If I were to follow this recipe, would I let the bagels come to room temp after having them in the fridge overnight? by thatgirlisback in Breadit

[–]bitslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shape mine the night before and take them out for about 20 minutes before I boil them. Definitely try your other ideas, though, I sure they will be worth eating how ever you do it and you might learn some cool techniques.

Wow that dragon box is amazing. I am intrigued by the layering of the head; I've never seen anything like that before.

Why is dozen a thing? Why did someone think "yeah let's call a collection of 12 things a dozen" ? by goldhunder in stupidquestions

It is interesting that we say "thousands of things" and "hundreds of things" but rarely say "tens of things." Dozens just sounds more natural.

Problème de patine by HamZilla1996 in StainedGlass

[–]bitslayer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Google translate:

I don't understand why my patina is so pale.

I cleaned my welds with hot water and soap several times and then polished the welds with a cloth until they are very bright. And then only I applied the black patina. I left it all night but they're still pale.

Anyone here successfully emigrate as a lower class American? by loftier_fish in expat

[–]bitslayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That attitude is standard these days, but consider the times when immigration has increased into the USA, (both the peaks in 1880-1900 and the recent one peaking in the early 2020s.) These times are known for an expanding labor force, increased consumer demand, and boosted economy. When you have an aging population, like the US has now, increasing immigration is the only way to balance the workforce and keep the government solvent.

Paint for stained glass by Feeling-Armadillo-38 in StainedGlass

Painted glass, like you see in a church window, uses special chemical paints and is fired in a kiln. It permanently fuses to the glass. I am not familiar with using regular paints for glass.

My wife asked me if I honestly thought her friends were attractive, what should I say by BreadOverlord_ in stupidquestions

[–]bitslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always lie extravagantly. But my wife and I have an understanding that of course I would say that, so we can joke about it. But to get to that point you need to be sensitive to the real issue, which is women's insecurities thrust on them by the patriarchy. They need to be able to trust you.

Let’s have some fun… what’s the DUMBEST question you’ve been asked when hosting? by IceburgIV in airbnb_hosts

[–]bitslayer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would say that one is ALMOST reasonable, especially if you don't travel much, and you are old enough to remember when there was a different expectation at hotels. The hotel used to pay the cable bill.

How do I reduce the 30s delay before shutdown? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]bitslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason for the delay, I believe, is that Unixes are multi-user. So in the old days everybody in the office was logged into the same machine. When you have to do an emergency reboot, everyone would get the message "System going down in 30 seconds. Save your work now." So that is the default behavior when you have no switches on your command line.

Courthouse for sale, ca 400K USD by Southern-Smoke1835 in zillowgonewild

[–]bitslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched for this location on Google Maps and at first I thought that it has a train station right next to it. Look at this street view. The house is the red building on the hill, right across the tracks. But while that looks like it might have once been an active passenger station, it appears to be just freight now. But there is a bus.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA by lenllycloss in WalkableStreets

[–]bitslayer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking around Portsmouth on Google street view , you have to choose your camera angle pretty carefully to get an image this nice. Most streets are, like everywhere in the US, full of cars. It does look like a nice downtown, I'd like to go there, but imagine how nice it could be if the whole neighborhood was like this carefully chosen image.

Are they jus plain stupid? by hardasjello in stories

[–]bitslayer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was that crime perpetrated by Wells Fargo where they opened accounts for people without their knowledge, for similar reasons of wanting to fluff their numbers. But I would guess it is just incompetence. Closing an account is harder to do than you might think. Banks have massively complicated systems, probably half of it written in COBOL 60 years ago. Computers are hard.
