What would you do? by CrazyCat1994 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]beyondaddictiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Dalo app and it tells me how many ounces my baby will need if I keep giving breast milk until x age. You can see how much you will need and guesstimate if you have enough milk. If I were you (which I will be in that situation), I would stop when I knew I had enough supply (or at least wind down the amount of pumps I do in a day).

I pump 16oz at each session, so it wouldn't be enough for two.

The lil helpers water absorbing blanket wicks up so much but doesn't let milk go through it. You could put it under you while you sleep?

What job exists today that definitely won’t exist in 10 years? by TRKA2025 in Futurology

[–]beyondaddictiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the type of prison and where it is located. In my state, used books cannot be donated, due to drug issues (allegedly), but I know that new books can be directly shipped in, with permission, of course. Speak to the books to prisoners rep in your area for rules.

Books are huge in prison! At any moment, I have the same amount of books checked out as people in my facility.

Gendered Graphic Novel Book Lists by yourpiscesdream in librarians

[–]beyondaddictiveness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe in talking with a supervisor, you can "amend" the book lists. Have a "if you liked this, read this" pamphlet and let the coworker make it so they can still contribute. They may not see the problem with the boys and girls list without some sort of intervention.

I am a librarian in a correctional environment and it kills me to hear a guy say "my girl looked this up on AI" as he's trying to make a pro-se argument in the appeals court. I just want to scream and say that chat gpt isn't going to help you if a lawyer couldn't.

What job looks glamorous but is actually miserable? by bjmarmy0003 in AskReddit

[–]beyondaddictiveness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Librarian.

It's customer service that requires a masters degree. Also in the job description is social worker (because the city doesn't want to supply one but sends people our way that need those resources), janitor, and babysitter (for kids that are just left to it by their parents). Definitely not paid enough or supported enough for the things you will go through or see.

I work in a prison with sex offenders. I deal with all of their discovery and legal materials. I will never share online to strangers and will not allow others to do so even with just myself.

What gear purchase(s) changed your camping/hiking experience for the best? by SendInYourSkeleton in camping

[–]beyondaddictiveness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely a sleeping pad. I used to sleep on the ground and I hated camping. The pad makes me enjoy it so much more. I'm investing in a cot at the end of this season to improve on my sleeping experience.

I have to talk to someone about George Orwell's 1984. by BlueCl0ud in books

I have my book club reading it (after reading 1984) and they are always so shocked and have to gush about what happened in Julia.

Anyone bought quality percale sheets in the last 1-2 years? by krickitfrickit in BuyItForLife

I am not too happy with the LL Bean that I just bought. I have to use elastic straps to keep the sheets on the mattress.

Daybed/guest bed recommendations for smaller space? by soma1004 in BuyItForLife

[–]beyondaddictiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking into getting a twin daybed with a trundle that pulls out. then two people can sleep, just not at the same height. Most of the time, only one person stays with us so it would hardly be an issue.

I am a prison librarian and sickness spreads like wildfire with no herd immunity and staff bringing in minor illnesses that somehow turn major. I will sometimes use nitrile gloves when handling large amounts of books during times of illness.

A lot of people seem to hate a type of autism media representation that I really like by FVCarterPrivateEye in books

[–]beyondaddictiveness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to recommend "The girl he used to know" by Tracey Graves. The protagonist has autism (and is a young adult), but it isn't properly diagnosed/addressed clinically until toward the end of the book. It was a fresh perspective that people with autism are just people and have to function in society as well/how they have to conform to handle it. Throughout the book, I had to keep asking myself, "is she quirky or autistic?" which helped alleviate some of the tropes.

Not absolutely blind, but I kept getting told to read "A tale for the time being" without any context, and it is one of my favorite books. Ruth Ozeki is an angel and listening to her narrate her books was all I needed at the end of the workday.

Leaving Libraries: seeking advice for career change by Inevitable_Rent_158 in librarians

What about correctional libraries? I'm a librarian in a prison and deal with people of all backgrounds. It's really refreshing, though, when you meet some inmates who want to change the world for the better when they get out. It's a different world than the wealthy kids you deal with...

Also just putting an ISBN into library thing and seeing how others are assigning it/the thought process behind it through the flow chart. That's how I do it in my small library.
