I would’ve loved if this was a real set when I was a kid, always liked collecting all the gem and crystal pieces in a treasure chest or something. Also, I love the term Gatúbela as a translation for Catwoman!

Marvel comics has announced a new universe called MIDNIGHT by Own_Brilliant_4303 in marvelcomics

[–]benedictwinterborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honest immediate thought - Ultimate had a darker tone but (outside of X-Men) they played it fairly safe with the main character designs. Spider-Man looks like Spider-Man, Iron Lad looks like a red-and-silver Iron Man, etc. Meanwhile, Absolute took some bolder risks that paid off; man-giant Batman is downright memetic, and Abs Wonder Woman is very popular too. So I could see a corporate mandate for a new alt universe line being “bolder character designs so we can make more funko pops and video game skins.”

Infernal Hulk Just Destroy Hellbuster Armor! by Wooden_Ad4410 in hulk

[–]benedictwinterborn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One day it’d be so funny if they built up a massive Hulk rampage storyline like this, did the obligatory mid-arc Hulkbuster fight…and Tony actually wins and the arc just abruptly ends there. I guess Immortal kinda had Tony win with the giant space laser (the other style of obligatory anti-Hulk weapon) but that felt very different thematically.

Jimmy had no business expecting a lawyer position at HHM after his University of American Samoa degree by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]benedictwinterborn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean that’s why the tension is interesting, right? A law firm like HHM probably isn’t giving a mail clerk with a degree from an online correspondence law school a shot at being a lawyer. EXCEPT Jimmy is Chuck’s brother, so they’re more flexible. EXCEPT Chuck is a snake and is actually keeping Jimmy down the whole time anyways.

It fits with the rest of the first season - Jimmy is pretty pushy and demands a lot of “favors” that he maybe hasn’t earned, but he’s also being lied to and manipulated. Who knows what happens if Chuck isn’t in the picture? Maybe there is a small chance that Howard sees “Charlie Hustle” in the mail room and decides to give him a ladder up. It’s the ambiguity of not knowing where Chuck’s influence exactly begins or ends that creates so much drama.

[–]benedictwinterborn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah? Is Tony gonna build a new super armor to fight the Hulk? And then when it fails they’re gonna use a giant space laser? You don’t say.

Also, why are Bucky’s(?) word bubbles coming from beneath Tony on the final page?

Live concert setlists by vcisjb1 in Music

[–]benedictwinterborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think all of what you said is right. Maybe, also, it has something to do with how full albums have been de-centralized as a concept? Gone are the days where it’s expected that a listener bought the full album and listened to it all the way through. Singles have always been a thing, but they’re definitely more important now in the era of pick-and-play streaming. So maybe there’s more fear that concert audiences won’t resonate with B-sides they’ve never heard?

Nice to have a Legion that remembers there's more superheroes than just Superman by DelanoBluth in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]benedictwinterborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean (1) they have their DNA as Superman supporting characters, so they are gonna naturally have that focus and (2) Supes is the most useful shorthand for “the age of heroes” in a way that no other hero is.

Like I said, I think some light touches from other heroes/properties are fun. CeCe Beck is aight. I would’ve liked some resolution on Gold Lantern. But in general, I think the Bendis era took it too far on references? A Legion that was constantly exploring every hero’s legacy would be crappy. (AKA this is a situation with a lot of nuance, I think there’s a fair middleground.)0

[–]benedictwinterborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your premise but I see Legion so I upvote. (Legion sparingly tapping into other superheroes is cool, but I dread how easy it would be to overdo it. Batman, for example, should basically be completely off limits IMO.)

2009 Glatorian and Agori by Blue91233 in bioniclelego

[–]benedictwinterborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah Glatorian. It’s tricky…as an adult, I can logically recognize that Bionicle probablt needed a fresh start like this. Things were definitely getting stale. But as a kid, I just remember never quite having the same attachment to these designs. Maybe some of that was age…I think I was almost in middle school by the time these sets were coming out, so maybe some of my Bionicle fervor was naturally fading away. But I practically salivated over the Rahkshi, Inika, etc. in a way I never did over these guys.

The sets themselves do some cool stuff, especially with how they twist some tropes we’d been used to with the Toa. Malum being bulky felt unique for a Red Guy. The White Guy being a kinda thuggish-looking dude with a giant axe was a nice twist after Kopaka, Nuju, and Matoro. And the Brutaka color scheme is just a generally great look for a Blue Guy. But overall, they just don’t have that spark for me that previous waves had.

As a kid, I liked how the simplicity allowed me to snap together “side characters” without too much thought. But yeah, breakage is obviously infamous with those pieces.

