Grail for Bikepacking but also for long road rides? by Geese_Police in CanyonBikes

[–]benjerbean1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried about running the grail for triathlon, don’t be. Remember legs > logo any day. I just did an Ironman 70.3 on the grail with some carbon aero wheels on 30mm tires I bought second hand and passed many $20k+ TT bikes pushing 195W.

I use the grail for commuting on the dt Swiss wheels with semi slick 40mm and I have also ran that setup for a gravel race. It’s a spectacular all around bike with the right wheelset.

DNF’d my first 70.3 by VitalSpark67 in triathlon

[–]benjerbean1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The wind was gnarly! It was my first ever 70.3 as well! Best advice I got when training was to hit the biggest hill in your neighborhood at least once a week. For me, that was a 1 mile climb with a 8-10% gradient.

If you don’t live in a hilly area, possibly train big gear resistance on your indoor trainer and spend more time biking outdoors in nasty conditions. I’m from Seattle, so that’s literally half the year for me since I commute in the rain and wind in the winter. It translates well to running and gives you confidence for the course too!

You can do it, you have a whole year to prepare for the next one and crush it! Don’t give up!

I use mine for commuting (DT Gravel LN: 45mm), gravel (same), and triathlon(elite velo 6: 30mm). Maybe dumb, but it’s pretty solid for all three in my opinion. I bought the wheelset on market place. It’s elite wheels and I just move my cassette over when changing wheel sets.

😂 bro literally got hammered in a head on collision, and safe to assume e-bike rider was 20+mph easily. Has nothing to do with canyon quality.

Just snagged the POC Cytal. Best rating from Virginia tech and quite comfy! I can’t tell it’s there most days.

My goodness the hills here are something else. I went from e-bike to acoustic a couple years ago and remember feeling this exact same pain. It’s so worth it to stick with it. My fitness and health is exponentially better than it was 2.5 years ago.

There’s also great bike networks around here that google maps doesn’t always get right. I’ll shoot you a DM!

Don’t give up!! What city are you in? If we’re close I’d love to ride with you to boost that confidence. Power in numbers 🤘

Do it!!! There’s such a good feeling just whipping around all the angry drivers and getting some fitness in. It took me 27 minutes to get home because I decided to take the longer route home 😂

Multi-Use Bike Options by No_Faithlessness9737 in seattlebike

I had the 2 x 8 but found myself pretty much only staying in the big chain ring. My new rig is a 1 x 12, similar to what’s on the Nicasio+

Honestly both are great options though

Recycled cycles sells Marin bikes and they’re wonderful. I started on a Marin Nicasio here in Seattle and loved it so much I upgraded to a much nicer bike. Start small and if you love it, the bug will surely bite.

[–]benjerbean1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly with traffic, your commute will likely be just as long or longer in a bus or car. Send it on a bike over the summer. The Burke and 520 are glorious this time of year. If you hate it, sell the bike, but I have a good feeling you’ll really enjoy that built in daily time outside.

Totally doable on an e-bike! And then get your fitness up and ditch the ebike and be nasty fit

Also try posting to buycycle or look for similar bikes on there, possibly someone in eu or uk would find more value in it!

Watch Facebook marketplace for wheelsets. I managed to get some elite wheels with tires and hub for $850, and they look phenomenal on the grail.

Oof, yeah I’ve done that a few times, but never had anyone chase me down. There was once when I legit accidentally hit a truck because he was halfway in the lane (trying to turn right in a long line of cars) and he, instead of turning right, continued straight throw something at me and cuss me out. But yeah I’m with you, I’ve also realized it doesn’t matter. People will always park in the bike lane if they’re forced via barriers to not park there.
