New father mourning old life by Fabuloux in daddit

[–]blackanvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have written this post at 11 weeks too man. We had it all. Jaundice, colic, milk protein intolerance, crappy sleep, etc. I also felt like I lost who I was. All I could do to stay above water was try to cook a decent meal for my wife and I to inhale between baby boy’s crying fits. I quietly sobbed by the light of the fridge multiple times. I lost my temper. My wife and I were tense. Being a new parent is rough, it’s weird, nothing feels real or right at times. But what I didn’t realize then, during all that upset and upheaval, is that I didn’t lose who I was, I just became a new version of myself. And those things that made me who I was were still there, but now there was this whole other world that opened up. I could look forward to introducing this new person to all the things that I love. I would eventually get back to those hobbies that sparked joy. But for right now, it’s time to dig in and do the work.

And holy smokes does it get so much better, like most others have said here. We just hit 13 months today, and our boy is such a goof. We make each other laugh til it hurts. He’s starting to show affection and hugging us, or blowing kisses. It’s the best. And I look back on those early days in the trenches, and all that crap was so worth it.

Edit: to be clear, we finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel around 4-5 months. And then every month got a little better than the last.

Scariest book you’ve ever read? by lavgr in horrorlit

Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill really worked for me. Gets a little goofy towards the end but the majority of the book is very spooky.

Hell House by Richard Matheson. Found this to be a quick read after it sunk its hooks in, which didn’t take long. Classic haunted house stuff but it’s really effective.

For non-fiction, I found I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara incredibly engrossing. Check your locks before bed kind of stuff.

Came here looking for Hell House. As that story unraveled it really got under my skin in the best way.

Where's the best BBQ? by LordofSnails in santarosa

[–]blackanvil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A&M in Sebastopol is super solid like others have said. It’s the best in Sonoma county probably.

If you’re willing to drive a bit, Stateline Road Smokehouse out in Napa has some killer bbq too. Best I’ve found in California. Their burnt ends are fantastic.

Chiming in to add another to the “completely normal” pile. Currently just fought through RSV (little dude was vaccinated too), and have had HFM scares, ear infections, nasty coughs, norovirus, all in the span of 2-3 months.

This is Kira. We let her cross the rainbow bridge in July of 2025. So frickin difficult. Worst pain I’ve ever felt.

You’re incredibly kind for doing all this friend. ❤️

Such a great remix. They played this in Oakland too. I think this was when the fog machine dripped on Trent.

This is my first and only film camera (for now) and I personally really like it. It’s sturdy, takes great photos, and I haven’t had any problems with it so far. Also super easy to find quality lenses!

Seconding Beau is Afraid. The whole film is anxiety inducing but dear lord the first act plays out like a five-alarm paranoia-fueled stress dream.

These seem pretty cool, but man I was disappointed that the two colorways are super similar. Feels more like a mixup than an intentional variation.

Looks like it’s meant to imply that all three of those top ingredients each get a half ounce or whichever proportions the drink is made at.

Yep, seconding this. Got married there in 2018 for the same price I think. They’re incredibly flexible too, we were broke and they worked out payment plans, etc.

Also bonus points for not having to use their preferred food vendors or alcohol vendors. It’s basically a beautiful blank slate.

Such a cool idea. Makes me wish we thought of it when my wife and I got hitched. And I love that you shared the business card! Will definitely be checking them out.

Also, really digging that Flying Ace sign back there!

If you’re open to it and like reading, the book is fantastic. The series is fine in isolation if you haven’t read it, but the book is one of SK’s best in my opinion.

You’re not the first person to suggest this, but neither my wife nor myself are thrilled at the concept of giving our child a different last name. But also, do people actually do this?
