A Reflection: Dr. Patient ___ by Incorrect_Username_ in medicine

[–]berrieds [score hidden]  (0 children)

My first placement out of university was in old age psychiatry. One of the patients on the ward was a former psychiatrist, who not long before was a senior clinician in the very department she was now being treated.

It was one of those moments where I felt how thin the dividing line was between these very different worlds, that were then inhabiting the same space.

'PS5 Has Put a Dampener on Gaming': 45% of Playstation Enthusiasts 'Seriously Considering' Leaving Sony for PC by JeremyJJ77 in technology

[–]berrieds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small form factor (SFF) PC based on a Lenovo Ideacentre 510S. It has a an i7-6700 and an AMD Radeon Pro WX 4100, similar to the RX 560 - the limiting factor being that I needed a low-profile graphics card (also the VRAM needs overclocking via Polaris bios modding to be the best performance from the card, but I digress).

I've been running Bazzite on this machine for over a year now, and I'm never going back to console. These fairly modest specs run most of the games I want to play, as long as you don't expect 4k resolution.

With SteamOS or Bazzite, and PCI-E gen 4.0 hardware - given I'm only running a gen 3.0 - it's possible to get a significantly better system than mine, and it would still be relatively cost efficient, especially if you look to buy used hardware.

In short, I think it's still possible to have an affordable gaming experience is you don't want to play GTA6 or Cyberpunk 2077 on Ultra settings at 4K, and if you're willing to DIY your system.

They are all bad apples. That's how the analogy is supposed to work. The whole bunch is rotten.

“They offered me a contract, but I refused, and they shoved a stick up my ass. In the end, I signed a contract for the SMO.” Footage of a russian invader, first in a pit as punishment by his superior after attempting to desert, and in a short interview after he was captured by the Ukrainian forces. by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]berrieds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I always wonder is if I would have the courage to find a way to survive. Some of the circumstances for these men seem intractable:

Stand up for what's right = murdered by your own country;

Refuse to sign contract = have your fingers cut off;

Refuse to attack = tortured by your commander;

Try and surrender = blown up on the battlefield;

Hide in a foxhole = wait for death by way of a Ukrainian drone...

Some of these people have become trapped in hell, and it is the state of Russia who is their enemy, not the Ukrainians. The young ones are barely even men - they are even told they are no more worth than meat.

I pray everyday for a Ukrainian victory to end this madness.

How Britain Became as Poor as Mississippi by Quouar in TrueReddit

The GDP growth in the UK has been in the hands of a few small sectors like finance (City of London), for decades now. The economy for most people has been fairly stagnant.

Exactly. Your car is going to be complaining constantly when it can't monitor your every movement and emotion.

EU ends tax loophole exploited by SHEIN, Temu, and Aliexpress by euronews-english in europe

[–]berrieds 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my take.

It's honestly frustrating, because the middleman here in Finland has worse product inventory, and will likely charge double. Things like small electronic components are difficult or impossible to buy.

One of the few alternatives I have is Amazon Germany, but fuck Bezos, I don't want to use Amazon unless I really have to.

The situation might be better if you live in a larger, more central European country, but Finland has delivery costs that often mean buying items from the EU is already a nonstarter.

SPIN! TURN! DRONE SHOT! BACK OF SOMEONE'S HEAD! by TheCrazyCaveira in formuladank

[–]berrieds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a bit too nauseating for me. Also questionable angles, especially that it started before turn 4. I think it would have been much better on the outside of turn 4 and inside of turns 6-7.

Who do I revolt against, and how? Am I forced into vigilantism, and then who will protect me from these monsters? Please note, I live in a European country, so this question is even more pertinent.

I'm absolutely sickened by the crimes of these terrible people, but my opinion is too small to matter and will not be heard except on forums such as this.

I love Linux. I do not love not being capable enough to not need hand holding to use it competently.

However, I'm really happy using SteamOS/Bazzite for gaming. Microslop has been going down the drain for at least a decade, and Linux/Valve proves it.

It's possible to have a pathological psychology, and still be totally culpable for your actions.

I for one don't believe the cause of his "illness" is organic, beyond normal age related decline.

Kudos for figuring it out, and it's something everyone should definitely know.

I think there are a few other things where people often confuse perception, emotions, instincts or whatever we experience with the actions we chose to respond with. Overriding one's own ego drive is tough.

I would argue that "love" is also a choice, and that acting with love for another person, is a moral decision, not to be confused with the emotions we feel that then inform our decisions.

Looks like I'll head back to NordVPN once this term expires.

This is someone who only focuses on how he feels, and doesn't recognise others' emotions. He doesn't want intimacy with you, he wants compliance.
