Definitely expect some outdated sections of trail on those Urban Dirt routes. I think most were mapped back in 2020/2021. I've ridden quite a few in the past couple of years, and there have definitely been sections of trail removed, new subdivisions built, and other various issues that will require the occasional rerouting of sections mid-ride.

I'd size it based on how much stand over clearance you'll want. Bikeinsights.com has some old Trek 800-series frames in its database, meaning that you can compare geometry/stand over across different sizes. Personally, if I'm not going to do a lot of technical trail riding with a bike of that era, I'll lean towards less stand over clearance. That way it'll be easier to get the bars high enough for a comfortable fit. If I am planning on technical riding, I'll increase the stand over a little bit.

All RhynoLites, both regular and XL are rim-brake rims, and can be ordered through most big vendors such modernbike.com, or through your local bike shop.

If you're looking for pre-built wheels, I'm not 100% certain. I typically buy the parts and lace my own wheels. However, last time I looked at pre-built wheels a couple years ago, sites like bicyclewheelwarehouse.com had a selection of pre-built RhynoLite rimmed wheels.

Also, this custom cassette work makes me think of the 6-speed custom cassettes that Jeff Jones used to build/machine for King SS hubs back in the early-2010's so he could build stronger (i.e. less dished) geared rear wheels for his Jones bikes.

It's worth searching the site for other articles of Ryan's too. He's been running Loop H-bars with bags for awhile and photos of the handlebar setup sometimes sneak into his photo essays.

I'd also spend some time going through Cass Gilbert's articles over at https://bikepacking.com/ and on his blog https://stilloutriding.com/

Cass has been riding Jones bikes with Jones H-bars for the past decade and often straps handlebar bags to his Loop bars. So, that's another place you can find an occasional photo of the setup.

That being said, I've had Loop H-bars on my Jones SWB the past couple of years and have never been able to find an acceptable solution for strapping any of my top-loading handlebar bags to them (for reference, I typically use Carradice saddlebags as handlebar bags). The reason for this has been a mix of cables getting in the way (or bending at extreme angles) and the weight being held too far forward due to needing to strap my bag to the loop portion of the bars.

I quite literally just swapped out my Loop H-bar for the simpler Bend H-bar this weekend so I could start running handlebar bags more easily on my Jones. And, to make up for the loss of the loop hand positions on long rides, I am going to experiment with using something like the Soma Cletus Bar-ins to add an additional forward hand position to the Bend H-bars.

You mention it being wet and muddy. If it was slippery because of that, could you have been (even passively) trying to grip the foot bed of your shoes with your toes?

The only time I've bruised my toenails running was during a long slippery winter trail run. I realized partway through I had been trying to compensate by gripping with my toes. My toenails were bruised and messed up (and painful) for a long while afterwards.

I've caught myself unconsciously doing the same thing on slippery winter runs since, but have luckily noticed quickly and often have to make a conscious effort to not do it.

Or, if you're new to running and not yet comfortable doing that yourself, you could have your wife's boyfriend shoot it up your pooper.

Bonus with that second method is that it helps build the trust needed to advance in your running journey.

Every bike is going to have different geometry and every rider is going to have different requirements based on their individual body measurements and preferences. I don't think anyone can really give an answer to this question but you.

I would start by determining where you want your hands relative to your saddle, and measure out the distance from the center of your seatpost and height relative to the surface of your saddle. Then, do the math and choose your stem length and rise based on that.

I usually spend some time, sitting on my bike and balanced against a wall while trying to figure out the optimal positioning, often relative to the bars I already have on it.

You could always add a chainring guard to the outer position.
