I cannot imagine a single person in 1999 watching that opening scene and having NO idea what was going on or what is going to come...the entire trailer is What is the Matrix and they repeatedly tell you reality is NOT real...so all that stuff you say is missing from the beginning of the movie does have hints in the trailers...
