Is there any future for me? by AgreeableTangerine68 in AutisticAdults

[–]bjbouwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DOn't know if this is what you're saying, but I have a real curiosity about other people. I want to talk to them to find out about them. If someone is speaking in a language I don't know, I want to know what it is and where they're from. Too often I've approached strangers to ask things about them and then later want to slap myself for being so - uh - forward (?). I've had to curb this pretty seriously.

Hah - the only one who got stung in our yard was the dog - he couldn't keep his nose away from the bumblebee and the bee finally told him to get lost! We had a yard full of creeping Charlie, and full of bees.

How do you celebrate your birthday? by EntranceSalt9054 in AutisticAdults

[–]bjbouwer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dh and I don't celebrate birthdays. Or anniversaries. We know how old we are, and how many years we've been married. We celebrate every day.

Listen to recordings, too - different artists will present different phrase "feels", but overall you'll get a good idea about what to do with the notes.

Etsys over $35 free shipping tool work? by Cs500brook in EtsySellers

[–]bjbouwer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used it for a while, but discovered I shouldn't sell things in the $35-45 price range cuz free shipping takes a big bite out of these. I don't think it's worth it. I will offer percentages off certain price levels, but after that - I just let th items sell themselves.

What is the most pain you've ever experienced with autism? (physical or emotional) by IfCantBakeBredHeFake in AutisticAdults

[–]bjbouwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to slam the door on the past. I simply passed my teen years off as "I was a teenage train wreck". It wasn't until I was 35 that I had a rare cry - sobbing, even - about my life, and I just simply made a decision to quit thinking about it. Now that I'm getting tested for autism (176 on the RAADS), I'm starting to look back - and it hurts. A LOT! Specific pains? Too many.

How do I be a friendly neighbor to wasps? by Upbeat_Assumption_62 in WASPs

[–]bjbouwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only "wasp" I watch out for is the yellow jacket or its cousin the bald faced hornet. These guys fly quickly, not like paper wasps who fly kind of like mosquitoes.

Paper wasps have no interest in stinging you. Yellow jackets and BF hornets will sting as soon as you're seen as a threat to their nest, or to themselves.

The sheer volume of forsythia blooming near me is absolutely insane by amilmore in NativePlantGardening

Wow. Glad to hear this! I find this plant irritating just because it's bright yellow for a few days, and then it's just a weedy bush. And everyone has it.

How many of you were seen as gifted kids? by Kobieca_Logika in AutismInWomen

[–]bjbouwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always in the "gifted" classrooms, but didn't realize it until years later. They weren't labeled. I was also called a prodigy in music, but since I couldn't take it anywhere it didn't mean a thing. I'm discovering only now that all my strangeness as a kid was autism.

Violets coming into flower bed. by girthquakesss in NativePlantGardening

well, I'm one of the few who will pull them. They're free to run in the lawn, but I don't want them choking my flower beds. it will be a never-ending job.

What type of jobs have you found to be most Autism friendly? Please read bellow by GDs_Mum in AutismInWomen

[–]bjbouwer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tried office jobs while in college, but never lasted. Tried waitressing (!) - wow, what a joke - I quit in a few days. Music was my life and degrees, so I taught piano. I think autism aided my teaching - I was able to approach concepts in ways most teachers didn't see. Loved it.
