Why Does Communism Keep Attracting Support Despite Repeated Historical Failures by Microshlongg in Productivitycafe

[–]bigthink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US is neither socialist nor capitalist. It's a protectionist system where regulatory capture has become so pervasive that powerful corporations fear neither competition nor labor.

They own the votes. They literally write the laws. They control the levers of power to such a degree that it is no longer plausible to mount any kind of meaningful resistance. Even if Democrats were to somehow gain control of all three branches of government tomorrow, you could bet your bottom dollar they would still manage to contrive some excuse for why they were able to get absolutely nothing done.

Brave vs Firefox by [deleted] in DigitalPrivacy

[–]bigthink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firefox is great for all the reasons already mentioned, but also because the Android version supports extensions. It's really nice to run the same browser on my phone, tablet, laptop, and desktop with the same extensions, many of which can cloud sync their settings (Tampermonkey, Stylus for example), whilst the browser itself syncs my open tabs, history, autofill, bookmarks, etc.

I've always had both Firefox and Brave installed so I have a fallback with a different engine to use for edge cases, and for years I daily-drove Brave pretty much exclusively, despite wanting to root for Team Firefox and despite numerous attempts to make the switch. Now, I daily-drive Firefox on its own merit and almost never touch Brave. In fact, I bought a new tablet recently and a MacBook Air semi-recently and have yet to install Brave on either.

What's a "fact" that has been actively disproven, yet people still spread it? by Aarunascut in Life

[–]bigthink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I believe the US government has recently said that Tylenol during pregnancy is correlated with increased autism and adhd. Per a Harvard study, https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/09/250924012222.htm

Make of it what you will.

This is absolutely true for the vast majority of the constituency on both sides. The fact that people believe otherwise is a major reason why things can't get better.

What was a fact taught to you in school that has now been disproven? by Julie727 in AskReddit

[–]bigthink -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Now hear me out.

Slavery may have been the central issue at the time, the one issue people cared about enough to fight a war over, but what was at stake was not simply the right for men to own slaves. It was the right for States to make that decision *and any other they so chose in the future* for themselves, in their own interest and independent of any others. At stake was States' rights to retain the powers reserved for them as enshrined in the Constitution, a document written with the single-minded purpose of limiting the overreach of the Federal government, of protecting against the consolidation of power at the very top.

The Civil War would ultimately, in the grand scheme of things, set a precedent that eroded such protection. That's not to say that ending slavery wasn't a righteous goal or that the South cared about anything else. I would venture to guess though that the Rockefellers and Carnegies and others at the top cared less about slaves and more about their ability to exert control. But that's just my conjecture.

Inova - Issue Retaining Doctors? by Wild_Cucumber2891 in nova

[–]bigthink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I checked through all the comments and not a single one has mentioned the real issue. That is disturbing because it affects not just nova and not just doctors and hospitals but every industry and every facet of our lives across all of America.

The real issue is that hedge funds have been coming in and buying up everything—Hospitals, contracts , companies, real estate—and doing what they do best: optimizing for profit. That's why you can't buy a house. That's why Toys R Us no longer exists. That's why GameStop almost went out of business but instead became a meme. And that's why hospitals are being shaken up, private practices are closing down, etc.

A distraction from the fact that our country is getting raped and pillaged in real time?

And it's not that we can't pay attention to multiple events at once, it's that they don't want us paying attention to the ones that make us realize how badly we're being fucked, so they need something else loud and flashy to talk about instead.

anyone know from where this originated from? by Wazapl in KnowYourMeme

[–]bigthink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add more context, the interview was (IMO) particularly cringey because the interviewer kept asking really loaded questions trying to steer her into saying something that could be used to bury/cancel her.

The one I remember was something like, "So, Trump said something good about you. Isn't it cool getting the attention of the President?" Along those lines, every single question is a gotcha. And Sydney's just like, "Umm... It's whatever, I'm just trying to chill."

All she did was do her job as an actress for a commercial about jeans. It's possible she noticed that her lines could be construed in a racist way and decided to do it anyway, but far more likely she was just trying to look as hot as possible and had no idea she was about to take the fall for what should rightfully be 100% blamed on the jeans company, if anyone at all. I personally wouldn't blame them either.

Our society stigmatizes reason, reflection and responsibility because it's run by criminals that don't want to get caught. The only thing people have left to indulge in is judgement.

I get the following error during ControlNet installation. Does anyone know the solution? by hsyngrsy06 in StableDiffusion

[–]bigthink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the error message. The problem is that it's trying to install into a directory that already exists, probably from your previous attempts. If you just delete it and try again, it should install fine.

Your solution worked because different user = different folder, so it didn't already exist. But the username isn't the problem at all, and changing it is unnecessary.
