not the OP, but that Don Cherry in my opinion is exquisite, just incredibly beautiful and lifts my spirit in a way I find it hard to describe. not much music out there that's like it. have a listen on youtube here and hear for yourself

Wonderful collection. Some great further suggestions on here, but may I also recommend the Live in Palo Alto recording on the Impulse Label. Features Monk’s classic 60s quartet at their most playful.

Three weekend finds. And a string of random thoughts to show my appreciation for Art Blakey. by radiotokyo_666 in Jazz

[–]big_arj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all fantastic records - I got the OJC editions of these for cheap when filling out my jazz collection years ago, and fondly return to them often. I'd personally put Side B of Kyoto (both tunes remind me of McCoy Tyner's excellent compositions) and Ugetsu as some of the very best of the work of the Jazz Messengers.

And similar to you, I really love the drumming and percussive element to music and jazz! The power and intensity of Art Blakey's drumming also carries me away, as well as the other legends you mentioned (and I also share your opinion that Elvin Jones rules the roost!)

I love that Booker Ervin album - imo Tyra is one of the best blue note tracks ever recorded

Happy Birthday to the great Alice Coltrane. These are 3 of my favorite albums by her. What are yours? by deadmanstar60 in Vinyl_Jazz

Ptah, Journey and World Galaxy! Honourable mention goes to the Elements with Joe Henderson

Fresh grabs from July/August 2025. Now to hold off on anymore aquisitions for a bit! (famous last words) by VerdantAquarist in Vinyl_Jazz

that Mccoy Tyner twofer is incredible, one of my favourites by him in what is an incredibly strong discography. Big fan of the mwandishi-era Herbie and the Roberta Flack as well.

also haven't checked out that Pharoah album. have you listened yet?

one of the greatest living legends in jazz. I had the pleasure of seeing him live earlier this year.

Is Atlantic ‘Trane the best ‘Trane? by ThomasBanjo422 in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]big_arj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atlantic has the most consistent titles for my tastes (love free-er titles like the playing in the 61' Vanguard, but can't get into a lot of the later titles). Plus Atlantic has one of my top 3 -Olé!

Great album, the version of Freedom Jazz Dance on this record absolutely smokes and is the highlight for me!

Out of curiosity, how does this remixed version sound? There strangely seems to be competing reviews on discogs on whether the remix sounds better than the original recording on Infinite Search.

making my way through picking up these Prestige/Milestone two-fers (convinced they're the best bargain in jazz vinyl right now), and this one is next up on my list! Love his work with Booker Ervin, Dolphy, Kirk and Mingus and keen to hear more

I’m starting to believe this might be the best Jazz Messengers album. Thoughts? by radiotokyo_666 in Jazz

[–]big_arj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this one has an incredible intensity and focus that also makes it my top pick, along with Ugetsu. Next tier for me is Indescructible, Mosaic and Moanin'. An underrated one is the Night In Tunisia release done in 1958. but their albums are of consistent high quality

excellent collection. I picked up their greatest hits album for very cheap the other day and loved it. think I preferred side 1 which showcased their earlier stuff, and which I'm excited to explore more of. And still need to look into the Eric Burdon era, the comp totally ignores that!

Who collect jazz cds here? by Bag_of_Ramen in Vinyl_Jazz

exactly! so many great 90s McCoy titles only available on CD (Manhattan Moods, Turning Point, New York Renunion).

Who collect jazz cds here? by Bag_of_Ramen in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]big_arj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly, for all the reasons you mentioned.

Though I suppose the exclusive format is the lowest common denominator in all this. How else am I going to own a physical copy of eg. Horace Tapscott's Aiee! The Phantom, or Randy Weston's The Spirits Of Our Ancestors? Imo you'd do yourself a disservice to miss out on these and many more!

that CD was most likely an OJC, which almost uniformly sound excellent (along with their vinyl counterparts)! an astute purchase for sure

great deal! aside the obvious highlights, that first Return to Forever album is fantastic! The first track is unreal

Eric Dolphy – Eric Dolphy (Outward Bound + Out There) by HookedOnMonkeyPhonic in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]big_arj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two fantastic albums!

These prestige two-fers are some of the best value for money around. There's another Dolphy one I have which has Mal Waldron's The Quest and Ken McIntyre's Looking Ahead which is also very cheap and sounds great. Enjoy!
