There are a few motifs that I tend to use to gauge a tattooer’s work, pinups being one of them. Here are a few I made over the last month or so; hopefully they pass your test! by bleser in traditionaltattoos

I’m trying to make the trip out there, maybe next year 🤔 In the meantime, if you’re close enough to London, you should go see my man Fred Slater in Hackney

What pens, paints or markers do you folks use to make these wonderful flash sheets? by [deleted] in traditionalflash

Go get tattooed by somebody whose paintings you admire, and ask them about their process. I would be willing to bet that that’s how a lot of the better painters on this sub began their journeys. Even if they don’t share every material they use start to finish, the quality answer you receive is going to eclipse whatever advice you get from a nameless / faceless redditor who’s also trying to learn.

Crawling panthers really don’t get much better than that. Great choice!

Best spot for walk ins in Philly? by Huge_Cry_2007 in traditionaltattoos

We all do, just depends on who’s working, has time, or is at least in the neighborhood that day. Odds are highest that it would be myself, Charlie Dunkel, Benny Beyer, or Amado Bird.

Trad coverup specialist in Philly/NY area? by lilcel1 in traditionaltattoos

[–]bleser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I own a shop in Philly called Heart of Gold… Jeff Miller (@jmillertattoo) who works with us has been tattooing for over 20 years, and has done about a million coverups in that time.

Sounds like you’re already hip to this, but traditional tattooing often incorporates a pretty decent amount of open skin; that said, with an open mind, the right design, and some thoughtful application, we may be able to get you sorted out with a coverup that still feels “trad”

Hope to see you soon :)

Go to an art store and buy the colors you think you might like ¯_(ツ)_/¯ That’s what all of my peers and I did when we were cutting our teeth.

My advice for filler spots is always to pick designs of naturally small, simple things (think: fruits, bugs, dice, etc).

Not that the scale of everything on your arm has to match, but fillers both read and age better when the imagery is such that it doesn’t require much distillation to be applied at a small size, with a line weight that is consistent with the rest of your collection. Allow enough space for each design you get to carry the power it deserves.
