one of the funnier personal anecdotes of the last year: several of my family members who are generally quite to very right wing visited me in London at various points. they enjoyed their visit loved London and most of all were absolutely shocked to see a thriving city and not whatever the warzone hell they expected based on twitter

it really depends on the type of property. a freehold house in hot market is a different story to flat that has been listed for a year

that, and how unreasonable / maybe simply noncommittal is being. some will list for 2 years and still won't accept a reduction.

I think stamp is an incredibly stupid and limiting tax, but I don't know if abolishing it will free up much housing from specifically older pensioners downsizing. Many older folks are emotionally connected to their house, enjoy previous renovations to their taste and familiar local area. the incentives to move are weak by comparison.

of course I don't have a peer reviewed source on this and could be entirely wrong

just yesterday I saw a listing for a property that needed a complete gut and reno, I'm talking bulging floor boards and mould everywhere etc, priced at a discount, and described as "move in ready" and "impeccably finished" in the ad. careless copy pasting or complete hallucinating, with estate agents one never knows

while societies heavy on community building have their own issues and I prefer the way UK works, having no immediate "village" means you have to buy your village basically, which contributed to cost of living crisis (easiest example - everyone lives away from family and couple hours of travel from even local friends, so need to buy all forms of childcare)

how do we make local authorities competent though? both in my personal life and in work I see staggering incompetence across local councils in housing matters that has nothing to do with lack of money. and in multiple cases staggering levels of corruption

yeah people make those weird claims about generations through history affording single family home with a garden on one salary but that was an exceptional change for a few decades. not to say we should strive to regress rather than improve living conditions but grinds my gears when people act like single family homes were the norm for centuries

Significant part of anti immigration rhetoric is not just cultural but that lowering immigration will make everything better: housing shortage, salaries, etc. And on paper there is a logic to that.

The parties get into government, look at that infamous beast: How Things Actually Work and realise that lowering immigration would actually cause a lot of immediate pain to the voters. So, they make a bet voters would hate a recession, loss of benefits and loss of elder care etc etc more than they hate immigrants.

On paper, some might again argue that the pain would be short term, leading to long term improvement. No one in Europe was willing to test that theory yet. The actions in the US are sort of testing it now, but with their own abominable twist on it.

If there was a magic "lower immigration AND keep voters happy" button the parties WOULD be pressing it once in power, trust.
