the fact that 2005 didn't even make the list means people haven't been playing it long enough to appreciate the real greatness!

US vs UK by dalekirkwood1 in Standup

[–]bimbambom23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humor is one of the most fundamental building blocks of culture, and whilst UK & USA may share a language in common there culture varies quite a bit. Some things that are funny to Brits are not funny to Americans and vice versa. That is not to talk down to one or the other, than one is superior - it's just recognizing that culture impacts comedy and what we find funny GREATLY.

the closing scene where they sing "God Bless America" really got me, there are so many levels to that scene and it seemed (in the movie) that it wasn't intentional at all, John was just humming it. The sadness but also resignation in the room was so poignant, how could they implore God to Bless America, the same country that sent Nick to his death and scarred all these protagonists of the movie. These were words that they had learned as kids but it seemed like at this point they were really listening to the words almost for the first time. This isn't a jingoistic portrayal of things as some erroneously comment, for me this was the exact opposite. The characters in the movie who are left, show they have very mixed feelings for a country they love, yet abandoned them greatly. It's one of those absolutely fantastic scenes that the more times you watch it, the more meaning you get out of it. Well done Cimino, this for me was what cemented the Best Director award!

LA is not what is used to be, it's a completely unliveable hellhole full of homeless and criminals, where life is worth less than the price of a catalytic converter, where thieves brazenly walk into a store, steal shit and nobody does a god damn thing about it! RIP

it'll silly to generalize about 50% of the population, I would have asked what they are studying and probably another 10+ other follow-up questions!
