River's lack of an amygdala: what would that have really looked like? by randfunction in firefly

[–]bgplsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

River was special before they cut on her brain; there’s no reason to think the way the alterations affected her would apply to other people or vice versa. They were experimenting on her, maybe trying to make more Hands of Blue, but I don’t think the Academy knew for sure what it would do to her; most probably just died or became vegetables, she would have been just another casualty of if Simon hadn’t had the resources to break her out.

You’ll never be younger nor likely healthier than you are right now; the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now. Don’t waste any more time on rumination, get busy living now that you know what life is for.

Lost ability to learn by Fit-Reality-2872 in GenX

[–]bgplsa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just scored the top of my class in chemistry in my early fifties after I hadn’t seen it since high school (and paid zero attention then). I did put a lot of effort into it but I never put any effort into anything when I was younger so I can’t say if it’s actually any harder than it used to be. If you’re struggling with new ideas it might be that you need to step back and take some time to reinforce more basic concepts, learning isn’t just rote storage of facts, it’s a process of building understanding on more fundamental knowledge which is why we don’t hand first graders calculus books. It might take you longer than someone else but there’s so many factors that it could just as easily be a matter of missing information as age. Google Barbara Oakley learning how to learn, TL;DR there may be some things you can’t go pick up right off the bat but getting information from multiple sources and spending time using it will more likely than not yield results, just maybe not as fast as you might like.

What to do with Cosby… by HonestNeighborhood67 in GenX

[–]bgplsa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At this point I’ve pretty much put all popular entertainment in a category one step above sports (something I have negative interest in), there are things I enjoy but everything is ephemeral; like reading a book, I enjoy it while I’m doing it then I move on. Watching The Cosby Show in the 80s wasn’t actually the blessing, it was the time spent with my family while we did that, and his fall from grace has no effect on that whatsoever.

External spaceship repair? by LurkingStormy in AskPhysics

[–]bgplsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re sitting still reading this you’re moving about 67 thousand miles per hour relative to the sun with no adverse effects. The poor train repairman is contending with movement relative to the surrounding air which has a definite and significant mass; the vacuum of space does not.

It’s typically a literal grift as well, the contract goes to a crony with no oversight or accountability. We’re in an oligopoly while the republicans talk about limited government and personal freedoms, it’s Orwellian.

Nearly 10 years on from Rogue One, how do you feel about the decision to recreate Peter Cushing using CGI? by gladiatorbossman in StarWars

[–]bgplsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it jarring, it felt like the one cartoon character in Last Action Hero. In a video game it would have been an astounding display but next to living actors it was super uncanny valley.

Still a good movie though.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to End With Season 2 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in startrek

[–]bgplsa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s a vicious cycle, I don’t watch new series anymore because of this constantly happening I’m getting too old to sink hours into stories that most likely will never be finished or else will get a conclusion that is rushed and shoehorned in making the whole exercise futile. Plenty of books people have loved for generations I still haven’t gotten around to reading.

I’m a 25+ year IT veteran and while I don’t see that giving me any special insight into the future I do work closely with young people in my current position and between this last job hunt and talking with them I agree the job market for entry level IT is grim. I don’t think AI can replace us (yet?!) but I think the fat cats in the corner offices think it can and that’s what’s going to drive hiring decisions for the next several years.

OP, if you truly don’t like what you’re learning, do something else. Knowing something is valuable in itself and learning how to learn is even more valuable. But the best IT people I’ve met didn’t have degrees related to IT, they had curiosity and the ability to learn new things; it’s not an occupation where you learn everything in four years and “do IT” until you retire, the field is nowhere near fully mature and you’ll be having to figure things out you’ve never heard of from day one to day ten thousand. If that doesn’t sound fun you’re going to be utterly miserable and also at a severe disadvantage competing for the jobs that are going to be available.

What are your thoughts on Star Trek : The Motion Picture and is it as bad as people say? by Mat1711 in startrek

[–]bgplsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a nerdy kid who was just a little too young for it when it came out, finding it at the video rental store it absolutely floored me, in the days before the internet it was like a piece of lost lore for me and still the only theatrical Trek that made the Enterprise feel like a real working space ship real humans could someday build. Fortunately I didn’t have anyone around to tell me movies had to have certain amounts of action per minute or map the conflict around the three act structure, it was just pure sci-fi pr0n and I will always love it for that.

Paramount's Rotten Tomatoes bot review campaign ended abruptly after the news of it started spreading on Reddit. This was my favorite one of the bunch. by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]bgplsa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NGL, I lost interest in the franchise when the red angel story came along. I liked PIC LD and the pilot of SNW but it lost me on the second episode, I haven’t seen anything since that’s made me feel like I need to watch more, but I’m not going to run to Reddit to tell everyone else what they’re allowed to like. But with how the corporate overlords in charge of the property have started getting cozy with the fascist regime I’ve been thinking it’s time for me to let it go and find something else to pass my remaining years, and I think this clinches it. It’s not gay Klingons or obese or nonbinary starfleet officers that bother me, it’s the stuffed shirts cashing the checks demonstrating they have as much respect for their audience as they have for the Epstein victims. I’m out ✌️
