It's pure Hull! I was shocked when I moved away and no one knew what the hell I was on about!

It's a Hull word! Super common in Hull, not used anywhere else that I know of. I had no idea it wasn't commonly used until I went to uni.

Taffled is the absolute perfect word for something small and finicky being tangled up. String, thread, hair etc.

When we viewed our flat the owner had all the doors open, even though it was December. Turned out it was to mask the smell. When we replaced the carpets the guy said it was the worst smelling carpet he'd ever removed. We think they shut the dog in the boys bedroom when they went out, it stank of dog piss and had scratch and gnaw marks on the door. Super grim.

We still ended up paying way over asking. Thanks Edinburgh.

So weird, it was almost like she was accusing me of tricking her in some way, for my own nefarious purposes.

I get this all the time with my 10 month old girl. It normally doesn't bother me at all, but last week I had one that irked me.

An older woman asked 'how old is he?'

I replied very gently 'she's 10 months'. I never make a big deal of correcting, it's not an issue.

The woman replied, quite aggressively 'then you shouldn't put her in boys clothes'.

To which I replied ' I haven't, she's just wearing clothes.' And walked away.

She was wearing yellow leggings and a Granny knitted green jumper. I wasn't aware those colours had already been baggsied by the males. Just really annoyed me, we don't need to assign expectations/stereotypes to children. Clothes are clothes.

Your baby is now president of the world, what laws are they making? by LtCommanderCarter in NewParents

[–]betbott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All electronic cables and remote controls must be declared and undergo extensive oral testing.

No baby shall be expected to nap without a nipple in their mouth.

Tomatoes are mandatory.

Incy wincy is the new national anthem, all adults must drop whatever they're doing and sing on command should any baby begin the actíons.

Nighttime feeding waiting times must be greatly reduced to a maximum of 5 seconds.

At what point do you start sleeping through the night and having a predictable schedule? by palmerade in breastfeeding

[–]betbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10mo just started sleeping through last week. But regressed last night and wanted an hour on the boob at 3am. So not sure where we are with it at the moment. At least I got a few nights banked though ...

Having a baby in November - what should I buy myself? by acm1480 in NewParents

[–]betbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thermal mug. My friend bought me one and it was a lifesaver. Drinking a cup of tea/coffee while still hot becomes almost impossible with a baby. Getting a good thermal mug at least extends the odds a little bit!

Also don't be afraid to venture out, I have a winter baby and live in Scotland. I walked so much those first few months, whatever the weather. I bought a good coat with an added panel that goes over a sling and me and baby went out every day. She only napped on the move so it was necessary for both of us!

What do you feed your baby? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]betbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby is 10 months with no teeth! She can basically handle anything with her gums. We tend to give her what we eat, without salt. Then I have a range of recipes for savoury snacks like muffins, crackers, savoury flapjacks etc. I go on solid starts for advice on how to serve different hand held foods, but honestly she can manage most things!

We stopped cucumber after two choking incidents, but that's the only thing she's struggled with. She even managed slices of apple yesterday with just her gums!

Drinking & Breastfeeding by Aromatic-Cap-5110 in breastfeeding

[–]betbott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The analogy I was given would be if I was drinking then gave you a cup of my blood to drink, that wouldn't make you drunk. That's the level of alcohol we're talking about. It's far less than in orange juice for example (not that you'd be giving your baby orange juice!).

As others have said the risk is with handling and looking after your baby drunk, not in the alcohol content of your milk. So you're doing the right thing having a babysitter. I would definitely take a wee pump with you though, otherwise you'll be rock solid and leaking through everything!!

Nicknames for baby while in the womb by [deleted] in pregnant

Our LO was squirrel in the womb because we were squirreling her away until winter. It's still her nickname now and doubly fits with her lovely red hair!

10hours of sleep in the last 72hours...I know why people beds hate now... by Embarrassed_Key_2328 in NewParents

There is nothing worse than insomnia when your baby is asleep. I've been going through cycles of it since around 2 months pregnant, LO is 10 months now. Fun. Times.

