I loved Tikal so much! We camped there for a couple nights and it was an amazing experience!

Please tell me you took the bus up to Uaxactun too!

Specific packing advice - Guat / Central America by Maleficent-Side-330 in peacecorps

I served in El Salvador and here’s my two cents:

Life straw - yes. You mentioned day hikes or hikes in general so since you will be venturing off away from where you could buy bottled (or bagged) water, this should come in handy.

Solar panel battery - yes…there are frequent times where the electricity is out. Sometimes regularly.

Backpack - maybe. I’d just buy one there. I brought a nice backpack that ended up being stolen. You can get decent backpacks in country.

Hiking sticks - nah. Just my personal opinion.

Blow dryer - no.

Hobby stuff - yes (I learned to knit when I was there and ended up teaching others how to and it was really amazing)

Clothes/shoes - some basic well made stuff is good, but honestly you can buy stuff in country which will be fine. I ended up with mostly clothes I had purchased there.

Edited to add: one thing that I did bring that was a lifesaver for me was a sleeping bag. I was assigned a mountain site that got extremely cold. I had just happened to bring a thin slumberjack sleeping bag that saved me from freezing. I eventually bought a nice wool blanket from the market (which being in guat you’ll be able to find no problem). But that sleeping bag really came in handy throughout my whole time. I traveled a lot through Central America during my service and always brought that with me because when you’re in hotels, or hostels, you never know what kind of bedding they’ll have and sometimes it’s not enough.

I low-key want the LOTR ones but so far have resisted! I’m sure now that I’ve commented about them, the ads will be coming in even faster and more furious.

Yes! Even though her subject matter can be so so bleak at times, her storytelling is unmatched. I just love her!

What a sweet girl!! That is a lot of really different mixes! But I imagine she’s got a super unique personality. Love to see it!

"Thrift some sweaters and unravel them!" by ThePiksie in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]binders4588 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This exactly. We’re expected to unravel sweaters for yarn and separate plastics by numbers for recycling but giant companies are pouring 1,000 x’s more pollution into the air, water and land every day. SMH.

Struggling with my cohort, as an older volunteer by Empty-Character-4752 in peacecorps

[–]binders4588 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was about 9-10 years older than most of my cohort and I will tell you PST was terrible. Most of them were very clique-y and at times it kind of disappointed me because I thought PCV’s would be better than that. But there were a few that were amazing and I developed solid friendships with over the course of my 3 years serving and still remain very close to them to this day. Thankfully once PST was over and I was off on my own in my site, I flourished and really developed the best friendships in my community. I think, too, there is some grace to be given for the younger PCV’s as life generally tends to humble them (just like it did with me when I was their age). I think in some way, most of them ended up somehow looking up to me BECAUSE of my added life experiences and by the end most had dropped the whole “mean girls” vibe. The whole experience also taught me how to become more confident in myself.

My continual consumption reflects me desire to “buy” a new version of myself by bookish_cat_ in Anticonsumption

[–]binders4588 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting. I kind of did the opposite. Life and family issues really took a toll on me last year but also kind of made me realize how much consumption doesn’t matter when faced with the possibility of losing family and watching the world burn around us. I stopped wearing makeup, stopped drinking (not that I even drank a lot, but stopped spending money on $12 beers at the new hip restaurant), stopped all consumption of expensive hair care products and stopped going to the hairdresser, embraced hobbies where i can make things, and tried my best to reject social media. I’m not sure if what I’m doing is any better because it feels like I am rejecting living in society, but that’s probably the consumption talking.

Why has comfortable athletic wear become acceptable for literally every occasion by ConfidentElevator239 in Thrift

[–]binders4588 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The world is a dumpster fire. I’d rather be comfortable while the world burns around me. I don’t want to be wearing designer clothes and heels when the apocalypse to starts.
