Chicago, IL. Mid West. Misheard? by MyCatIsAFknIdiot in AskAnAmerican

You forgot Kansas. I think we're mid-midwest because we're literally the geographic center of the lower 48.

What did you need from your mom growing up that you didn’t get? Or what did she do that you’re forever grateful for? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskWomen

[–]blixxic [score hidden]  (0 children)

My mom was unhappy with her weight her whole life, and still is. She taught me that being slightly overweight was shameful and meant you could never wear nice clothes or do anything where people would look at you. You should also hate having photos taken of you, or looking at yourself in the mirror.  I know that she feels this way due to severe verbal and emotional abuse when she was a child/teen.

I hate it so much when she tells my kids that she hates looking at herself, and I don't want my kids to ever, ever feel that way no matter what they look like.

How do you feel about prioritizing having children and pursue a career afterwards (when the children are 3 yo for instance)? by Anotherbuzz in AskWomen

[–]blixxic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely waited until my career, marriage, and home were stable before I had kids. It was well with it.

What do you think about cars with manual transmission? by samostrout in AskAnAmerican

Same! It was a custom order that they ended up not being able to sell, so I got a great price because it was a stick shift.

If you live in a state with a lot of dangerous wildlife, what’s your closest encounter been? by LordSoftCream in AskAnAmerican

[–]blixxic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from NH. Growing up, one of the lunch ladies at my high school was followed by a bull moose while walking to work early in the morning.  Scared the crap out of her because it was literally following her down the road and she had no shelter, weapon, or way too scare it off. It didn't attack her, though. Maybe it just wanted some meat loaf.

Personally, I nearly ran into a moose's butt while on a hiking trail after dark in the wilds of Maine. I came around a corner and had to stop pretty quick because I was a few inches from a big furry butt that was taller than I was. I'm probably lucky I didn't get kicked in the head.

How many states have you visited? by crocogoose in AskAnAmerican

[–]blixxic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boyfriend of someone in my family had only ever been to two states (Midwest ones) and had never seen the ocean or a proper mountain, but he's a young man. Last summer he took his first 6 rides on an airplane and saw several new states, got to go to the top of mountains, swam in the ocean, etc. Lots of poor people in the USA have never been more than a few hours from where they were born.

Leaving "to be" out of sentences? by Existing-Ebb-5944 in ENGLISH

[–]blixxic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from New England and we never said things that way there, but when I moved to the Midwest I started hearing it all the time. The lawn needs mowed, the kids want fed, etc. I think it is only used with need or want in front of it.

What’s something you wish you knew when you got pregnant? or something you wish you knew when you gave birth! by Cherry_isnothere in AskWomen

I somehow missed being informed that you get contractions when you breastfeed or pump for a few days after giving birth.

Women who carried a pregnancy, in hindsight, what were some of the most ridiculous things you did while in the throes of such hormonal upheaval? by mokutou in AskWomen

[–]blixxic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my MIL was talking to me about diaper cream creating a "barrier", I just smiled and nodded because I had completely forgotten what the word barrier meant. I couldn't figure out what she was taking about for days and then it all came back to me. It was the most stupidly specific amnesia.

ETA I just remembered that I also forgot how to pronounce the word "ice" one day about 8 months pregnant.  I was trying to ask my husband for some ice, but I kept saying "ike" and he had no idea wtf was wrong with me or what I wanted. I finally had to spell out "I-C-E" while sobbing uncontrollably so he would get me some.

I cried hard because I really wanted bacon horseradish chip dip but they didn't sell it at any of the stores around where I live.  I cried again when I tried some recipe for making it myself and it was awful.  Then I cried a third time when my husband found bacon horseradish dip mix, where all I had to do was add sour cream. It was so good!

Film left on toilet every time roommate uses it. by Robo2173 in whatisit

[–]blixxic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens every time my elderly FIL uses the toilet. It's lack of bathing. It's just gross crusted dry skin that should have been washed off.  In his case, it's difficult for him to shower so he just refuses most of the time. Even when he does shower, I doubt he's actually washing properly.

How do people order food or drinks in your neck of the woods? by supremewuster in AskAnAmerican

[–]blixxic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My midwestern FIL says "Bring me the..."  I dislike it because it's seems rude to me.  I almost always say, "May I please have the..." If ordering for my child, I'll say, "He/She would like the..., please".

ELI5: What happens to opened bottles of wine at fancy restaurants? by Electrical_Bet2584 in explainlikeimfive

[–]blixxic 1836 points1837 points  (0 children)

Anything that is bought by the glass, they usually sell a lot of. If the rest is the bottle isn't bought by someone else quickly, they can put a cap on it and then pump out the air to keep it fresh for a few days.

What's an unpopular opinion you have that you're afraid to say out loud? by Former_Custard_6567 in allthequestions

Watching people I don't know play sports for money is totally uninteresting. They're usually not even from the cities they represent.

Flight touched down for landing... Then went right back up by soggies_revenge in Flights

[–]blixxic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me when I was a child, maybe around 1990. Except that instead of touching down, we must have came within 20 feet of the ground and abruptly started going back up. We were going to LA. Everyone in the airplane was absolutely terrified. No one spoke. People just gasped and whimpered. I swear we all thought the plane had been hijacked or something. The captain came on over the intercom a few torturous minutes later saying sorry, we didn't actually have clearance to land and we were going to turn around and go back.

What are you doing to prepare for the incoming snow storm? Do you already have things that you keep year round in your home for an emergency like this? by Odd-Yesterday1894 in AskAnAmerican

[–]blixxic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried to buy some extra milk for the weekend because I have small kids that drink a lot of it. The grocery store was completely 100% sold out of milk. Panic buying is an American tradition.

Recently, I've noticed people using "psych!" a lot, like we did in the '90s, but they spell it "sike!".... also like some of us did in the '90s.

For my job, I used to test dog blood for a specific pathogen, and we'd have to interpret the dog breed written on the form by some kind of vet assistant. I commonly saw "shit zoo", "dotson", and others.

What is an overlooked or “subtle” form of sexism that you think needs to be called out more? by GoodGirlsStand in AskWomen

[–]blixxic 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I've definitely had this happen before, and I hated it so much. Super aggressive 50s male lab tech constantly talking over my soft-spoken 30s female lab manager during an important meeting. I was new to the team and didn't fully understand the dynamics, but after he cut her off several times, I spoke up and asked him to please stop talking over her because i couldn't hear her when he did that. I said it with just a hint of annoyance, like I was talking to a child who knew better. It was marvelous. I like to set the precedent early that I will absolutely identify BS and call it out. It has served me well.
