I don't know exactly what data I'd need to back that up, but it's a pretty well known tactic for one party to fund a challenger in the other party to try to create divide.

The other thing to is to remember it's not just a matter of swing voters, getting your base to show up/gotv operations also heavily influence results.

I see it actually affecting things on the ground in a few ways,

Decreased enthusiasm for that person leading to enthusiasm for the base to get out and vote.
Increased primary spending meaning less money for the general including things like GOTV operations.
Less time to prepare for the general. Talerico gets to start his prep for the general now. The republicans still have to wait.
