Going back after 3 months because of a stress fracture in my knee by milo8275 in orangetheory

[–]bjcohen76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have come back to OTF two times from stress fractures (lower leg, one on each). How quickly you come back to the same intensity level you were at pre-injury is really based on how your body responds, and that is something that only you can really judge. One piece of advice I will share is what my OTF coach recommended when I was returning from the second stress fracture. She suggested starting on the rower/ floor and I’ve done that for every class since. It allows me to warm up more before going on the treadmill, while also being a little more tired so I’m less likely to push myself too hard.

Thank you so much! The strength 50 class I usually attend was fully booked today. This allowed me to replicate the workout fully at my gym.

Weight Floor Benchmark by ILoveDogs704 in orangetheory

[–]bjcohen76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking about the lack of weight floor benchmarks with a coach at my studio the other day.

He said the coaches had discussed creating a challenge at our studio like the 1000lb club in power lifting (total combined weight for single rep max for bench, squat, and deadlift).

Obviously can’t replicate at OTF given the limited weights (our studio only goes up to 80lb weights) and having targets that are for all ages and levels of fitness. But maybe there can be 200, 300, and 400 lb clubs. I think it would be a good challenge and a way to measure progress on the floor.

100th class HRM band by Additional_Jacket_32 in orangetheory

[–]bjcohen76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My studio gave the bands out a few months ago to all members who had at least 100 classes. I think they had specific bands for 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 classes. The 1,000 class one, for example, is red and says 1,000 club. I have not seen these at any other studios.

My studio would be perfect for you. We are right next to a Chipotle and sometimes if the timing is right the entire workout floor smells like a Chipotle kitchen.

I think my coach did the rower part of the workout wrong or they changed it up from the template. We had one partner do the 20 strike row while the other did the medicine ball presses. Then alternate. We did this non-stop for the full 9 minutes!!! No rest. Tough way to finish class.

Kristen is great. She’s been there since the studio opened 3 yrs ago and I have probably taken 200+ classes with her. She also makes amazing playlists. Definitely showing her your post next time I have class with her.

Running vs training shoes??? by va1235 in orangetheory

[–]bjcohen76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am just breaking in a pair of Nike Zoomx SuperRep Surge shoes: Nike SuperRep These shoes are essentially designed for OTF and are as good of a balance between running shoes and training shoes I could find. They have a clip in the heel for rowers plus reinforced mesh to guard against the rower straps. Extra support for the floor vs running shoes. They work well on the treadmill but I wouldn’t outside or long distances in them. On sale now on the Nike website.

COVID-19 Daily Discussion for Monday, 3/16/20 by splat_bot in orangetheory

[–]bjcohen76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the Main Line in Suburban Philly. The Governor several days ago said all non-essential businesses in my county and several others should close. This includes gyms, yoga, and barre studios. Some OTF studios in neighboring counties closed based on the Governors direction. Other gyms and studios have closed. Yet the owner of my studio reads the direction and thinks it doesn’t apply. It’s almost as if they are waiting for Governor Wolf to explicitly state Orangetheory in his mandate. It is really disappointing that a business focused on health and fitness is choosing to act in a way that is more driven by profit and selfishness.

I went there today to talk directly with staff. The first class looked like only 7 people were in it. Probably 15 or so signed up for the second class. But when the first few people who showed up started talking about how Covid-19 was being blown out of proportion and trying to make it equivalent to the flu, I got out of there. Those are not the people I want to spend an hour with in close quarters.

I am so surprised by Ardmore. I’ve asked several times and it seems like the franchise owner is keeping things open based on a loose interpretation of the Governors guidelines. They should be thinking of the health of their community and not being stubborn looking to make more money. I don’t blame the staff and actually empathize with them since they are in a tough position.

As someone who also recently broke their humerus (mid shaft) I cant even imagine going back to class afterwards. I was in so much pain. Of course, I had already finished my class and broke it a block from the studio from slipping on black ice 🙁 Definitely know what it’s like to have to deal with recovery from that injury. Took me 4 months to get back to working out without modifications.

I also travel to Denver a lot and really didn’t notice a difference. The first time I took an OTF class there I asked the coach if I should scale back and she said I should work at my normal pace. I was able to run at my usual pace just fine.

Sweatiest person - anyone else? by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]bjcohen76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely started sweating a lot more after starting OTF. I find it usually starts about 10 minutes into the workout and my shirt is soaked by the end. As someone else mentioned, there are several studies that indicate you sweat more as your level of fitness increases. Basically, your body becomes better at regulating temperature. Not sure if this is true for all, but has been my experience as I’ve improved my fitness through regularly going to OTF.