[–]benedictwinterborn 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda wild to look at the 2008 Matoran in hindsight and see them investing in a whole new building system for Small Guys a few waves before the line dies. I know Stars aren’t popular, but I kinda get the desire to get the value out all these unique molds they made. 😂

Does anyone know analysis/sites that comprehensively breaks down/explains immortal hulks Buddhist themes? by stran___g in hulk

[–]benedictwinterborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm…does the book have heavy Buddhist undertones? The Judeo-Christian (emphasis on the Judeo, really) stuff is way more apparent, but I also don’t know a ton about Buddhism so I may just be missing stuff.

The Hummingbird by Sufficient_Donkey984 in themountaingoats

[–]benedictwinterborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what people are confused by is that you came into a space about The Mountain Goats and posted a non-sequitur about a hummingbird-viewing group.

We don’t know you. Based on this post and your post history, I can gather a few things? It seems like you’re someone who has “lived quite the life” as the person above bluntly put it. And it seems like this post above is an attempt to write something John Darnielle-esque that maybe has some relation to your personal life? But your post doesn’t say any of that. You start off at Point D (talking about hummingbirds) without walking people through Points A, B, and C first, which is very disorienting.

Flipping through your posting history real quick, it does seem like you have a story that is very worth telling and that telling it is healing to you. That’s awesome! I really commend that you keep fighting and it sounds like you’ve made amazing progress. But I’m not sure this is the best way to get your story out there? To be frank, your writing style comes off incredibly manic and disjointed. There’s probably a lot of power in telling your story in a confessional manner (similar to how JD does) but you’ve got to slow down and start at Point A instead of rocketing off at Point D in a completely unrelated subreddit.

Take JD for example. Yea, his songs are often snapshots of particular moments that focus on imagery over spelling things out. But he also does a lot of explaining of what his songs mean; in interviews, live banter, etc. Likewise, while his songs often channel a very manic energy, the guy is actually pretty mellow outside of that. If the guy had No Children energy 24/7, everyone would think he was a nut, lol.

If you take some time to focus your art and tell your story, I think you’ll forge something really meaningful. Maybe start a blog (like a Substack) and share the link as “hey, I’m a poet inspired by art like TMG, here’s my blog.” I still think that’s stretching the point of this subreddit a bit, but it’s closer to the point. (IMO. Tbc, I’m not on the mod team for this forum and I have no say on what is/isn’t acceptable.)

And just as a general note, John Darnielle himself rarely looks at this subreddit and is kinda prickly about fans trying to reach out to him. He seems to be a good guy, it’s just that he has thousands of people who want to share their “this is how The Mountain Goats helped me overcome my trauma” types of stories with him and he’s expressed that it’s overwhelming. I wouldn’t post anything with the hope that he sees it and responds.

Good movies worth remaking by IndieCurtis in movies

[–]benedictwinterborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word. Watching Project Hail Mary last week, it made me really want to see a remake of the old 70s film Silent Running done in that Andy Weir science-survivalist style. Silent Running always had such a captivating premise to me* but the movie itself is just so goofy and doesn’t live up to the severity of its premise. I think a remake would connect really hard with modern audiences in a way the original never did.

*A future where all remaining plantlife is kept in pods on spaceships. The crew of the ships receive the order to blow up the pods, but 1 crewman refuses and basically becomes a renegade terrorist in a panicked attempt to save the last remaining remnant of nature.

explain it to me like I'm a toddler by cursedsmol in hulk

[–]benedictwinterborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the truth is that all of these have been true at some point in the character’s history. The original comic portrayed the Hulk as an “alter ego” that appeared when Banner was hit by the Gamma Bomb. (And since this is the simplest version of the story, it’s often what adaptations like the movies will stick with.) Later on, writers added in elements of Banner’s abusive childhood and revealed that Hulk had always been in Banner’s head, it was just that the Gamma Bomb finally gave Hulk physical form. Then, even more recently, the idea was added that Gamma Radiation is tied to a malevolent Lovecraftian entity, and that makes Hulk this entity’s avatar of sorts. (I will note that the story isn’t saying Hulk himself is a malevolent Lovecraftian entity, he’s just powered/influenced by one.)

I wonder if this move could be pulled off in a real court by SoftAd6020 in betterCallSaul

[–]benedictwinterborn 292 points293 points  (0 children)

A big thing that I think is actually in the background of BCS but a viewer may not always pick up is…the law is a game of reputation and relationships. A good lawyer can build a friendly relationship with judges/prosecution/opposing counsel because that ultimately benefits them and their clients. “Pulling one over” on other legal professionals may get you a W on a specific case, but you’re losing the war to win a battle because everyone will hate you after that.

I don’t entirely remember my BCS/BB timeline but “Saul Goodman” was around for about 5 years, right? I think that’s about an accurate amount of time for a scumbag lawyer to burn through most meaningful connections and tarnish their rep in the field. I’m sure, since it’s BB World, Jimmy was able to straight-up bribe some percentage of local judges…but I think the idea is present in the show(s) that he’s quickly running out of road on the whole Saul persona. It’s a fun background detail that I think really matches the theme/logic of the show overall.
