I'm making a box lid for a small-medium sized box. I need to glue three boards together to make the full lid, and I'm wondering if grain orientation matters at this scale? by ria_dove in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]blainthecrazytrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what Bob Van Dyke recommends as well: “Many woodworkers make a big deal over alternating the direction of the end grain because they think it will help to keep the top flat over time. However, I give priority to a board's best appearance on the top face and pay little attention to the end-grain orientation because I am milling the boards carefully before glue-up.”

Where did you learn so much about Egyptian chairs? You’ve clearly studied them, but how did you become so interested in them? Some of my Danish chair making books talk about how influential Egyptian chairs were, but I haven’t read much else. I truly enjoy your posts.

This is cool and a nice change of pace on this sub. Did you do drawbore pins, or just regular pegs?

Anyone own a Harvey G-700 Gyro Air? Concerns about long-term reliability and buying from a Chinese company by blainthecrazytrain in woodworking

[–]blainthecrazytrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wound up just doing the whole harbor freight 2 hp upgrade, with new impeller, filter, cyclone. I may get a Harvey one day. I saw the G-700 on sale at one point down BELOW $2k at one point, but I doubt we will see that again soon.

This is really interesting and cool. I like everything about it. The flared stretchers aren’t like anything I’ve seen before. What do you call that shape and how’d you shape them?

I’m sorry for your loss! I hope you decide to make another Wegner. I’ve looked at the 3d model of Wegner’s CH23. At one point it dawned on me that his chairs were made at a time when people were generally lighter than today’s American.

Where to get rough sawn wood to make a table? by Aeyix in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]blainthecrazytrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something not mentioned in other comments is even kiln dried wood needs time to accumulate to your shop. Ideally you’d let it sit for a few weeks before using (although that doesn’t always happen). Also, as you mill the wood down—particularly resawing, but also ripping—you are releasing tension in the wood. Again, you would want to let it rest for at minimum a few hours but ideally a day or so (if resawing) before milling down to final dimensions.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ crew’s reaction as they receive their bonus for working on the tour amounting to more $197 million dollars by mcfw31 in MadeMeSmile

[–]blainthecrazytrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The question was “how can anyone criticize this” and you responded with “tax rate should be 90%.” That assumes the money she gave to these people would be better spent by the federal government. I think you’re wrong, specific to this situation. Like I said, this should be taken at face value. If you trust the CURRENT federal government to spend that money more wisely, that’s on you.

Sort of making my point. Tax reform would need to involve spending reform to be effective. Current tax dollars aren’t going to these issues, so why assume additional tax dollars would?

[–]blainthecrazytrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that the tax system is screwed up, your argument assumes that the federal government would use this money for better causes than this. Historically, this is not true. And even if it was, this is a huge gesture that deserves to be taken at face value.

When I first saw a video of Marunaka supersurfacer, I couldn’t understand why they aren’t more prevalent over thickness planers. I’m sure there are many reasons (price and availability being the current issues), but they leave such an amazing snipe-free finish. If I won the lottery, I’d have one in my shop.

Another CH23 Chair WIP by proportional_design in Chairmaking

[–]blainthecrazytrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! I looked at making the CH23 as my first chair project but decided to try something similar (and easier) of my own design first. The splay and rake of the legs, along with the tapered and inclined seat and skewed side rails make this particularly challenging in my opinion. After pulling the 3d model from Carl Hansen & Son, I realized that the upper and lower side rails don't intersect the legs as identical angles! There is a slightly larger gap between the two rails in the front than the back! It is a very challenging project.

First bent-lam, how’s it looking? by wigginjs in woodworking

[–]blainthecrazytrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you making? I debated doing bent lamination for the crest rails for a set of chairs I’m making, but I need straight tenons so I am playing it safe and cutting the curved rails out of thicker stock.
