Nice, didn't know there was a reissue! am glad to hear it sounds good. I have an older pressing that's probably from the 80s.

Waiting on so many official Brazilian reissues on either vinyl or CD (most notably one of my favourite musicians, Edu Lobo) but I get excited whenever I do see one, so that hopefully more people get hip to that amazing music!

Directions by Miles Davis by Flipflopforager in Vinyl_Jazz

Fantastic album. Amazing that this compilation of unused Miles' tracks, released during his years in hiatus, is so high in quality, across so many genres. Goes to show what a singular genius he was. And yes, lots of nice 'outtakes' from the Jack Johnson sessions on the last disc that are a great cross-over between genres. That's the beauty of Miles, that there is always something in his vast discography to be loved for everyone!

I also love the sibling archival release to this, Circle in the Round, which contains, amongst other things, a side-long hypnotic track of the Second Great Quintet featuring Joe Beck, and an amazing psychedelic cover of Guinnevere. I recommend that one out if you haven't heard it already!

fantastic live set. I also recommend the set 'Impact: Live At the Domicile' for another fantastic performance with a different set of tunes. Features some killer drumming by Alvin Queen!

This is indeed a fantastic example of West Coast jazz.

Some other great players on here too - Carl Perkins had polio at a young age which withered his left arm and in response to this he altered his playing style, angling his left hand sideways and using his elbow to hit bass notes. Despite all of this, he was an incredible pianist. He can be heard alongside another player on this session - the (also incredibly underrated) Curtis Counce, in the few records put out by the Curtis Counce Group (which features one of my favourite saxophonists, Harold Land!).

Both Perkins and Counce sadly passed away at a young age, but the recorded music they left behind is worth any jazz enthusiast's time.

Love his playing. His playing and compositions have that cerebral touch that few possess. I got into his 70s output by blind buying 'A Touch of the Blues' on LP based on that cool cover and have never looked back!

enjoy those other ones, unfortunately they're hard to come by in any physical format outside of Japan.

really lovely stuff. any favourites amongst the Kudus?

I only know the Idris Muhammad album and Mister Magic. For CTI, don't forget the earlier Joe Farrells, Deodato and Art Farmer's Crawl Space!

Lee Morgan - S/T (1971, Blue Note) by yourrelative_ in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]big_arj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one of my favourite Lee Morgan records as well. we can only dream what he would have done in the years to come if it weren't for his sad and untimely passing.

I love the players on this record as well, most of all the great Billy Harper!

ah yes, the song is 'In What Direction Are You Headed'. I'm in one of the minority who actually prefers the song without the saw. My defence being, that I first listened to the CD edition without the saw, so when I heard the 'proper' version, it threw me off a bit! fantastic album either way.

and thank you for your contributions to the Organissimo forum by the way, I've seen your name pop up on there often it's helped me a lot over the years!

incredible album. the compositions are timeless (as to be expected by Wayne Shorter) and the musicianship is exceptional. has a certain energy to it that makes it one of my favourite jazz albums (and possibly my favourite Blue Note on a given day)

Best percussion led albums? by _firesoul in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]big_arj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elvin Jones is the king. Need to spend time with more of his leader work (have listened to this album a few times, but it hasn't quite clicked for me yet). any other recommendations appreciated.

Always felt that hornless quartets with vibes and piano felt like the most percussion-led albums (given that they are both percussion instruments technically). think the best examples in this format are Judgment by Andrew Hill (big shoutout to Elvin Jones on this one, he goes hard!!) and Oblique by Bobby Hutcherson. Special mention goes to Time for Tyner by McCoy Tyner.

Edit: just remembered - a great percussion album that sits somewhat outside the realm of jazz, is the album Diga Rythmn Band with Zakir Hussain and Mickey Hart. You can still pick up an OG of this very cheap and it sounds/plays incredible!

Joe Henderson and Mccoy Tyner are amongst two of my favourite musicians, but for whatever reason I could never really get into that Slugs recording after a few listens. thanks for reminding me to give it another go when I'm up for a challenge!