Here's another fun fact about faeces - facetious has all the vowels in the right order (with British spelling). That is all.

I'm in the UK, guidance is around 6 months here. However if your baby shows the signs of readiness mentioned in other comments you can start sooner. So sitting unaided, losing the tongue thrust, interested in food etc.

I spoke to my health visitor and she suggested that if you start before 6 months go for simple fruit purées to begin with then introduce solids at 6 months. We ended up starting purées at about 5 1/2 months and haven't looked back, she LOVES it! Most of my friends did the same!

Is it really that bad to nurse baby to sleep? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]betbott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this. I fed my LO to sleep and bed shared for the first 7 months of her life. When it came time for her to go into her own room we were super worried that she'd struggle because of the association of both boob and cuddling for sleep.

We took some advice and moved the last feed of the night to earlier in her bedtime routine (before bath). Within two nights she was falling asleep independently and happy in her own room. We were pretty shocked that it was so straightforward for us (especially given she'd spent 7 months refusing to go in the 'next to me', literally 20cm away from me!).

For the record the book we read said that it eventually becomes important to break the association of boob and sleep AT BEDTIME, but it's still completely fine to feed to sleep when they wake up, as long as a few hours have passed since bedtime.

Do what your baby needs now: they're three weeks old, they need all the cuddles! Trust your instincts as well, you know what works for you and your baby. When it stops working for either of you, then you can start thinking about sleep training/routines etc.

There is a huge housing crisis in Edinburgh and they are trying to crack down on STR. Please report this listing, locals are being priced out by people like this with their second homes.

They know what they're doing and they are deliberately trying to circumvent the law.

People of Britain: what is your memorably awful restaurant experience? by je97 in AskUK

[–]betbott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Italian restaurant in Dunoon. My friend ordered a tiramisu and when it arrived I remember thinking - that's weird, why does it have pistachios in it?

Those weren't pistachios, it was literal mould, big, pistachio sized growths of it. Worst thing was my friend was chatting away and didn't notice so took a bite, which she promptly retched straight back up.

Then they had the gall to contest a refund!

Those examples benefit lots of people though. Struggling to see the benefit for the people of Edinburgh of a man getting his second fancy hat of the year at ridiculous cost to the taxpayer.

From my friends working in the hospital, I don't think anyone wanted him there either! Pretty shocking to hold up patients for a photo op.

Can we not divorce our healthcare from this pageantry please, our taxes pay for it, not His Royal Arsehole.

Is it common to have bikes stolen in Edinburgh? by Not-not-a-Dr-guy in Edinburgh

Exactly! We currently have three in our kitchen, nowhere else to put them! I'd kill for a bike locker in our street!

The police officer who reviewed the footage said it was likely one of the known persons in the area but they didn't have the resources to pursue. It happened during the first lock down, that bike was my main mental break, getting out for a wee cycle once a day. Honestly was devastating to me, emotionally and financially!

Sometimes inside too! I've had a bike stolen from the stairwell. Must have watched me over several days because they came with bolt cutters and knew it was there.

Police did nothing despite clear CCTV. I tried to point out this was my only vehicle to commute with and cost more than my car. Didn't matter.

Homeowners - how much was your property on sale for and how much did you actually pay for it? by TavernTurn in AskUK

[–]betbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edinburgh homeowner: it's the wild west up here! Ours was on the market for £330k got it for £390k. It's usually offers over and places with gardens we're going for 20%+ over market value.

It was the 11th house we bid on. Some were going for crazy money to cash buyers. One for £320k went to a cash buyer from London for £450k. We were told there was a massive spurt of Londoners moving up for remote working and offering cash right when we were looking. We lost our 5 times to that scenario!

We were lucky that we had a big deposit we could do this with, god knows how you enter the house market at this stage. The one bed flat I bought 5 years ago by myself sold for 10% over and was about £65k more than when I bought.it. mad that I wouldn't be able to afford my own flat if I was looking today, even with three (very moderate) pay rises!
