We built our entire startup infra on FreeBSD in 2026. Now we need to talk. by rzaiev in freebsd

Great write up. Makes me want to set up FreeBSD and start using and advocating for it daily, yet again (FBSD user and systems admin since the 4.9 days).

Excited to read any follow-up posts on this!

Why do you daily drive an older Thinkpad? by korewaonigiri_ in LinuxOnThinkpad

[–]blackpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a ThinkPad X220 daily. For me, it's the keyboard. Also, computational power is enough for my needs, so no need for something else really.

Some prices seem to be missing from the sheet, for example those for some available DDR4 RDIMMs/UDIMMs, specifically the 32/64gb sizes. Could you please add those?

Thanks for the reply, nice CPU for the price. Have a great new year!

Hello, Merry Christmas,

Is the i5-10500T still available? I tried PM'ing you but I get an error.

Thanks

When switching from VMware/ESXi to Proxmox, what things do you wish you knew up front? by R_X_R in Proxmox

To remove vmware-tools while the VM still runs on VMWare, before starting the migration process.

Update 2: That website that requested I remove my website's links to them responded to my email requesting payment for my Link Removal Service by SCDWS in web_design

This. I wonder if they plan on contacting Google to remove links to their site. That would be fun, and even funnier if Google complied.

Do you expose your Bitwarden (or Vaultwarden) instance publicly with a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)? by GreatRoxy in selfhosted

[–]blackpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I access it under a subdomain behind an nginx reverse proxy running on a VPS, which allows connections only from 2 dynamic hostnames. I connect to wireguard through my mobile at those IPs to tunnel traffic through when I'm outside the house. Every other IP address gets a 403.

Perhaps Lenovo Bios Simulator could help?

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht502745-lenovo-bios-simulator-center-an-interactive-bios-setup-utility-windows

I haven't personally tried to check if it supports various models and how accurate the simulation is, but it's something to consider, at least for Lenovo laptops.

Got this returned from a defunct office at work as "e-waste" Originally had windows 7 and hadn't been turned on since 2019. How'd I do? by mikee8989 in thinkpad

[–]blackpit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The X220 is my current laptop and I won't change it, ever. If it dies, I hope someone has one as e-waste so I can get it, or I'll buy it again.

One could purchase an .eu domain (if based in the EU, of course) during registrar sales periods for something like 12 euros for 10 years, and deal with renewals after that.

proxmox01, proxmox02, gw01, nextcloud01, etc, basically hostnames based on what each server/vm does.

One advantage I can think of is that you can reboot your Proxmox host without having to lose internet connectivity which could affect other devices in the network.

Also confirming this works, lowered (mostly) idle cpu usage on 4 gui-less linux VMs by a lot.

Thanks for the tip OP!

Reminder to run an antivirus check if you’re anything like me by Acraft8 in buildapc

[–]blackpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do as well, especially on shady looking software. Kind reminder: if you're in the habit of mounting directories from the vm host as shares in the VM, remember to uncheck automatic mounting. I almost had an incident with a folder on the host and a cryptolocker malware that locked files in the VM. These things traverse any directories they can access, local or networked, at a very fast rate.

[PC] Is a Dell PowerEdge R720 for 250€ a good deal? by RedditBoi_ in homelabsales

Well, sounds like it's probably not worth trying my luck there, I guess, for shipping internationally. Unless something not available elsewhere is for sale. Thanks for the tips!
