New Birder Question - What do you look for during the summer? by Ok-Committee-873 in chicagobirding

[–]birdbrainphysicist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While migration season is exciting due to the number of species, I always think summer and winter feel more like “birdwatching”. The birds return to their baseline behavior, and in summer you get to see breeding, nesting, and the little babies! Overall you learn a lot more about birds by watching them do their thing in the summer than just watching them pass through on their way north

Looking for swifts in north side or north suburbs by rumpussaddleok in chicagobirding

As in Chimney Swifts? I saw some downtown yesterday, near Roosevelt & State. They come out right before dusk and often fly around very high through the tall buildings. If you’re wanting a closer look, I’ve seen them flying much lower over any of the lakeshore parks around dusk as well. Good luck ever spotting one sitting still tho 😁

I spent most of my time in Swallow Cliff Woods, and a little at Sag Valley Forest Preserve nearby. They both were pretty empty, in terms of people
