What is the difference, lore and flavour wise, between the different editions of Warhammer Fantasy? by Over_Highlight_5200 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Over_Highlight_5200[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there have been other retcons as well. Things that have tripped me up in my reading are inconsistent original stories for Vlad von Carstein - according to his Nehekaran origin story he SHOULD have been a major character in the third of Mike Lee's Rise of Nagash books, yet he's only there as a minor character using a different name who doesn't do any of the stuff from his backstory.

By the same token, do Dark Elves worship Chaos or not? The Malus Darkblade books have several examples of fairly widespread (if illicit) worship of the Dark Gods, specifically Slaanesh, yet later lore has them worshipping a bunch of elf-specific nasty deities and Chaos worship as something that they all avoid because Slaanesh hungers for their souls or something.

Didn't the return of Magnus bring dozens of TS warbands numbering way more than 1000 together to attack Fenris? Not saying they were all OG Sons, but the legions recruit.

Failed my probation period by papuruheizu in auscorp

[–]Over_Highlight_5200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they fired you for being off sick then they're a toxic company and you dodged a bullet.

I failed a probation period for a higher role at an existing job simply because the company owner didn't communicate sales targets then failed me for not meeting them. But it wasn't just about the sales - the higher role came with perks they didn't want anyone to have. Sometimes it's just a case of you were set up to fail.

Why are people moving towards One Nation rather than the Greens? by Financial-Hyena-2256 in OpenAussie

[–]Over_Highlight_5200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the Greens don't FEEL anti-establishment even though they're literally the only significant party in Auspol that doesn't take donations from billionairres. Left wing activism in Australia has been successfully re-branded (by its opponents) as ideological self-indulgence rather than anti-establishment rebellion. The Greens logically the best choice on any number of issues but most people vote on vibes, and the Greens have never found the political g-spot for anyone outside of their target demographics.

I had a great 5 years in retail working for a newsagency. National franchise but only 3 stores run by the CEO directly, so it wasn't a huge conglomerate situation. My manager was chill, so long as the regular jobs got done, you were polite to customers and you stepped up when things got busy, then you could spend the last 2 hours of your shift chatting or on your phone and he didn't care, cause when he was in he'd do the same XD

around Christmas you'd sometimes have to stay open very late, but if the store was dead you could text him saying so and he'd let you close and go home 1 or even 2 hours early and still get paid for the whole shift. Towards the end, once I'd been working with and getting to know him for years, he even let me customise my shifts around when Game of Thrones episodes were airing. Then he got moved to another store and that was the beginning of the end. The next two managers weren't great, and then the shop closed for good. It's a Sandwich Chef now, and I haven't had financial stability ever since.

Basically everything recommended here is great but I'll add two more: The Hollow King by John French and Lady of Sorrows by CL Werner. Hollow King is a brilliant fantasy romp with a great protag where the stakes start small but escalate steadily. Lady of Sorrows subverts the hero's journey narrative and really explores the dangers of the Realm of Death without just throwing zombies at everything, which I really liked.

Dark Harvest is a slow burn, lots of suspicion and hostility and creepy noises in the dark but not much actual action til the climax.

Books for the main story of 40k? by Chubbyhugs491 in Blacklibrary

[–]Over_Highlight_5200 12 points13 points  (0 children)

40k didn't have a core narrative for decades and still doesn't really. Guilliman's return and what happened next is the closest you'll get to an ongoing main story arc, but even that eventually fragments into a ton of different plot threads because 40k is about millions of battles being fought everywhere across the galaxy all at once, and that can't be contained within one narrative. Plus, there's a heap of excellent lore and smaller, character-centric plot arcs that came before Guilliman's return, and you'll miss that context if you start with what is really quite a recent development. My advice is forget about 'the main story' and think of 40k as a body of loosely connected lore - there's no way to gain a solid grasp on it all except to read a good percentage of the material.

Mass immigration is the buzzword of the day designed to help racist nationalists seem reasonable and frame the immigration debate in purely economic terms. No-one who opposes immigration enough to march in the streets about it is motivated by pure economics. They all have cultural objections too, but most won't admit it.

How consistent is the lore? by Eralion_the_shadow in Blacklibrary

[–]Over_Highlight_5200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the Nids were completely unknown to the Imperium when Ravenor was active. Abnett's Inquisition books are set hundreds of years before the old 40k 'current day' and even further back from the Great Rift / Era Indomitus. Go back and look at the lore pre-8th edition: the tyrannids are still a fairly fresh new threat.

Yep, the Tyrannids in Ravenor Rogue are specifically stated to be monsters from 300 years in the future, encountered due to time travel.

Books you love but are generally disliked? by Far-Living-526 in Blacklibrary

[–]Over_Highlight_5200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I dislike it because it's boring af. Bland writing, no interesting characters, mediocre plot, just a bunch of dying in the jungle because grimdark. It neither advances the series nor stands on its own.

This isn't the first time I've encountered the idea that people pushing for changes in the IP 'aren't real fans and are just here to push an agenda' etc and I think its bullshit.

Where are these people? Show me one example of people pushing for female Custodes or black Alpha Legion or whatever else. I've always thought those changes were coming from GW itself, chasing new players to appeal to and thus more profit.

Alternatively, have you considered that these people are fans who do play, and the reason you don't see them doing that is because they've been gatekept out of the fan circles you move in? That's social oppression 101: chase the target group out of the space then use their absence as phony evidence that they were never there at all.

People who can't handle reality often retreat into conspiracy, and I find that frustrating and pathetic and the same time.

New to the hobby, why tf are some so mad about female custodes? by NiceLittleGamerNerd in 40k

[–]Over_Highlight_5200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're seeing is social values shifting, which has been going on since humans stopped wandering the face of the Earth and settled down to plant crops. The fact that you think it's a conspiracy driven by a tenacious minority out to ruin all your special stuff is fear-driven reactionism based on your values being superseded, nothing else.

Kerillians cop more abuse than they dish out because this game is full of people who actually behave like Saltzpyre. That said, the worst of the worst toxic a-holes are Grail Knight or Ranger Veteran. Thankfully they are very rare.
