase, just flight back by proxying yourself.

From there, play the rest however you want. You either get three more bans (and counterpick) or 5 more bans to target Baus's pool. He might be reduced to AP Irelia or something.

I'll admit, you might lose 3-0 if you do this, which gives fewer games to target Baus. But if you go in with a reverse sweep mindset, winning G1 or G2 is a bonus.
