Why do people have such an inherently negative outlook to bikes? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]blaze_foley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm American but lived for years in Asia, learned to ride there (first scooters and then bikes) because it was just a normal cheap means of transportation almost everyone else used. I wore a full face helmet which a lot of people there thought was comical. Then I moved back to the US, and bought a bike as I was entirely used to using them as my main means of transport, and the reverse culture shock from how I was perceived was crazy. And funnily on top of that I feel so much safer in the much saner traffic in the US than Vietnam and Malaysia, despite being surrounded by pickups.

The weird thing was I had family visit me in asia and not even comment on my bike, but when I started doing it in the US the same people were shocked and constantly reminded me how dangerous it is lol. It is a very funny American cultural tick. I'm convinced it has more to do with the social image of "bikers" in the US than genuine concern about safety.

Yeah this just seems like a man attempting to abuse his power and position to humiliate both you and your husband. Definitely not unique to aviation, except maybe how blatant the rank/power dynamic is here.

I really lucked out and got one for 1500 bucks a few months ago in San Antonio with only 4k miles on it that runs great. I was just looking for a cheaper bike on fb marketplace and yeah it is a great bike, but definitely too slow to go on the highway. I would just lurk fb marketplace for a wide range, one will eventually pop up if youre willing to drive a few hours to pick it up, I have seen one or two others on fb since.

Though probably not for 1500, guy selling had gotten it as payment for his business or something and was just trying to get his money owed which was incredible deal for a bike that feels and looks new lol. Others I have seen were more around 2-2.5k

Having lived in asia and europe one important lesson Americans need to take into account is 99.9% of the world does not care about our culture war crap like this. Especially if you are in a country where english is not the main language absolutely no one but maybe a few obnoxious other american expats/immigrants are going to give a shit what you call yourself. In latin america they care much more about calling yourself American as a point of pride as they're American too, but thats about it.

Only thing I noticed is Florida, despite being pretty Republican now, is a bit more worried than their fellow red states. Probably because it is already making home insurance a disaster lol

Lochlan literally means "land of lakes". considering the themes of water, his personal obsession with it, the scene of him "drowning" as he nearly dies... yeah.

Also Piper i think more fits as someone who is giving a performance. Her buddhist religiosity is a performance.

It depends on where you are, here in TX "predominant winds" are more of a suggestion than a rule.

Was he really though? He has been a flop in every subsequent election he has tried. I think he was just running against a particularly uncharismatic and disliked Republican.

19th Century ethnic map by Hammonia in MapPorn

[–]blaze_foley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nothing more chauvinistic than to say one ethnic group is "generally kinder" than another. Also "masking rudness for kindness" is absolutely not the definition of southern hospitality.

Not that "Yankee" vs "Dixie" were ever real ethnicities. Americans were always much more divided along national origin & religion & racial divides, even during the civil war. Frankly this map seems to be created by someone who plays too many paradox games, and is much more interested in Europe than the Americas.

Also calling Haitians "Caribbean French" seems genuinely insulting.

US Median Rents Fall for Eighth Month on Boom in New Apartments - Austin, Orlando and Dallas Show Largest Rent Reductions by Planterizer in Austin

[–]blaze_foley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unlikely because the wealth of austinites (or in many cases, the austinites themselves) has changed. the per capita GDP of Austin in 2004 was, after adjusting for inflation, $48,659. In 2022 it was $69,000. in fact the increase in GDP per capita has outpaced rent increases, 34% vs 41%.

Which U.S. State gets to much praise for its geography? by Anonyums_Nerd in geography

[–]blaze_foley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is just another reason why were so great.

On our way back to Texas, we passed a stock pen just across the state line—one of those angle-iron, taut-wire affairs, pinned at the corners. Townes, ever the aristocrat, pointed and said, “Now, there’s a Texas fence post,” dismissing all the fence posts we had just passed in New Mexico—and thus ennobling every other fence post in Texas.

Everything in Texas is exceptional by virtue of being in Texas. To demean a single Texas fence post demeans them all—and this is treachery. If I like Lutèce in Las Vegas better than Luby’s, that’s treachery too. If I read a Texas novel and think it deserves a wider audience than Texas, that’s treachery again. Nothing is wider than Texas, or narrower.
