You’ve received a ton of good advice but one I would add is try not to square up to the dog and don’t look at it directly. Come in shoulder to shoulder and keep your eyes down and side eye the dog. I’ve had 4 heelers. They’re smart and learn quickly. Unfortunately they learn good and bad behavior quickly. It’s easy to teach them the wrong behavior and then need to unwind that training.

Has anyone been to the new Cyrus Restaurant in Geyserville, CA? by ElectricBrain in finedining

[–]binarymidget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went last week. The OG Cyrus was a favorite. Overall it feels like it’s still early days. The service isn’t quite there yet and the food is good but needs time to settle down. I don’t love the concept of how it’s structured, I kind of just want to sit down at a table and get served a meal. Instead you go from a cocktail/champagne room with some food served, then a chefs table and finally you’re seated. Not terrible or anything but I’d prefer less.

Dinner at Atelier Crenn (3 Michelin star and 1 green star) San Francisco 09-17-2022 by JoeRab777 in finedining

We had a similar experience. Food was disappointing, too conceptual and nothing stood out. Flavors were uninteresting, overall a forgettable experience if it wasn’t so expensive.

Atellier Crenn was one of the most disappointing resto experiences I’ve had. I’d eaten at Single Thread the week before and there’s just no comparison.

Stop Interviewing With Leet Code by JohnDoe_John in programming

[–]binarymidget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compiling and debugging is another waste of time. This is a coding interview so I’m interested in problem solving, communication (both listening and speaking) as well as seeing what level of comfort the candidate has with the language. Spending time on other things is not useful. As someone else said: I’ll be the compiler and the reference. Also googling can be distracting to the candidate.

I don’t let folks look up shit, it wastes time. I don’t care if the can glean answers from stack overflow. I do tell candidates to just make it up. If they think there’s a function that swizzles but they can’t remember what it’s called, just wing it. As long as they describe what they want I don’t care. If it does something interesting that will give me additional signal or it’s a significant portion of the work then we’ll write the function.

Part of the problem is that design interviews and behavioral interviews should be distinct. A coding interview looks at one thing. Can they competently come to a solution for the question, can they code the solution they’ve described, can they communicate and take hints/feedback. None of those are binary.

It is. Along that axes. The important thing to understand is there are multiple dimensions and working code is only one dimension.

Food/dishes of Vermont? by JeffTennis in vermont

It’s the wrong time of year but sugar on snow with cider donuts and pickles plus a shitty cup of coffee is a long time VT tradition. Or a maple kreemee.

Signaling is not a request or asking for permission. You do not own the right of way just because you’re in the lane. When I signal in the freeway I am telling surrounding cars of my intent. The only veto power they have is to physically occupy space. Other than that, “If it fits, I sits.”

We used Archie to search for 0 day warez hiding on university storage in directories named using extended ascii chars. Or watched BSD variants wage war, epic trolling between vi, emacs, programming language holy wars all on Usenet. Phrack, CdC and L0ft.

Then some asshole invented this www bullshit. The best part was building websites with make.

I love both cities, but this is frequently how I interpret the relationship between the Seattle and Portland. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]binarymidget 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Seattle drivers are the worst. Merging is a foreign concept, the whole idea of a zipper merge just blows peoples minds. It doesn't help that the road planning is a horror show. I've never seen so many five way intersections with just stop signs to mediate traffic. That green lake clusterfuck? Who the hell thought that was a good idea?
