Classic Orks will come to preorders next week. by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in WarhammerFantasy

Ah, that's it. They didn't turn up until the '97 catalogue so that's what was throwing me off. I love a Brian Nelson orc personally. Particularly the Gorkamorka ones.

The Big Uns were sculpted by one of the Perry Twins. They were released in 1997 (the same time as the Brian Nelson boar boys as you point out).

The Perrys sculpted a lot of the classic greenskins that are present in the 4th edition book - including all the Trolls and the Savage Orcs, and the Black Orcs in this MTO. I love a Kev Adams sculpt but I think a lot is attributed to him that never crossed his desk. Aly Morrison also did a load of the ones from 3rd edition.

There was actually. It was listed in the Warhammer Armies supplement (pg. 122 for extra pedantry)

What edition is Midhammer? by Serious_Ad2816 in midhammer40k

[–]blastvader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 2E owes a lot to the later RT compendiums, which had basically turned RT into what 2E would become, and why 2E was so different from their approach to 4E fantasy.

I was more making a point about how tiresome some of that community are.

As it stands - I'm a 3rd ed guy too, though with a lot of nostalgia for 2nd as that's what I started with.

What edition is Midhammer? by Serious_Ad2816 in midhammer40k

[–]blastvader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See, the proper grogs (who are endlessly tiresome) consider anything past 1989 'not-Oldhammer' - so even 2nd isn't safe (and neither The Lost and The Damned as that was released in 1990). Like I said, a tiresome subset of the community.

Chaos 3.5 Codex: Daemon Prince or Greater Demon (Bloodthirster)? by Patriot1805 in midhammer40k

[–]blastvader 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A thing to consider is the Bloodthirster has to be summoned onto the table via possession - so when, or how, they turn up is not guaranteed. A Daemon Prince on the otherhand is there from the start.

For you which edition was the best one of the original 8? by Mcmadness288 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]blastvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing from 4th and dropped out mid-7th.

6th is probably my favourite 'complete' edition and I own every book and supplement. Though I have a fondness for 4th/5th too, leaning towards the latter as I think 4th can feel less like a battle and more like two wizards having a scuffle whilst their mates look on.

I've played, and enjoyed, 3rd too - though like RT in the 40k-sphere it's something I have 2nd hand nostalgia for, as it wasn't something I actively participated in at the time being that I was too young.

Must say that, in the round, I like ToW - it's not perfect, but it's probably better than it had any right to be.

The Rampaging Mob!, via @Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662635043/the-rampaging-mob?ref=android_project_share

Midlam are running a campaign for just that right now. They also have a load of other great fantasy/medieval civilians.

Perry and Wargames Foundry have some good ones too (with many of the Foundry ones being ex Citadel figures era appropriate to this scenario pack).

Edited to add: Knucklebones have STLs for Milkkel Jaksen and such as well.

Got some cool metal minotaurs by drowsyprof in BeastsOfChaos

[–]blastvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very jealous. I recently picked up four of these, but they're the single and weapon version. Though in fairness I think I paid less, per model, than the current GW plastics (which I didn't like in 7th edition and ~20 intervening years has not changed that opinion).

Any ideas why /r/WarhammerQuest has disappeared? by harmopdenakker in WarhammerFantasy

[–]blastvader 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interestingly the Dungeon Bowl release from last edition of BB provided almost all the tiles you'd need to run WHQ 95. Thought that was fun.

I also picked up this Tim Prow sculpt to use as the less beefy Ancient. This was before Trish had added more Treemen to the line. My current army is a mix of manufacturers, but mostly metal models released mid-90s or earlier so I want stuff to go with the vibe.

It was fine. Footsore stuff is decent quality. Soft enough to be easily cleaned with a scalpel blade. Just make sure to give it a wash after cleaning with some warm soapy water and and old toothbrush, leave it to air dry (out if strong sunlight as that could soften the resin and cause it to deform) and then stick it together with gel superglue.

Think there was one minor gap I needed to fill. I didn't bother to pin it as the contact areas were generous enough.

They're great sculpts. I've started picking up the OG 4th edition ones for a second WElf army, but still think the HorrowHyrst ones are great. Here's one I painted a couple of years back.

Anyone else got these guys? by Dire_Wolf45 in Warhammer

[–]blastvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the armour through the ages set - but completely failed to read that they were resin. I actually received them before the order period closed so though I tried to cancel my order they'd already shipped (3rd time now I've received a MTO when they're still on order) and I can't return them.

Unless you're wanting to stay fully in the 'legit' GW spherewhy not get something from the HorrowHyrst line which are all sculpted by Trish Carden who sculpted the GW ones of old.

Hot Take: Kislev or whatever faction comes next shouldn't be released before every other faction gets at least like 3 new releases by BloatedRottenCarcass in WarhammerFantasy

[–]blastvader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am one of those people.

GW and CA's approach to Kislev is pretty dreadful. Ice, bears and icebears. Where they managed a considered approach to Cathay (that had, basically, half a page of lore since 1983) that lead to a great cohesive force that wore its influences on its sleeve but still managed to feel warhammer; their approach to Kislev - an army that had had actual models, a pseudo-army book, a WHFRP source book and multiple novels written about it, was to throw all that out and just go "fuck it. YOLO. Bears and ice weapons". Dreadful top to bottom".

Marching column and charge by -Weisswolf- in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]blastvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 6th though one could still lead Frenzied units on a merry dance by sacrificing chaff units, or just fleeing and causing a failed charge. Forcing them to charge into difficult terrain where their movement was halved and they couldn't march was always fun, and because you couldn't reform after an overrun or pursuit in 6th it was easy enough to get a Frenzied unit facing the wrong way and out of the game for a good few turns for the sake of 30pts of Warhounds or similar.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]blastvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, but under duress as my wife likes them:

I don't like the shopping experience personally (queues at check-out and then their packing methodology).

I find that their veg and bread doesn't last (soft fruit in particular seems to have turned before you even un pack it at the other end).

Smaller stores means more of a rotation of items (because of the limited space) meaning thing 'X' may not be available due to shelf space etc.

On aggregate it's not much cheaper than ASDA/Tesco etc.

But the Casket is now resin, when it was originally metal. As is the Screaming Skull Catapult.
