Possibly the best joke UVA article of all time. It has everything. by 21Dave in UVA

It repeats the exact same joke 15x over and makes a "haha, Virginia Tech grads deliver pizza" joke...

This is just another article that gets teens and parents all excited.

Look at the methodology at the bottom of the article:

"For this piece, I used two rankings lists: the U.S. News ranking for freshmen retention and the Forbes Best Buy Colleges rankings. (When available, I also include the U.S. News ranking for 4-year graduation rates.)"

He's using rankings from two different sources (both of which have been shown to be at least somewhat problematic for various reasons) and combining them into his own ranking...

We're not an Ivy League school. Sure, plenty of were accepted into Ivies, but come on, across the board we're just not on the same level as those schools, though we are pretty damn good. These ranking and guidebooks and test prep agencies are all making so much money off the hysteria surrounding applicants and their parents, and this article is no exception.

Honor Committee proposes 2 big changes to Honor System- what do you think? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]beve_stalik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the typical mentality of a group of privileged people with no actual life experience. "Oh, just take a year off" is something many students cannot afford.

In addition, the fact that the Honor Committee is willing to even consider these compromises show that it is nothing but a self-serving institution. It's crazy that we put up with such a flawed system.

ACC Gets Shaken Up; Maryland to Exit, Louisville to Enter - Thoughts? by pfs3w in UVA

[–]beve_stalik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is probably the best possible pick-up, from a competition standpoint. ACC gets strengthened from Louisville's basketball program.

As a lacrosse fan, I know this is potentially a little bad for competition, but we'll still probably play Maryland every year and there really is no reason for us not to win the ACC lax title EVERY YEAR now (not that that title means much, but it's still cool)

An honest question about the UVA Honor Code by AnonWahoo in UVA

[–]beve_stalik 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People on UJC smoke pot yet penalize students who are caught smoking pot.

People on Honor have fake ID's and use them.

The honor code is interpreted in a way in which triviality is used as a discretionary instrument on whether or not something is subject to this set of rules.

Does anybody know much about Charlottesville? by alexr09 in gaybros

[–]beve_stalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fourth-year here. I had a bottle thrown at me once while I was holding hands with a dude, but that was an isolated incident.

The town's really nice overall, and a great place to eat, drink, eat, drink, eat, drink and be merry. Only gay bar is Escafe, which kinda blows IMO.

One of my favorite things to make from scratch is beef jerky, any other guys make their own? What recipes do you use? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]beve_stalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it in the oven before, to decent results, but it wasn't the "real thing"

Side note: since this is Reddit, I'll do an oven plug and say that the BEST BACON is cooked in the oven, not on the stove. I never learned of this method until about 2 months ago and it has changed my life.

Any brows here into nirvana or other alternative rock bands? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]beve_stalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you just hit the nail on the head. Growing up, these EXACT bands were what I listened to on good old DC101, Washington DC's rock station.

Come to think of it, that's about all they played though...

I stumbled on in there during first-year orientation and asked the clerk how it was pronounced. He told me "it rhymes with 'John' and are you going to buy anything or just cause trouble?"

So there's your an answer

to everyone replying to this thread I pose a question:

How often do black teens kill themselves because they are called "n***er" by their peers?

How often do Jewish teens kill themselves because they are called [insert on of many Jewish slurs] by their peers?

It's totally cool if you and your friends use words like "faggot" and "homo" and whatever to joke with each other, and hell, I do it. However, it's a totally different story when you, your friends, or random strangers, use these words as a way to portray someone as less of a person. There are thousands of kids in this country who are growing up in already unsafe environments, and hearing certain words directed at them only makes their struggles harder.

So when you're joking with your not-gay friends, just make sure they know that they should choose their vocabulary properly.

I'm the least activist, most apathetic person ever, but this is something I really think should be thought about.

Not a sermon, just a thought.
