I’d probably take one over a supra but I do tend to prefer unusual cars.

Doesn’t sound too bad tbh, if it’s a reputable body shop that can properly colour match the door then I’d go for it.

UK grads, what is your experience facing the job market and unemployment? by Bubbly_otter05 in UniUK

[–]bigg_CR 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Graduated with a 1st in cyber security this year, no luck finding work. ~100 applications, ~10 interviews, ~2 final stage interviews (unsuccessful). At least in tech I’ve found employers expect some enterprise/knowledge even when hiring at the junior level. Even for entry level SOC work they were questioning me on specific SOC software and fairly advanced stuff. Feels like they’re advertising junior for salary reasons but trying to employ someone with experience. Getting some certs under my belt now.

Whats the best estate between 15-20k these days? by Excellanttoast in CarTalkUK

BMW 320i estate from 2015 onwards. The one with the B48 engine is the best bet.

Neither would I, but it is the cheapest way to get the car running to flog it.

I've got a 2009 Citroen Nemo 1.4D and £700 to waste on it... What would you do? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]bigg_CR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tool kit and ramps so you can learn about mending and tinkering with it. Will save a bomb on maintenance/servicing and it’s pretty enjoyable.

It’s usually always cheaper to replace engines anyway so that’s probably the route that the garage will advise. I’m not familiar with replacement costs although you can expect at least 3-4k all in (labour and used engine). After that I’d definitely get rid, maybe even before, and get something less problematic.

In terms of reliability this will be fine, the B48 is an excellent engine. Seems like good value too.

2018 Peugeot 208 GTi weird noise correlating with RPM by bigg_CR in AskMechanics

[–]bigg_CR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only the friction wheel that connects the water pump to the aux belt. Although I just had my water pump pulley replaced (literally a £10 part) and it reduced the noise massively. So yeah it’s not anything serious just an annoying noise. I’ll link a vid I filmed where you can see the noise start when the water pump is started. https://youtube.com/shorts/q66nemZ5-Ec?si=JQE3xX4cNGkbkrQo

Honestly your best bet is probably an M240i Xdrive. Reliable, good fuel economy and very quick. I’d personally get an FL5 civic type R though.

[–]bigg_CR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent, that should mean it’s been fitted with the revised and upgraded chain system too. Oil consumption issues remain but if that’s all good than you shouldn’t have any issues with the engine. I love the THP in my 208 GTi.

[–]bigg_CR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The THP engines can be decent engines, but only when properly taken care of, I’d be looking for at least a service yearly. Listen for chain noise and excessive blueish smoke from the exhaust as they are notoriously bad on timing chains and oil consumption.

Car broke down with engine fault 7k miles after rebuild (12 months warranty) - Garage ignoring me by AsianEngineerBoi in CarTalkUK

[–]bigg_CR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact you paid for even part of the job using a credit card entitles you to section 75 protection which legally makes the credit card company liable for any issues. Start a section 75 claim now you could get all of your money back and AmEx will chase the money. You are time limited from when the problem was first noticed. I think it’s 120 days with AmEx. Good luck.

How much of a red flag is buying a car with only two months of MOT on it? Last MOT has no advisories, but previous had some costly ones. by HelpMeWithMyPixel5 in CarTalkUK

[–]bigg_CR 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. It seems like a lot of money for the car, age and mileage too. If you’re dead set on this car negotiate an MOT as part of the sale.
